Joe-FM on channel 38.9

KCYB has been running their usual format when I've checked over the past few days.

Check next Saturday night, Frog. They were running on 38.9 and it was like a time warp back to the 80s club scene. Rage indicated this is normal programming for KCYB on Saturday nights, this is just the first time I've personally been subjected to it.

I liked it... :)

You're absolutely right. The two are very much different, and I've no idea why there is a discrepancy between what is shown in the licensed pattern map you have provided, and the fccdata map that Joe posted that more closely resembles the actual signal being cast across Houston. It is quite peculiar.

KZHO is licensed for this:

But holds a construction permit for this:

I think KCYB has done the dance music programming on Saturday nights for quite some time now. I recall hearing it last winter.

I just caught someone logging into whatever PC is providing the JOE video/audio stream, and changing several settings. It's obviously a Windows 7 PC and they used TeamViewer to log in. VLC is streaming the audio. I don't know what's handling the visual portion because the video bitrate on 38.9 is so low, everything is too blurry to make out any text.

Anyway, whoever logged on, accidentally typed a bunch of "yyyyyyyyy's" and then had to delete it. They also appeared to boost the audio volume a little bit. I got a few short videos of this with my phone.

EDIT: Actually, whoever made these edits should log back on. They deleted the "38.9 KZHO-LD HOUSTON" text that serves as legal ID for this subchannel. Unless the station puts their own legal ID over the video every hour, then I think that text was there for a reason.

Hey Joe, whatever you did caused me a problem. When I tune in to 38.9, the channel comes in for two seconds with both audio & video. Then, the audio shuts off and the box displays a small "No Signal" onscreen. Still see the video, no audio. Hit menu, exit, audio/video for two seconds, then the no signal pops up again. What gives, man? You tossing us that still own a tube set to the curb? Are you trying to force your way onto a flat screen, by forcing me to disconnect a cable box and hook up the outdoor?

Ah, but yes it is, Joe. When you started running those screen shots of Astroworld, the skyline, etc. I lost audio on the converter again. I could see the pictures shuffling, but no audio. Now that you are back to the screen you posted above, I've got both again. You're losing audio when you try to show anything more than the Joe FM- KZHO LD Houston ID on video. Not sure why, but that's what's happening here. I know I'm in the null, Joe, but that's nothing a good outdoor antenna can't solve and I'm pointed right at you. I'm currently showing 57% signal strength from KZHO, so that's not the problem. It's associated with the lack of video quality that's killing the audio on the cheap $50 Wally World converter boxes.

Right now, you are flat jamming the 80s. Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin, then right on to Kajagoogoo - Too Shy Shy...you see, now that's 80s! If only The Point would've gone down this road a time or two....

Nice jingles, btw.

In the digital television world, the video rules. If the available bandwidth is exceeded, the first thing to go is the audio.

That would explain it. All is right with the world of Joe FM at my house again. Good signal, even better tunage. Sure wish a radio signal could find its way up the Neyland tower now...then, we'd be all set in the 4-4.

I'm looking forward to what's in store for Joe FM. Here's hoping for a fantastic 2016 for Joe FM as well as Joe the man.

BTW, Joe, you accidentally got your stations mixed up. You're currently showing an ID of "TV 38.9 KAHO-LD Houston".

Joe I know this is very early and probably isn't possible right now, but when you are able to can you look into getting something here in SA also?

What is the licensing situation with the station? I don't know if you are familiar with the recent SoundExchange mess that forced 100's of internet radio stations offline due to the fees increasing sometimes 1000's of %.

I used to run an internet radio station similar to 106.9 "The Zone" that was forced offline on January 1st.

It looks like the video bitrate is up on 38.9. However, the audio is only 96 kbps AC-3, although it sounds pretty good.

Reception is good in 77042 as long as I have my rabbit ears stacked on enough boxes :D

It appears that some of the station's sub-channels are missing from this website information.
What is the current lineup for the sub-channels?

38.1 is Vision Celestial, Spanish language Christian programming.
38-2 is Centro Cristiano de Vida Eterna programming.
38.3 is Vision Celestial again. Same programming, alternate feed.
38.4 is a hodge podge of Spanish language Christian programming, under the name TV Elohim.
38.5 is currently a black screen. Most recently, it aired a network called "Uni2" or Unidos.
38.6 is from the church up in Dallas, on Westmoreland. Iglesia JesuCristo es Mi Refugio.
38.7 is color bars. Most recently Mána Música audio, with a still shot of their logo. Been color bars for several months now.
38.8 is Spanish language Christian as well, but it's a newer offering. Haven't caught the name of it yet. It lists a 770 area code to call for "all of Houston". That's not an area code of ours, and IIRC, it's over in Georgia.
38.9 rounds out the subs with Joe's slideshow and classic hits, Joe FM. He is providing the first English language programming on KZHO or any of its subchannels since Urban Television Network aired on 38.5, which moved to a subchannel of 43 in 2012.

Edit to add: why is .8 & .9 omitted from rabbitears? Trip's site is typically pretty accurate, however, both have been a part of KZHO's line-up for over a year now.

As I always say when people say things like this, if nobody sends me a note, how am I supposed to know from all the way over here in Virginia what the lineup is on an LPTV station in Houston? RabbitEars is only as good as the information provided to me by my sources, be they official websites or viewer reports.

In any case, I've updated accordingly.

I'd be fine with you adding my name to your list of sources and keeping you abreast of any future Houston-Galveston facility changes, Trip.

Edit to add: I'll be sending you a list of updates soon, Trip. I have found a couple of other listings in Houston that are outdated, just don't have the necessary time to produce a list at the moment.

I was asked to go check Mana Musica 38.7. Turned out the computer receiving the stream had frozen up. Rebooted the CPU and restarted the stream on the VLC player. You can hear it now. The image problem is another story. They use a DVD player that keeps shutting off. Gotta go buy a new one. Tomorrow everyone can look at the logo again. :)

Do you know how long that computer was frozen up, Joe? Since September. That was the last time audio came out of 38.7, until today. So, the Mána programming should've been there all this time, huh? Talk about neglect! Well, I guess thanks for the rebooting, Joe. Good thing you're around there. I see that 38.5 & 38.6 are back in action again, as well.
