Joe FM rocks the Frog

First they would never drop Froggy and change to anything else. That would be admitting defeat. I've been inside those walls, this was a MAJOR blow in State College. The other stations didn't do well, just adds to it.

There is no one in Altoona sitting and saying we're still #1, and we're still #1 in Atloona, so be it.

Joe rocked them! If WGMR were to go country on top of Joe, and I have the gimmick, the end of the Frog would be very near.

I would love to see Joe Fm grow stronger. The Frog thing is a well known brand name but is not invincible. G101 would be a better candidate to topple Froggy but it would take a qualified sales and airstaff to do it.

Gargoyles says, defending the notion that State College means something--anything--to Froggy "Earth to Previous Poster: SC is both larger and more affluent than Altoona. (sources, US Census Bureau, US Department of Commerce.) A 25 in a market of 109 thousand is nothing to sneeze at. And neither is a 10ish share in a market of 130-thousand."

Earth to Gargoyles. It isn't that simple. For most of the past century, Altoona (Blair County) was larger than State College (Centre County). It was an Arbitron-rated market several decades before SC. The presence of Channel 10 for the past 60 years allowed radio rates to float much higher than in SC. And last, but not least, Blair's retail business base is still about 30 percent higher than Centre. So... more business, higher rates, and longer history. As a result, WFGY's 15 years-worth of 20-to-25 shares in the Altoona market... and the higher rate threshhold... and the greater demand for the avails all adds up to them being able to fill their 98.1 avails with spots from Altoona customers (and regional/national clients) priced between $65 and $125. Nothing that happens in State College changes that. More to the point, with top rates in Centre County nowhere close to $65, there is no incentive to beat the streets in SC, much less care about ratings. Other than ego.

Oh, but it IS that simple. The history doesn't much matter (Pittsburgh and Detroit have been "markets" longer than anyone else, and neither is as important as it was 50 or 60 or 80 years ago.) The retail base, of course, DOES. And Altoona has just finished a nice new mall with a Boscov's and a Home Despot and a Kohl's and a B&N bookstore, among other things. But that said, there's plenty of growth in Centre Cty, too. And with the population and the university, with no decline in housing starts (to which Altoona can make no claim,) I have to think that failing to pay sufficient attention to State College and environs is at their peril.

Altoona stations are thinking "generic" which is the current trend in radio and TV. But this, too, is at their peril. Local and regional will win over generic, ultimately.

My guess is that State College Froggy numbers are important for "end of the day" value calculations. That is why Forever sacrificed the Hot demo to insure a local frequency, one that would offset JoeFM. Not a small sacrifice, considering revenue.
So any success JoeFM may have hurts. Add the other bonehead moves, Lite, firings, tweaks, etc. And you have a sorry situation. All of it predictable, and all of it self-inflicted. It couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch ;D

Would anyone with access to the info care to share the breakdown of the "true book" as opposed to the "averaged numbers" that we see online?

I really am curious how everyone fared especially reading here about what a killing Froggy supposedly took up against Joe.
If you have and are willing to share, please PM me.
Thanks
Steve

This is David and Goliath. With a particularly unsympathetic Goliath getting his comeuppance.
It is tough to have to beat up on a lowly Frog. Why do the powers to be allow it to be so delightful?
Because they are deaf to the voice of justice... and of fair play.
Rock on JoeFM!

The fall numbers are easy to "isolate" - 1 point +- is the diff between the two
13 + 7 = 20/2 = 10 = the 7 is a simple rounded guess what frog had in the fall
2 + 6 = 8/2 = 4 = the 6 is a simple rounded guess what JOE had in the fall
The true number/story better make it to the business section soon. It's not "worst to first" it's damn close.
