Joel Osteen to Buy KB?

'Buddy, I'm not here to knock you down in order to make myself look good. Let's just say I get my dose of religion on a day to day basis and 10 o'clock Sunday Mass at St. Tommy's, South Buffalo. If I want a dose of Catholic radio, I'll check in on WLOF and if I want to find out what the Evangelicals are up to, I'll check in on WDCX. More than anything, I'm a work in progress just trying to get it right one day at a time. No runs, no spills, some errors.

I see that WLOF just got the CP for the 90.7 Lancaster frequency too.

Regarding religious radio stations.... it's my guess that 99 out of 100 of them are concerned with one thing; money. Its an easy way to make big bucks. They have gobbled up too many stations/frequencies that otherwise could be used more constructively. I have always held criticism for a station which will air preachers who scare money out of elderly folks, promising or suggesting eternal bliss. My only hope is that someday soon, with the onslaught of more and more religious stations, the "religious pie" will be cut too thin so that each religious station cannot make enough to support itself. - And yes, what a shame if KB were to 'fall' and become religious/motivational etc.

This is just crazy! You mean to tell me there's not a broadcaster in Buffalo, or anywhere that could buy KB and do something with it?

Give it to me, I'll take the challenge. What an absolute sorry disgrace if KB is sold to Osteen or any other religious broadcaster.

I never understood how a radio station (esp. on the AM side) could make any money while getting under a .4 in the ratings.. Religious stations are usually in that range. What is the monthly electric bill for a typical AM station with say 5,000 watts??? Let alone a 50,000 flamethrower like KB...

Sadly, this is exactly the point. Entercom alledgedly is selling the station to an operator that won't compete with WGR or WBEN. Matters not. WDCX is the heritage religion station in the market. Yeah, "heritage religion." Who would have ever thought those two words would be used together.

KB it's said, runs about $8500/ month on the solid state. Have no idea what the WGR electric bill might be.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It's official. We now have more posts on this thread than 'KB has listeners. Thus, the reason that Entercom wants out.

At least they've figured out that they should stop shooting themselves in the foot. It's too bad that their only solution to utililizing that big signal in a productive (i.e. profit-making) way is to sell it. Apparently, taking it Disney or standards or even promoting and selling the current lib-talk format is beyond their capabilities.

Greg Ried apparently is good at cutting costs and reducing a once-great full service station like WBEN to a shell of its former self, but not so good at building a brand and using resources creatively. It's a shame that there isn't someone at Corporate Parkway who has an iota of vision, or the willingness to allow someone with vision to control an underperforming asset.

Give it to Buddy. At least he has passion.

Easy.... stations in the .4 or lower range don't depend upon nor care about ratings. They are usually religion or brokered-time stations; both of which most often just take the money by the half-hour or hour or even longer and smile all the way to the bank. In the case of religious stations, they would sell an hour of time to some distant phony preacher from a 3---- zip code area for lets say $100, and his preaching convinces weak people to send in an average of $200. during that hour. The station wins, the preacher wins, the audience loses. - In the case of brokered time for special interest or ethnic programming the $$-numbers are likely the same but its an honest way of programming stations (excepting phony talk-shows promoting weight-loss [etc] alleged-products). In the case of ethnic programming, the folks airing the Hungarian Hour do not concern themselves about ratings.... they're the only Hungarian show on their; all Hungarians in the market know its there, etc. Works well.

Robert, how is it that you selected "Hungarians?" Does one of your stations air programming for the Magyar nationals?

Huh? I'm no fan of BEN, but it's been #1 two out of the last 4 books and never lower than #2 for as long as I can remember. That's hardly a "shell of its former self." What exactly do you guys expect?

Joel Osteen and/or the Lakewood Church owned Channel 55 in Houston for a number of years (KTBU--licensed to Conroe, Texas) but sold it recently to the America One group. Of course the station showed Lakewood Church broadcasts, but it was not a religious station and showed old sitcoms as an independent station. The station also broadcast the Houston Rockets at one point. So he has experience in broadcasting and probably the money from the sale of the TV station to use for radio. The TV station did not do too well in Houston because it is licensed to Conroe about 40 miles north of the city and reception in the south parts of town is poor and some cable companies in the southern Houston area such as Galveston if I recall correct) did not carry channel 55. I would expect that radio stations wouldbe religious though. Lakewood Church is the largest church in the USA==--it holds services in the old Summit, the basketball arena where the Rockets played before the Toyota Center was built.

Poor excuse if the Cable comapnies did that. Conroe is part of the Houston metro area and to discount it because of it being in Conroe, thats just dumb. Here is KTBU's service contour:

Personally, I don't care for Olsteen (or his wife who got fined by the FAA for causing an incident on a flight...because she thought she was better than everyone else). ANY preacher that wears $1000 suits bothers me...thats NOT what Jesus called for....(in the Bible, it says beware of those in fine clothes etc who stands on the corner proclaiming they are a preacher for Christ; he and most TV types fit the mold.....the money they spend could be used to HELP people...not themsevles.......ok ok Im off the subject)

If he buys anything in DFW it will be 1190 not KVCE......He wants a BIG signal...1190 is 50KW day....nighttime, noone listens to AM anymore (well except to WLS when its does a rewind...which BTW anyone has a complete recording of that?? I found a few hours repeated on the stream....and the audio off the mics was terrible during afternoon drive!)
