John's son told me he has a boat business and he is heavily involved in construction these days. Not enough time for the radio stuff anymore.

John's a GREAT on air talent.....need to get him DSL, a portable mixer, and a perception 120 mike! so he can do it at home!

hope the "Boat Business" is doing really well, because anyone who walks away from a radio job "these days", that has one, better have something REAL GOOD waiting for them. by the way(who the hell is buying boats in this economy?)

sounds like there might be more to this story huh?

Seriously folks... no disrespect... why should he?.... it's really none of our business what the heck he is doing... or why he is doing it.

Shimes, you are right. His son told me he is fine. He has plenty to do. He is not sitting around.

you are right. but i guess most people doubt someone leaving a career in this day and age, for "The Boat Business"...

Imagine someone leaving a career that's as stable, highly compensated, and highly respected as radio.

It always amazes me what I stumble across on the internet.....

Dad's doing great, and is in a retirement mode. Why can't anyone just believe that? He has grandchildren a family who likes to see him! For the last thirty years the poor guy has been coming home and crashing after the morning shift! Its nice to see him awake! There are more important things in life ya know....

But just an interesting side note and my two cents. Please don't read between the lines. Just venting. The industry doesn't deserve or see the value of air talent like my dad these days. We don't appreciate local personalities enough to keep them around. Local station managers over the years have sold out like good businessmen should to the big boys, but the result is a radio landscape of meaningless and impersonal programming.

I think we will eventually realize what is missing and bring back the idea of local personalities rooted in the culture of where they broadcast. It makes me laugh to hear that big corporations are going under (regarding radio & media conglomerates). A trend that will hopefully catch on. They never understood the value of people or the communities they leeched from.

;D

As a casualty of the Citadel purge a year ago, we can only hope your words come to fruition. Either way, just like your dad, after thirty years, I'm considering the same. Life's too short. (Eat dessert first.) Best wishes to your dad and his family. Savor the day!
