John McCain introduces the Television Consumer Freedom Act SCH13204

Witnesses testified May 14, 2013 to the Senate Committee about a proposed measure to provide a la carte cable and satellite television options to consumers. Among the issues addressed were the potential impact on the cost of service, local television content, and advertising revenue.

John McCain proposes 'a la carte' cable bill, encourages death of sports blackout rule.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/9/4316688/john-mccain-introduces-a-la-carte-cable-legislation

“In the end, the Television Consumer Freedom Act is about giving the consumer more choices when watching television. It’s time for us to help shift the landscape to benefit television consumers," McCain said. McCain's proposed legislation is certain to face fierce resistance from the industry.

No kidding..... fierce resistance by the entrenched power of the industry is to be expected.

You cannot legitimitely increase the freedom of some (consumers) by limiting the liberty of others (producers). If those who own the rights to games don't want to allow the games to be shown in certain areas, that is their right. Just like the right of a consumer to black out a game, by not watching it.

Television Consumer Freedom is a real lie.

I understand your logic. On a level playing field what you say makes sense. However... some of the sports leagues have some exemptions granted from the anti-trust laws, do the not? Maybe the price of such an exemption is some leeway for government intervention in what restrictions they can make about the public seeing the games.

If the public granted the leagues an unusual favor, maybe the leagues owe the public some access the teams wish they didn't have to grant.

Our civilization is not always built on 100% pure components. Sometimes we agree to genetically modify some of the components of our civilization.

That, and most (all?) of these teams have benefited by playing in stadiums built largely with taxpayer money.

Years ago, a bill was introduced in the Wisconsin Assembly which would require any game played in a stadium built with public money be made available to free-to-air TV. It died a quiet (but rapid) death.

Perhaps coincidentally, the Commerce Department this week issued a Green Paper on Copyright, restating the administrations support for a full Performance Right on sound recordings, and putting the power of the federal government behind copyright holders.

and ensure consumers can unlock their cell phones, subject to applicable service agreements

Free markets down the drain. Nothing new here. I love when the US Government acts like North Korea censoring speech, and trade /sarcasm.

Prison Industrial Complex at work making more felonies. I choose to live in a free society as a libertarian.

How do we combat the copyright issues? Take a page from the medical marijuana playbook, tax the media devices CD's, MP3 Players, hard drives, and any storage media, and equally distribute it to the agencies ASCAP, BMI, SECAP. The US will not win the war through litigating children and their grandmothers, something the RIAA has not figured out yet.

Are we winning the drug war? No.

I am sure a Republican will promote such bill in the House while the Senate Democrats object. The same old song of gridlock.

Sweet stuff for the manufacturers. But I'll bet they ain't getting fat on royalties. There are way too many ways to avoid this tax.

The royalties don't go to the manufacturers, but to the recording industry.

Already being done. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17/1003

Does it include hard drives and analog recording mediums? I thought that only applied to CD Audio discs.

This happens to be regulation on imports, but people ship items internationally and skirt the law everyday, heck we cannot secure our borders for crying out loud, and millions of illegal aliens come into our country every single day.

How would a layman found out how much is being collected from these manufactures, any fines, penalties or sanctions, etc?

Is it possible there a little bit of exaggeration in that claim?

Let's assume "mllions" equals TWO million per day time 365 days per year equals 730 millions illegal aliens per year. Including the millions and billions of residents who lack 'citizenship legality" ......... the population of our nation is what today?

The process of "self government" requires that the participants speak to each other now and then with a bit of integrity.

Millions? Listening to the conservative commentators, I thought it was ZILLIONS!

EACH...AND...EVERY...DAY

Slow down... read it again. We are discussing how many illegals cross the border daily, not how many listen to radio.

And in a previous message in this thread you wrote:

Prison Industrial Complex at work making more felonies. I choose to live in a free society as a libertarian.

I think we are sitting here in the middle of a 'thread-jack" and have become so confused that we are taking turns shooting at ourselves.

Willdav: I've met very few Libertarians who do not end up shooting themselves in the foot before the conversation is over. You upset and fussing about people who don't obey the laws.... (the laws that you like!) and you are upset and fussing about government that passes laws... because live-free Libertarians know that laws are un-necessary.

You brought up the "Prison Industrial Complex" which has an interesting twist on the fact trhat somehow this thread ended up over in the back-40 where we grow the "illegal alien problem" potted plants that we sell at political rallies.

The "noise machine" tells us there are anywhere from 11 to 13 million illegal aliens living within our society. And more of them fly here legally with Green Cards and Work Permits and they arrive here from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia... more of those folks than there are of the kinds all of the noise is about: those who cross the Mexican border and hopefully could be stopped with fences, more Border Patrol Agents, etc.

So let's assume the larger number: 13 million, and let's assume 7 million came here (temporarily) legally and we are left with maybe 6 million people of Mexican and other south-of-the-border Latin derivation. Based on my observations, this "Latino Problem" has developed over.... let's say the last 33 years. Do the math: 498 people per day make a border crossing that is illegal and become permanent.

So we have these grandiose plans about maybe a double fence and enough new Border Patrol agents to populate a new small country somewhere. Do you know who one of the players is reported to be that keeps fanning this flames and taking an electric cattle prod to our Congressmen to make sure the noise continues while they then manipulate our STATE legislators?

Let's all turn and face that crowd right over there: The Prison Industrial Complex. Reported to be very good lobbyists. You see, if we can get all the states to pass these Arizona style "show me your papers" laws, then we can fill up all the local jails, and they will spill over into the state prisons and there will be a need to turn to the folks who build Private Prisons to come to our rescue. We won't have any place to put all those mobs and hordes of illegal aliens invading us. All 498 per day!!!!

I wonder how many of the stockholders in the Private Prison industry sector run around proclaiming Libertarianism as the salvation of mankind???

If you follow the money..... it's a strange, strange world we live in.

P.S. I'm not totally stupid. I know there are more than 498 per day. Many of "the more" are the "drug mules" the Congressman from Iowa talked about over the week end. They go back and forth, they cross the border, they come by boat, they drive trucks hauling goods between our countries, and probably other methods most of us have never visualized or heard of.

Now can some one tell me how all of this relates to Mr. McCain's bill about Television Consumer Freedom?

Wow! Goat, you should study up on people who advocate freedom. With all due respect, you have a totally wrong idea about it.

I'm teachable. Tell me what totally wrong idea is creating a problem for you.

Prepare you charts and quotes well. I do know the difference between zillions, millions and 498.

I do know that any true form of self government ends up with some covenants and compacts and compromises that the "free spirits" among us don't like. (And that's a 'loving term' my friend... I often speak of my oldest child as "my free spirit".)

And forget not the cliche: Freedom in NOT free. It usually comes at a very high price.... and those who would exercise freedom... should never spend it in a trivial way.

No charts Goat. And not a long involved thing here. I don't need to change your mind to validate my position. Maybe another time. But I will say just this; a free person is not bound by "covenants and compacts and compromises" that other compose. Libertarianism is about doing what you have agreed to do, and not initiating force against innocent persons. If that doesn't interest you, then no amount of detail will either.

I'm really not interested in changing your mind. Only you can really do that. And as for me, and I mean this in a friendly way, I don't personally care if you do or not.

whoa, I was being sarcastic, and I meant to say that millions of illegal aliens are in this country and rising every day.

Libertarians believe in a document called the Constitution, with the Constitution comes private property rights, Would you want someone to break into your house? Well, that is what illegal aliens do, they trespass. With the Constitution comes Common Law, and isn't trespassing against Common Law?

I think the issue I was bringing up was a stonewalled congress. Has anything been done lately? Has the President passed anything of principle that is working? Name one program that the President created that is working well?

Sadly, the bill won't see the light of day, because even though a liberal Republican such as John McCain drafted the bill, His allies in Congress won't bring it up to a vote, and if they do, it won't pass.

For the record, I do support his bill "The Cable Television Freedom Act."

In other news, President Obama was on vacation playing golf with the CEO of Comcast, Do you think he would tell Mr. CEO of Comcast that he supports UN-bundling cable television? Yeah let me bite the hands that feed me.

I fixed your spelling error on millions in your quote, your welcome.
