John Gambling began on WNYM today. Good program.
but he belongs on the morning program.
or have a longer mid day program .
or do pm---drive.

I disagree I think John's WABC show was an excellent use of his talent. He is an excellent interviewer and gets great guests because he us a non-confrontational interviewer. I loved his WABC and listened every day.

get rid of Piscopo & pay Gambing to do 6--10 am. (on WNYM).
But a better spot for Gambling would be mornings on WBBR or WABC.

seems Gambling no longer wants to get up early ., (to do mornings). And----
when Imus leaves--- WABC may move Curtis & Kuby to mornings . Maybe by then---
WOR will hire a morning host.

I have mixed feelings about the new show but I know we shouldn't judge it by the first day. Some thoughts:

1. Gambling's WOR morning show was made especially strong by the presence of J.J. Kennedy. She's not there and it shows.

2. John didn't seem to be in NY. That's OK but he needs to be somewhere. John is very good at describing his surroundings and reacting to the moment. If he makes his location "generic" it will hurt him. Art Bell, for example, never minimized his desert location ... it was part of the show's appeal. Gambling should do the same with Florida.

3. WNYM should get rid of Piscopo immediately because there's an opportunity for a smart, articulate, informed morning host to take audience away from the tired mess on WABC and the amateur effort on WOR. Piscopo isn't that guy. I believe Piscopo will leave on his own once the novelty wears off and the show becomes more of a job than a showcase for his talent (or lack thereof.) At that point I wouldn't be surprised if Gambling slipped into that 7-9 am slot -- that would actually be less of an intrusion into his day. But the show wouldn't be the same as his WOR show for several reasons. He wouldn't be at the center of the action -- in Manhattan -- which probably is important for a morning show, he wouldn't necessarily have the support staff (J.J. in particular) that he had at WOR, and the WNYM signal isn't competitive.

I believe Piscopo and Gambling were both hired for their names. Salem can afford to blow some money on status symbols. Neither host is likely to move the ratings very much -- Piscopo because he's self-absorbed and boring, and Gambling because he's on a weak signal against some solid competition: Simone, Geraldo, Curtis & Kuby, Rush Limbaugh.

maybe with more $$$$ they could talk Gambling into doing 7am to 10 am. (on WNYM ).

its a wonder Bloomberg has not hired Gambling for mornings on WBBR. Mike could afford to pay John.
Maybe Mike & John have discussed it.

In my mind Simone and Geraldo are no competition to Gambling. They and their shows are second rate at best. Simone was best as a fill in...he shows up and doesn't say f--k, and Geraldo was best opening Al Capone's fault!! Gambling is a perfect lead in to C&K....too bad he's not back on WABC!! Oh, and as to needing a team, never had anyone but newsman George Weber at WABC and he did fine. John is a pro...and it shows!!!

should not be too hard for WOR to find a host to hammer Imus & Piscopo in the morning ratings.
But I suppose WOR wants a host who can get some listeners in the 34---54 age group. That may not be so easy.

Why does the WNYM Internet stream keep restarting during the John Gambling Show? It makes his show a tough listen here in the Northern Burbs where 970's matchbook signal is essentially nonexistent.

WNYM likely has John Gambling on the air in an effort to cut into the ratings of Rush,
Simone, Geraldo & Curtis./Kuby. This will likely fail. WNYM has a poor day
signal even with 50,000 watts. John can retire again soon. Or will be fired by his
friends at Salem radio.
