I have mixed feelings about the new show but I know we shouldn't judge it by the first day. Some thoughts:
1. Gambling's WOR morning show was made especially strong by the presence of J.J. Kennedy. She's not there and it shows.
2. John didn't seem to be in NY. That's OK but he needs to be
somewhere. John is very good at describing his surroundings and reacting to the moment. If he makes his location "generic" it will hurt him. Art Bell, for example, never minimized his desert location ... it was part of the show's appeal. Gambling should do the same with Florida.
get rid of Piscopo & pay Gambing to do 6--10 am. (on WNYM).
3. WNYM should get rid of Piscopo immediately because there's an opportunity for a smart, articulate, informed morning host to take audience away from the tired mess on WABC and the amateur effort on WOR. Piscopo isn't that guy. I believe Piscopo will leave on his own once the novelty wears off and the show becomes more of a job than a showcase for his talent (or lack thereof.) At that point I wouldn't be surprised if Gambling slipped into that 7-9 am slot -- that would actually be less of an intrusion into his day. But the show wouldn't be the same as his WOR show for several reasons. He wouldn't be at the center of the action -- in Manhattan -- which probably
is important for a morning show, he wouldn't necessarily have the support staff (J.J. in particular) that he had at WOR, and the WNYM signal isn't competitive.
I believe Piscopo and Gambling were both hired for their names. Salem can afford to blow some money on status symbols. Neither host is likely to move the ratings very much -- Piscopo because he's self-absorbed and boring, and Gambling because he's on a weak signal against some solid competition: Simone, Geraldo, Curtis & Kuby, Rush Limbaugh.
