John The Freak Renshaw

After listening to about an hour over three days in the past weeks, I know why he is in Louisville now.
I tried to be objective. Just mediocre stuff.

Don't forget Louisville is a college town with no pro teams.

I am more talking about his content and creativeness.
There is a reason he is in a town like Louisville, because he does not have a strong ratings rpoducing history and a self destructive background. No big name station in a big market would touch him.
Many guys in smaller markets find creative ways to market themselves with great opinion driven talk and content.
I've hired many. He used to have a spark and though inconsistent, had good moments.

I think he still has great moments. It is the baseball season, with very little NBA talk because of the Louisville market. I don't know much about his "breakdown" in KC, but he did mention on the air that it was because of a bad break up and his medicine was too strong. He did mention that he worked in the ATL, do you remember him on the air your market?

Yes, I know of his work in Atlanta. Those are the smells of burning embers coming up 75. More burned bridges.
At one time he seemed like a fast track guy, but those who knew him here said he was more style than substance.
One of the sports stations in town refers to him on their show every once in a while because their producer used to be associated with him, maybe in Miami. They drop his name every now and again.
There are 2 sports stations in the market and plenty of job openings over the years here in Atlanta, nobody has shown an interest.
One of the sports hosts here told a story once on air after he left about how he was giving pointers to him at a remote on how to be better at his job. Let's just say that this host has been nothing but successful and Renshaw is in Louisville.
I've heard far less talented hosts get gigs because of the personal mess he became.
He needs to do a better product now to show his creativity. Then maybe someone will pluck him out of Louisville.
You seem like you are up for the job of press agent!

HA! I'm just a huge sports talk fan who happens to be a board-op in Louisville. I remember listening to him on One On One Sports and Fox when he was on. Let me know if you need a producer in ATL!

You really seem to just have a thing for this guy. Though, as we spoke of in another thread I won't disagree about his past or the talent he possesed. We all agree he kinda screwed himself. But, give it a rest already. Maybe, hawkins is a fan & enjoys him even in what is a down time in sports talk. Is there really a need to continue to drive the stake thru the heart? It's a bit excessive and just ponderous. Did he burn you at one of your alleged stations? For God's sake man. I think you generally get it, but you are just over the top negative here on this poor guy.

Sportsdotcom,
With all due respect, you have no clue about my understanding of the situation. You also will find no false attacks.
Like you, we are all entitled to an opinion. if a guy posts about a sports talk show host in Louisville, we are all welcome to discuss. If you actually read closely, you will see I felt he was a guy with lots of talent and potential.
His burned bridges are well documented and have seemed to be the trend as he leaves each market behind.
You post whatever positive spin you have and I'll discuss reality.

The sports radio landscape has changed drastically overall in the past few years. For years the only thing the Dickeys had going for them was Buck Belue and John Kincade in afternoon drive. They were the only show that seemed to get ratings and was sold well. 790 beat 680 head to head most books for the first four years of this current duel. The last 4 years have been a different story. 790 now only gets ratings with the Stews. With Men 25-54, 790 has been beaten out in every time slot head to head for a few years now. Buck and Kincade won the battle head to head with the Stews, those both shows did great against each other. Then 790 made the poor choice to move them out of drive time and has waved the white flag with a show called the Saloon. Buck and Kincade are the long time champs of sports radio, but the Stews have enormous popularity too. 680's morning show with old FM jock Chris Rude has been the biggest surprise. Rude has dominated Steak and the 790 gang (almost 3 to 1 M25-54 last book). Rude has provided the perfect balance to his partner a guy named Perry and they have been cruising. 680 has actually caused many in my building to take notice. They are closer to a long standing WSB with Men than they are with 790. The sports talk battle, in a huge upset if you look back 4 years is clearly 680's crown.

With all due respect to you. I like you, worked in the business in management and know as much about Renshaw & his own misdeeds as anyone. I don't have to spin anything. The guy's career is where it is b/c of his own doing. You just seem to constantly berate anyone who even writes anything remotely positive about the guy. It's just getting old. We all do have opinions and hawkins or anyone else should be allowed to voice it w/ out the school teacher coming in & chastising them for their opinions.

Now, that's reality.

Sports, it is about the sharing of ideas and opinions and facts.
If you want to be the propaganda arm, do that. If you like him, post it.
If a subject is posted about a host from Louisville who has been bounced froim every market he works and I have some personal knowledge, I'll share it.
You feel free to do the same.
I am not trying to change your opinion, just making sure that facts get in to the story.

No one is spreading propaganda. So, silly to even say that. The facts have been out there about him already. My point is you seem to be beating a deadhorse in more ways than one. ::)

Well if I stop seeing posts about hosts from Louisville then I won't be beating anything.
I wonder why they keep popping up? Hmmmmm.
It is obvious major market PD's are not talking this guy up. There must be some agenda.
Again, lots of discussion over some non-factor talents.

It's useless. Alright, Agent Mulder ::)

ATL is the sports place between heaven and hell.

Sure it's a big market, but the listener's don't care about what's happening on the field, much less on the air.

You better be able to relate to a segment of the listener on other topics or just pack it in.

They're top 10 in size, but for sports, there's about 324 markets I'd go to first.

McCloskey that is flat out ridiculous.
I work with the 50,000 watt news talker on AM, but am very familiar with both sports operations in town.
The Atlanta sports radio market (680 and 790) is one of the highest billers in America.
680 is the most highly rated ESPN Radio affiliate nationally even though they only carry Colin and Tirico in 6a-7p.
The market has the Two Live Stews who are nationally prominent and syndicated.
Kincade is the top bench guy for ESPN Radio fill-ins.
The these guys are all making a killing between salary and endorsements.
Other than the Fan in NY, WEEI, WIP and the Ticket, you would be hard pressed to find better opportunity.

I generally agree w/ ATL on this one. His revenue numbers are accurate, but as far as content there are a few other stations in the country that are possibly better than either. Though, it's all subjective.

I would take either station in Chicago over the stations in ATL (even w/ Mike North gone). WTEM in DC has both Steve Czaban & Andy Pollin on their station. WAXY in Miami has Dan LeBatard, Jorge Sedano, and Sid Rosenberg on theirs. All those guys are or have been a national presence.

I think KFAN in Minneapolis is a very good station. KJR in Seattle is a fantastic station as well. WHB in KC is a ratings grabber & revenue generator. So, there are plenty of stations across the country that are equal or better than either of the 2 stations in ATL.

So ATL I'm with you for the most part. McCloskey's assessment may be based on bad attendance numbers at sporting events. But, as far as content, I happen to agree w/ McCloskey that there are stations with equal or greater talent.
