Journal to buy WNOX 100.3

Journal is placing a TV buy to start April 1st....

A local TV rep got an avail from Journal's agency this week.

Opie Joe was rumored to be seen canoodling with Angelina Jolie over Salisbury steak at Wrights Cafeteria.

Given Johnny's storied history, did anyone else expect him to go out with a bang instead of a whimper?

Tennessee Cowboy said:
I guess not, then.

What do you want us to say?

That he's changed the landscape of the Knoxville radio market and finally made it a level playing field among the 100kw signals while swamping all the rimshots?

Ok. That.

I'm sure there are several here that were halfway wondering if he was going to pull another rabbit out of his hat.

I'm just glad it's finally sold, and I'm ready for Journal to get on the ball & take over. I noticed that as part of the sale, Journal was requiring some transmitter upgrades. (I'm guessing maybe HD upgrade to match their other stations). Maybe that's part of what they're waiting for.
As far as Pirkle, nothing against him, but I just thought his stations always sounded really cheaply ran. I used to hate "I 100" back in the day when I was in my teens/20s. I always thought it was a horribly programmed & produced CHR, with little money or research put into it. I much preferred crosstown "95-3 TNZ" over them. And also, the recent news/talk format was really awful as well. Once again, weak shows & virtually no money spent on professional imaging and promos for the station. (it all sounds like cheap, in house stuff). About the only format that I really thought they put a bit of money & effort into was the Hitkicker country format in the mid 90's. They had Mark Driscoll doing sweepers & used the Young Country jingle package. And they hired a good PD (Brian Landrum), who knew how to program a young leaning country format.

Anyway, some may lament the loss of a local owner, but personally, I'm glad it's once again in the hands of a company that will actually spend some money on creating a professional, larger market sounding station. So, bring on "Q100" & "Classic Hits 93.1" :) (if that's truly what they are going to do, as per rumors).

This should be something to watch. Cumulus now seems too big to make adjustments to a challenge. And a good chunk of Journal employees used to work there and know their soft spots. WIVK's low spot was a 15 share last year. They're back up to a 19 now. There must be a lot of people betting WIVK will be even with WJXB this spring.

All that aside, who ever expected that JP would be gift wrapping some substantial assets as a gift for Allen Dick?

So, anyone have thoughts when 100.3 will actually flip? I'm ready for one less talk station on FM. Also hopeful that 93.1 goes classic hits. We'll see.

I had a dream where Journal took 100.3 country and ran straight at WIVK. When they pulled the frog below a 20 share they LMA’d it to James A. and Allen Cumulus. But it was all a dream. Couldn’t happen here ever.

I had a dream that someone made an intelligent, factual based comment on this forum But it was just a dream. It would never happen here.

That, sir, is a tall order. Most of the facts reside with the few that do not talk. Most of the rest is speculation from those of us who know little, and a little bit of shilling from those who know something, but not enough.

Then there are those who push an occasional button or two to watch the response. And that genuinely wasn't directed at you, Cueburned.

But the facts are quite compelling in and of themselves:

100.3's seller dumped his signature asset quickly and for less-than-optimal money on the eve of a state supreme court win by someone with a good shot at winning twice as much in damages. He remains obligated for programming and needs to find a rimshot that trusts him enough to partner with him.

100.3's buyer is looking to unseat the perennial market-dominant station with many of the same people who knew how the dominant station got there in the first place. Its home office is used to generating big shares serving a young audience. The big question is, how quickly can they grow their shares? And can this be done quickly enough to satisfy home office? A home office that remembers double-digit shares on 93.1 with CHR, and will likely face great temptation to change format on its new station over the next couple of years. Currently 25% of the market shares are country.

Both buyer and seller are facing uphill battles. These two companies should keep this board hopping for years.

So...is tomorrow the last morning show on 100.3 for the dynamic duo?

There was a tv ad schedule that was supposed to start April 1 for the new station, but I hear that was delayed until May 6th, so I'd guess that WNOX will remain "as is" until then.

Man, Journal sure does drag their feet. If this had been a larger market or a purchase by someone like Clear Channel, it would've happened months ago. (one of the bad things about being in a medium market. No pressure or real sense of urgency. Wish this place was a little faster paced!). Anyway, I'm ready for the flip & ready to see if it produces other changes in the market.

Yeah, they are definitely moving really, really slow on this. I hear there are a lot of internal problems at Journal which is probably the reason for the delays.

Perhaps they're having difficulty finding title insurance.

IIRC Title insurance is for "land" or deeds. The transmitter site would be covered. But with the many TV towers around K'town that have the height to cover Oak Ridge the transmitters site could be moved. In fact for signal building penetration one of the TV towers might work better for more people. Of course there would be a loss of coverage in KY part of coverage of 100.3 but how many of the Knoxville diaries end up in Corbin KY
