If they adjust the music...

They have KAZG and KOAI on one side, and KESZ and KYOT on the other. Also, if they lean even more towards classic rock, it may not be easy to go against a station like WSLX.

Unlike iHeart, Audacity (that's how I'm spelling it from now on) really seems to struggle when it comes to music based formats.
Classic hits stations like WCBS-FM remain strong performers. And KMLE recovered by bringing back the legendary branding, and overtook KNIX as a result.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. But seriously, you'll find a lot more success stories with iHeart.

I wonder what changes were made at KMLE for that to happen, or...is something going on at KNIX that's driving listeners away?
Based on BDS they did a real local music test and adjusted rotations and artist separations.

The top ACs (and often overall) in Boston and Hartford as well: WMJX and WRCH. Going the juvenile route of making fun of the company's name is no more appropriate for Audacy that it is for iHeart, ummm, I mean iHeart. (Sorry, the middle schooler in me came out for a second there,)

I don't think the same amount of effort was given to save KOOL. Do you know if anything was done in an attempt to turn things around for KOOL?

As I said earlier, I'm expecting them to do a rebrand, similar to what they did with WOGL in Philadelphia.

I guess that I find it puzzling how changing the name is able to lower the demographics. And Phoenix is not Philadelphia, so what worked there may not happen in Phoenix.

That name change removes the stigma of "that's my parent's radio station" or "that station used to be good but now it sucks".

We'll see, won't we? The two stations appear to have similar problems.
And in both cases, the problem is mostly that the station is perceived as being "old".

The "KOOL" name attached to the Phoenix station was once thought of as "World Famous" (according to some CBS-era liners). This would be like Audacy changing the name of their struggling "World Famous" KROQ in L.A. I haven't thought about "Oldies" era music with the KOOL branding since the mid-to-late 2000s, when they were focused on '60s and '70s music.

"Kool" here in NH/VT is attached to a three-station simulcast of '60s and '70s oldies. In Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts it is used by several stations and translators carrying a '70s/'80s classic hits format. The music on both can safely be called old in 2022, and the branding would definitely hold the stations back if they were to wake up and shift their focus to '90s and beyond.

I’m not sure what the domain is, but are we sure it’s not an all out format change?

KOOL-FM is sadly very boring like most of Audacy’s classic hits stations. Audacy removed the jingles and other things that made the station unique. I’m surprised they would be heavy 55+ considering KOAI. I’d be surprised if they’re having demographic issues like WOGL - the ratings are overall just bad. They’re already playing 90s music (they’re playing “Come
As You Are” by Nirvana right now) so I don’t think the playlist would need to be modernized like WOGL did with an increase in 90s and 00s music concurrent with their name change.

KOOL used to be a powerhouse oldies station, even pre-PPM. They did well in to the 2010s, but the station has been faltering for a while.

Perhaps it would do them some good to add those things back to the station...
Did Audacy choose a new Classic Hits format captain this year that has made those changes, or have they been in place before this year?

The station was doing well just as recently as last year (even reaching #2 in 25-54 last July), so it wouldn't make much sense to me that the name would suddenly go out of favor or give the station an old image in just a year's time.
