July '22 6+ and More

Glad to see the WOW factor continues to do well. I find the trainwreck segues a bit much though. I wish someone would put the Me TV stream from Chicago on a station here. It's more of a yahct rock/lite rock approach with some true wow songs that I forgot about (Get Used to It by Roger Vodouris and Sweetheart by Franke and the Knockouts are a couple of examples, definitely remember them on the radio in Phoenix in the early 80s).

They hired a new PD who brought in a new morning show, and revived the station's old branding.
IIRC, the "new" PD is someone who was previously the APD or MD and has some history at the 840. That's a good thing IMO. The morning show is the same one they've had for awhile...Gunner and Cheyenne, unless they've forgotten to update their website.

As for KOOL (again going off the website) it looks like they still have local mornings, middays, and afternoons. Wonder how they managed to get that past the bean counters at Audacy...

As for the WOW Factor, I'm pleasantly surprised to see it not only surviving, but outperforming expectations. I listen on the 103.9 HD2 signal, and it sounds much better than the rimshot mains.

But it is below 25th in revenue, because it appeals to a group that most advertisers are not seeking. Of course, with no jocks and little promotion, it is cheap to run and probably makes a bit of money for a cluster that has two other stations that each outbill The Wow Factor about four to five to one.

You mean like a small group of people who are passionate about something most younger people no longer care about or are even aware exists like a discussion forum about radio?

All I was saying is that I like what they're doing. I was skeptical at first, but they earned a spot on my presets. Are they rolling in money or out-billing other stations in the market? No, but I enjoy it.

Did Audacy choose a new Classic Hits format captain this year that has made those changes, or have they been in place before this year?
Chris Ebbott, who programs KRTH, became the format captain within the last few years. KRTH notably has this dry presentation 101tm was mentioning. Also of note, Larry Morgan, who does nights at KRTH and is the assistant PD there, took over programming of KOOL back in July.

No, more like passionate about playing the same half-dozen songs over and over and over again. Because who needs to hear "Brown Eyed Girl" again for the umpteenth time?

Meanwhile, 92.7 continues to stike it out of the ballpark time and time again. Really hoping someone at New Times appreciates what a great station is for Best of Phoenix time.

94.5 has entered stunt mode. RadioInsight has a post but it’s not letting me paste the link properly.

Just relaunched. Big 94.5, imaging identical to WOGL. First song is Big Time by Peter Gabriel.

Funny...I didn't see Lance's post, but it was a relatively easy guess, given what we know.

Hopefully they'll add some new talent and start doing appearances around town.

I guess what is still left to be seen is if all they're doing is a name change. As of now, air schedule seems the same, and the music mix has so far not been anything out of left field other than "Crazy Train".

We had discussed in another thread how KYOT leans more classic rock, KOOL leaned more pop. KOOL's ratings were lackluster, while KYOT is ahead. Philly's Big 98.1 notably took on a rock lean when it got revamped. Curious to see if that trend continues here.

As previously mentioned, KOOL-FM had already been adding more music to the 1990s and 2000s to the playlist. More music from those decades were part of the musical adjustments that accompanied the rebrand at WOGL, but given that those adjustments had already taken place at KOOL-FM before today, it will be interesting to see where they take the music.

Perhaps the lack of response to those musical changes is what necessitated the rebrand. In other words, they'd make music changes and people wouldn't sample the station to hear those changes. They were, as The Eagles say, "already gone." So now with the rebrand, perhaps some people will sample the station and hear those changes. The response to the WOGL rebrand was pretty quick.
