...ahh, the dog daze of summer when everyone is in San Diego escaping our lovely weather (and radio stations). Here's July:

Two country stations in the Valley and neither one could crack the top 10! Could KYOT be getting closer to Rush Radio 95.5? :)
 
Might even be 6+ which is all ArbyTron gives out to the unwashed masses
for Purple People Meter markets.

still have their top hats?

R-I listed a bunch of stations at the bottom with no numbers to report...
but where is Lumberyard 1440 and the Big 'BSZ?

I wonder how out of no where KMXP just pops up and beats everybody? That used to be KOOL or KFYI or even KEZ's "job".
KMXP is a good station, but I wouldn't say they are all THAT great. I do like KBIG's format style strategy a little more.

Phoenix Ratings Grid here.

The July 2010 survey period is from Thu. 6/24/10-Wed. 7/21/10. The next survey period is for August 2010 running from Thu. 7/22/10-Wed. 8/18/10 with the publicly released age 6+ overall data available on Monday 9/13/10.

1 2 3 4 5 6 and then everyone else, seems more on point. Look at that huge gap between the 5+ group and the 3.8-and-under crowd. The market seems to shaking out with a tiny number of stations with huge followings, one station with a relatively small but almost fanatically tenacious group of listeners (average listening time must be phenomenal at KFYI for that cume to generate that AQH), then a whole lot of irrelevant noise.

If by "good" you mean "bland and repetitive", sure. But they're hardly an out of nowhere, Cinderella story, type of thing. They've been at or above 6.2 in five straight periods. I suspect a lot of that is involuntary listening, businesses and offices piping in the station (probably because it is bland and repetitive and thus, somehow, inoffensive*) getting picked up by the meters. It's difficult to believe that one-third of all Phoenix residents deliberately tuned the station in at some point last month; there's just no there there.

* -- "Bland and repetitive" is, of course, highly offensive to folks who pay attention to what they're hearing. But the oblivious buy stuff too, and there's a whole lot more of them, so...

Actually the "bland and repetitive" was supposed to be represented by "I wouldn't say they are all THAT great". ;D

You'd think that with KMXP "ruling the charts", that we'd have a CHR station like WSTR and WWWQ instead of the "Urban city of Atlanta". You'd think we'd have a leading pop rock leaning chr instead of a FEW rhythmic leaning chr's. Hmmm, maybe KMVA is on to something here.... Anyway, while we're still here thinking, I might as well add in you would also think that KESZ would be the at work station. I guess KMXP knew they were doing something right by doing what they do all along. Less is more, I guess, is the lesson learned here!

But you do have to admit KMXP plays more good hits back to back than many other stations where you may have to sit through a few "things" to get to your next favorite highly known hit. I'm not complaining about those other stations because after all I like open variety, but once again I will remind you that my taste are not "the norm"... as you can see by the type of posts I've produced here over time, so my opinions regarding having more variety is better are somewhat irrelevant.

Closed circuit for new PD Jeff: it's supposed to be some sort of Elvis Weekend,
but I don't think I've heard any Elvis. Is he now totally demo deadly? Even
his late '60s-early '70s stuff? (I suppose Return To Sender would be totally
out of the question.)

How long is KKNT going to be happy with being #30? Seriously....adding Mark Levin, a screaming moron, to compete with the screaming moron Michael Savage?

Put Dennis Miller on at a normal time, and say good bye to Hugh Hewitt, his show has become a christian evangelical talkfest lately... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Only thing they got going for them is that they beat 1100, but so does static....

Salem won't drop one of their wholly-owned shows, so Hewitt's not going anywhere. Miller is problematic to run in any kind of decent daypart thanks to its oddly timed live feed, as 7-10a doesn't really work here unless Salem wants to pull a KFYI and run the rest of their programs on a one-hour TD (given that Phoenix is a big source of callers, that's clearly not on the table), and running Miller (live or canned) in any daytime position interferes with the Salem all-our-owned-shows-in-one-block philosophy, anyway. (Although that's seeing more than a few cracks in major markets already, especially the hodgepodge that KRLA has become and KSKY is becoming.)

Well then, KKNT better just get used to being in the basement with terrible shows and settling for sleazy sponsors. Salem did crack a bit when some stations wisely dropped the brainless Mike Gallagher. Does KKNT want to be a bottom feeder with terrible quality control, or do they want to actually compete? Prager still has a respectable show, Medved still is listenable, though lately he has been pretty embarrassing. But Levin? Dear Lord that show is terrible! Nasally challenged guy screams for an hour, no dissent, no actual information or give and take, just Mark Levin screaming in a girly high pitched voice. I'd love for KKNT to try a local show, but that would mean getting equipment that wasn't bought in 1962. They have a good signal, they can crack into the ratings, but they are saddled with crap offerings.

OMG! I'm actually hearing an Elvis song--from 1957 :eek:--on KOOL. Jailhouse Rock.

If the Old Gringo's in town, I fully expect him to drop by 840 North tomorrow and read
the demographics riot act to new PD Jeff. ;)

Probably a matter of when, not if. Rush Radio 95.5 seems inevitable. :)
 
Rush Radio 95.5 might be inevitable, but this being Cheap Channel, they will be a day late and a dollar short. They will continue to milk money out of 550 until it is completely dead and the brand beyond repair. At that point, 95.5 will be a wasted frequency.

Cox just made a similar move in Atlanta...as of today, News/Talk WSB is on both 750 AM and (ironically) 95.5 FM.

Below is a great article on the subject. It mentions that the previous station/format on 95.5 (Rhythmic CHR "95.5 the Beat") moves to the HD2 signal of 95.5 (and online)...presumably as a music-only station.
