July PPM: Where Did Country Go?

July was not a good month for Atlanta's 2 country stations. Aside from that, not many surprises. Journey showed up as did 99X. Tight battle among B98.5, Q100 and Star 94. Slight drought at The River.

I guess they (Country and WSB listeners) where out of town on vacation.

Just an observation, The River started doing 2 or 3 by the same artist on weekends and started 50 minutes non stop instead of 52 minutes every hour and they suffered (4.2 to 2.7) in the 6+ beauty contest. Maybe less than 400 songs over and over and over and over and over and over is best for 97.1. I wonder who gets the blame. I happen to like 97.1 now That might be bad them. When I was doing radio, if it liked it I did not play it !!! If I thought it sucked it would be a hit.

My guess would be that there were not a lot of Country crossover HITS this summer.
Country was there, but just not exciting or moving over to Pop radio.

Now what happened to WSRV? What has Cumulus done to this station? It looks
like just as ratings were working in June.........they pulled the rug out from under it.

For all the braying on this board about Bob Neil's heavy hand at Cox--he's now gone. Retired and out of the picture, and as a result station program directors are encouraged to "experiment" by management

Bob was/is a research junkie, and never made a move without consulting research which showed what the audience actually wanted.

It'll be interesting to see how things will work out. My bet is with the Bob Neil approach, because it worked, from both a ratings and revenue perspective. "Experimenting" with multi-million dollar properties, making playlists deeper, opening things up...I'm not a believer. I've always thought that radio is like fast food: no one ever goes into McDonald's and wonders where the "variety on the menu" is. They just order and pay for the same stuff, over and over.

Even satellite radio consumers tend to narrow their choices quickly, consuming no more than 3 stations regularly. And they have hundreds from which to choose.

Most people 25-54 don't eat at MickeyD's because:
1. There's no variety
2. The food sux
Sounds much like today's radio based on "research."

I agree: but if you have kids, MickeyD's is the bomb! Great toys and most have a "playland". IMHO breakfast is the best food they serve. They are targeting the under 25's quite well. Just ask "The King" who is now unemployed!

And those kids are pushing buttons wanting to hear Star, Q, Wild, and maybe Project.

What about Rock 100? Looks like they got passed by WGST!! I do not believe this station is that "signal challenged". CC has done well with their "signal challenged" WWVA. What is CC going to do with the Project?
