Alternative / AA = classic hits* / oldies. Both have succeed in other markets but not here. Is it the Atlanta radio market or is it a case of "bad presentation" form the operators?
*IMHO 97.1 is really a classic rock station. WSRV list themselves as Classic Hits in Arbitron. When I think of classic hits I think of a WCBS FM or KLUV (Dallas) type of presentation.
In a spot this morning River referred to what they play as "classic rock". That was the first time as I recall that they called their playlist that.
I think the problem with alt is that you have Project, 99X, and Dave splitting the audience between them. And I do agree about presentation. Plus, for some reason 80s new wave/alt doesn't seem to play well with 90s or 00s/10s. Maybe that's presentation and playlist design, too.
A 70s/80s classic hits station would do well if Journey wasn't in the picture, River stuck to classic AOR, and someone took the time to develop a proper playlist and maintain it.
