1955: Actress Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) is born in Carbondale, Illinois.

1961: Dave Garroway, the original host of The Today Show, is fired by NBC. The dismissal comes after months of Garroway’s increasingly uneven performances, increasingly volatile disagreements with staff, and demands for a new contract. His downfall is attributed to both his growing codeine addiction, as well as despondency over the suicide of his wife. Garroway would also eventually take his own life in 1982.

1970: Actress Leah Rimini (King of Queens) is born in Bensonhurst (Brooklyn), New York.

1996: Former New York Yankees play-by-play announcer Mel Allen dies, aged 83.

2002: The Dead Zone debuts on USA Network. The episode draws 6.4 million viewers, the highest rating ever for a cable series premiere.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)
