1907: Actor Jack Albertson (Chico and the Man) is born in Malden, Massachusetts.
1943: Actress Joan Van Ark (Knots Landing) is born in New York City.
1955: Actress Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) is born in Carbondale, Illinois.
1959: Actor George Reeves (The Adventures of Superman) dies of a gunshot wound to the head, aged 45. The death is ruled a suicide, but since then, the mysterious aspects of his death have led to many theories and much discussion about the alternative explanation of murder.
1961: Dave Garroway, the original host of The Today Show, is fired by NBC. The dismissal comes after months of Garroway’s increasingly uneven performances, increasingly volatile disagreements with staff, and demands for a new contract. His downfall is attributed to both his growing codeine addiction, as well as despondency over the suicide of his wife. Garroway would also eventually take his own life in 1982.

1996: Former New York Yankees play-by-play announcer Mel Allen dies, aged 83.
2002: The Dead Zone debuts on USA Network. The episode draws 6.4 million viewers, the highest rating ever for a cable series premiere.
