June '20 trends

That would be novel. Maybe trend-setting. "You don't know the market" isn't an attack on your overall knowledge or acumen; you don't know the market nuance; just as we don't know the market nuance of San Juan, Quito or Cleveland (which so many people say "is just like Buffalo, but bigger." Cleveland is Cleveland, it isn't a bigger Buffalo.) Every market, whether it's your home base of Cleveland or Palm Springs has an undercurrent, a vibe, a history, even a seamy underbelly of the market. It can take countless months, even years, especially in Buffalo, to understand it.

I'll quote "Clarin" which is the largest newspaper in Argentina, with 1.2 million circulation when I worked there for Emmis:

"It took a foreigner to show (us) Argentines that we liked Argentine rock". That was after picking a format based on 3 days of observation in a market I had not been in for at least a decade, refining it with research from Edison, and going to a double-the-next-station #1 ratings in a single month.

My point, besides showing off my trophy, is that insiders, locals and seeming experts sometimes do that old "forest for the trees" thing.

In the Dominican Republic nobody thought that a personality morning show would work. I hired two guys who's main fame was each being fired from many of the principal stations in Santo Domingo, trained them one evening and launched the next day. That was in 1986, and the show has been #1 in every book since, even beating the ratings of the top prime time TV shows on many occasions.

So I'd say that Randy was successful because he was inspired, not because of where he was from. The inner flame was there, and would have burnt bright in Bismark, ND or New Iberia, LA.

The only thing I learned in Cleveland was how not to do radio, working at WJMO and WCUY. So where I was from was nearly irrelevant. I learned radio from WLS, WABC, WTIX, KOMA and the like. I got a quick course from Todd Storz days before he died. But what mattered was where I was, not what I had left.

I'll mention a phone call I had with the owner of a new station in Karachi: "But i don't know the language, the culture or the core religious beliefs". "Yes, but you know radio".

Sometimes fresh eyes keep things from growing old. Sometimes outsiders see St. Elmo's Fire where others see ashes.

The actual guy who took KB apart, or at least set the wheels in motion, was Larry Anderson at WGR.

Anderson also took 97 Rock "apart" when he gutted the station and took it Adult Contemporary to compete with WBUF. Didn't turn out well.

Thank you Dave for being a voice without prejudice.

From puffery to pandering. Thread complete.

Pandering? Because Dave makes sense about everything and knows his stuff......and you don't? That's not pandering. That's calling something correctly. The fact is, you don't like the facts...because you have nothing to do with them. The fact is, you would not know how to walk across the street alone, let alone run a successful broadcast operation. I know that because of all the times you have been totally wrong on this board.

I don't pander. I swim the opposite direction. All you do Rusty is nothing but get angry watching others succeed. When you are man enough to private email me, admit who you are (because I already know), and have a discussion, i will take you seriously. Right now, I don't. Although you take me seriously....because i have a proven track record. You hate to admit that. You call it "puffery" because you hate anyone talking about success.

It's funny, because I know who most the people on this board are....without "calling you out", here are the real life initials of our frequent guests. LW, CR, BW, CW, JJ, JP,. CK, GT, AW. just to name a few, many, many from the bankrupt Cumulus, with a scattering from Townsquare and ETM. Others are outside the market.

Ask me how I know this.....I won't tell anyway.

Keep dreaming....

Stop your nasty comments now. There will be no more warnings.

Sir, it's your board. The TOS are clearly understood. It is my intent to comply with the TOS because I genuinely appreciate the opportunity you offer. But "Nasty?" I'm one of the most congenial posters in the esteemed history of these boards. To the best of my recollection, never have I made ad hominem attacks as have one or two other notables on this board. True, I've sometimes cajoled and robustly engaged with others here, but I've just as often conceded points, complimented posters and thanked them for their responses (including this thread.) Always in good nature, never threatening. Ever.

Now then... perhaps I should consider buying a billboard near the Kensington proclaiming my being #1 in congeniality. Maybe a digital kiosk. Although... a roving sandwich board might get more publicity.

Rusty,

It accomplishes absolutely nothing to get into an online pissing contest. Advertising is built on puffery and opinion. "Truth in advertising" is a thing of the past. Don't let it get to you.

Frank

Your post about me earlier was nasty. Many things you have said about me are nasty. I am not going to just let someone attack me, especially when I try my best to just provide the facts as I know them to be. Maybe you should try getting into the drivers seat of a media company everyday. It is not easy. I risked everything I had to purchase my company, including giving up a position at ETM where I made way over 200k per year. Not only do I own the radio stations, but we LMA with 2 Canadian stations, I also own a billboard company, and I have a very successful advertising agency. Just give me a break when you are trying to put arrows in me. I am guessing there are not many media owners on this board, except Dave,I have been advised many times to just not bother with this board because their a total waste of time, but for some reason I like to let posters know the real deal from inside the war room. I sincerely want posters to know the good, bad and ugly. Yet every time I do, I get kicked in the teeth as “crowing “ or “ arrogant” or “ puffery” . I am not like that at all. I remember the years I spent sleeping on radio station floors, working every holiday at midnight at WYRK, just because I loved it, missing all kinds of opportunities with family and friends because I loved doing the 80s show every sat nite on 1025. I did that show for free for 9 years because they had no budget! I apologize if I sound like I am beating my own drum, but I am damn proud of the team I have and the success we’ve built. And when I say that we are the #1 radio station, at least I am promoting our industry. I don’t see any other radio station promoting itself on billboards, Tv, print , for the past three years! That is a huge key to weck success.
