June 2014 Ratings for Philadelphia

5/22-6/18. KYW 1060's and WPHT 1210's numbers better be low enough for them and CBS to finally make changes and end the status quo with the station.

Is it just me or does the headline suggest that actual ratings were posted here? For the record, new numbers are supposed to be out today. Couldn't wait, Julius?

I don't think the numbers will come out until 5 PM today, I guess.

If today is numbers day, then the numbers were already made available to the subscribing stations, probably at 10 AM or Noon. The beauty contest 6+ numbers wouldn't be public until 5 PM today.

KYW at 4.0, WPHT 2.2. time for CBS to make decisions for both stations. remaining flat in the ratings is not good. Cume is also down for both stations.

WHYY-FM is the number one talk station in town.

Oldies/Classic hits is up.

And Ben is in 11th place, just a shade out of the top 10 (and nipping at KYW)....wow. Impressive showings by WOGL, WMGK and WXTU. Given a disaster of a Phillies season, no shocker to see WPHT steady and a summer slide at WIP.

A lot of stations [both AM and FM] in the Philly 12+ PPM ratings for June were down. It's summer less folks around so fewer ears listening. KYW didn't drop. WPHT actually went up 0.1, granted not a lot, but the bottom didn't fall out either. Possibly that tiny increase is due to Phillies baseball. Odd thing is 94.1 WIP-FM dropped and they too carry the Phillies. Of course with out real break downs as to when folks are listening to a given station this is all surmise. The Phils may have helped both 94.1 and 1210 from having even worse ratings as their other programming may have plunged while the Phillies brought listeners to both stations.

I saw that too Fred, that Oldies and Classic hit stations were up. Yep its summertime and listening habits change. Sitting on the beach with Oldies or Classic Hits in the background, enjoying some cold beverage sounds like a good combination to me.

That analysis does not apply to share, which always shows a 100% total. Share is the relative percentage of total radio listening each individual station gets.

Seasonal variations would be seen in rating and AQH persons, but not share.

I really doubt that people take their PPM devices to the beach. They likely leave them and the docks at home... and they certainly don't take them out on the sand or into the water.

Setting aside all the criticisms of ratings methodology, there is a so-called "margin of error" in any sampling, so you are likely to see small variations in numbers.

The idea that seasons or weather causes significant changes in listening is one of radio's favorite unsubstantiated myths. People who go to the radio when snow is expected will also go when hurricanes or thunderstorms or heat waves are expected.

People won't take PPMs to the beach? Really? The same people who WILL take smartphones, tablets and laptops?

Besides with smartphones, tablets and laptops who needs radio (for weather or anything else).

The idea that seasons or weather causes significant changes in listening is one of radio's favorite unsubstantiated myths.

It's highly documented. I just ran a correlation analysis of the changes in listening patterns on stations in Dallas and Tarrant counties in the Dallas market using the end of the school year in the public school system as a base point, and there is high correlation, year after year. Similarly, we can see weather incidents affecting ratings using daily or weekly PPM data... all highly substantiated in multiple markets.

In fact, those of us in the PPM roll out markets saw repeated Arbitron presentations about how a single hot guest interview on the Stern show could hype the ratings for a whole week, and we could see the specific hour spike in the daily reports. Arbitron showed subscribers how to break out sports events, hot news days, weather events and such. All significant events can be seen very clearly in PPM data.

People won't take PPMs to the beach? Really?

The PPM needs to be charged daily. Unlike the tiny chargers for cellphones, each PPM in a household has a docking station which both charges the PPM and sends the previous day's data back to Nielsen. No family is going to pack up those individual docking stations and cart them around. And even if they did, nobody is going to carry the PPM device onto the beach or boardwalk.

The same people who WILL take smartphones, tablets and laptops?

Most people don't take laptops onto a beach. They sure don't take a tablet, as none have adequate contrast and brightness for the beach. And since the smartphone is a multipurpose device, it does usually get carried... but not a separate, bulky PPM which has no perceivable benefit. In addition, people who are traveling generally have much more limited radio access and opportunity times.

Besides with smartphones, tablets and laptops who needs radio (for weather or anything else).

Bingo. When traveling, the smartphone is the radio. Even if the user listens to their hometown stations, this listening does not get picked up by the PPM device anyway save in extremely rare cases.
