Just wanted to say Goodbye

"IT WAS LETTING THEIR BOSSES KNOW HOW THEY WERE BEHAVING ON THIS BOARD."

That's real intelligent. Why don't you just call their mom while you're at it. Grow up!

No one is saying you can't prefer rock music to rap, hip-hop or urban. I'm a rock fan myself. The racial stereotypes that are perpetuated by some people on this board are the problem. Yes, UPN and the WB target minorities with some of their programming. They also target the suburbs and whites with some their programming. (Don't even try to tell me the Gilmore Girls was aimed at the hip-hop crowd!). They were both new networks trying to find a niche and decided that there were some holes in programming aimed at black people and that they could sell some advertising for those shows. Same with the urban radio stations in town. Since the demise of true Top 40 or CHR, pop stations have been forced to pick a rock-leaning or urban-leaning sound since the two don't seem to peacefully co-exist on one frequency anymore. Take a look at your R&R charts and count how many rock songs are there. Pretty tough to build a radio station around that, isn't it? The product's not there right now, if it was someone would play it. Most of the new rock that exists right now is terrible. There's a few new bands to get excited about, but not many. The good news is that this is a cyclical business and I'm confident that the next U2 or DMB is right around the corner. In the meantime, get out your old CD's and listen to something you haven't heard in a while and stop blaming everybody else that your favorite music is in a downspin right now.

Herb: now THAT was funny. See, us rockers can take a joke.

Dancer: I've seen you before, not sure if we went mano e mano. You have to admit the old dance vs. rock lost its luster. And, you have to admit how biased this place was under the old regime. In fact, one of the biggest opponents of rock music was given the keys to the Philly board on the other site. I think it would have been better if people just realise that different people have different opinions and everyone doesn't like the same music. Also, my tastes in music should not preclude me from voicing my opinions, which is what the dance/hip hop/rap fans tried in vain to do.

Hotline: Its a sad but true fact about posting on these boards, especially when you're in the biz. Back in the late 90's I was working as a Sunday announcer at a Philly station. On the boards, I went after this station in Sarasota, FL just as a radio insider. The fans were kvetching about the station not playing requests. So, I decided to "tear down the fourth wall" and expose the concept known as "playlists". Well, this turned into a pp contest (for lack of a better term that might or might not get bleeped) between the morning show hosts and myself to the point where they copied my posts and e-mailed them to MY ops manager, strictly with the intent of knocking off a guy in market 5 (a market where, on a good day, they'd never obtain). So, it happens. These people are insecure and want to keep radio as "theater of the mind", insofar as "yes, we do play requests and care about the community". To which I say BULL!

I have read this board, and just like in life you can see who is able to take a joke and who can't.

Funny though, the word I used, you know the one that is a product that Ritz makes, was edited. I think it is clear that you are not on the left, so you can take a joke and that you certainly would get it, not cry and whine, and by no means be offended. I can see editing something for the uptight, no humor, progressives, truthfully known as regressives, but for the rest of us there just isn't a need.

This I can call you are racist based on music taste is silly, but certainly not out of the norm for those of this mentality.

As for radio stations using playlists, of coarse, everything in radio is over-researched, and dissected to such a degree that any type of excitement or spontaneous, unpredictability is gone from the medium. It is more than just the music, but also the muzzle that is placed on the talent as well. My whole career has been with playlists, but cool pd’s who will allow a person they respect to professionally modify said playlist to the benefit of the station and its desire to super serve the target audience. With that said, we love this medium, and we should always think about the consequences of bad mouthing it to listeners and turning them off. We are in for a major fight with mobile internet radio around the corner, we should always keep that in mind. Every time you answer the phone at your station is a chance to make a positive connection with a listener. It just makes no sense to piss them off or turn them off, such an opportunity should always be positive, not negative.

Again with the generalities Herb. Progressives have no sense of humor and can't take a joke. (Yeah, conservatives are a real riot aren't they? That Ann Coulter, boy she really cracks me up!) Let's try to stop putting everybody into their little box of liberal or conservative, black, brown or white, rock lover or rap lover, and just deal with the issues. That's what bothers me most about this whole conversation. If someone doesn't agree with you, they must be some kind of pansy liberal. If someone doesn't like your kind of music, they must like that hip-hop crap and be one of 'them'. There's too much of this kind of stuff as a whole in this country, and you're not going to like this, but I think it lands squarely on the feet of Rush Limbaugh. I've been involved with radio a long time, and I'm embarassed to admit that I added Mr. Limbaugh's program to an AMer I worked at in the mid-80's. As far as I can remember, we used to be able to discuss politics in this country without the name-calling that I believe evolved out of the Limbaugh show and has spread like a California wildfire. Let's see if we can have a discussion and disagree with someone without the insults and name-calling. Now, I know that some might say that I've been political as well by bringing up Limbaugh's name, but I merely stated my opinion as to the origin of the problem. I didn't call him any names, or insult anyone who's been involved in the discussion. I merely gave my opinion.

So, what did you call me at the end of this post? http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,41677.msg283231.html#msg283231

Seems to me you can't take a jab, either.

What say you, Charlie?

You can't blame Limbaugh for where political discourse has gone in this country, he really just came along and gave it back as it was being dished. It has been the left that has labeled every conservative a racist for being against programs like AA, which is funny since judging people on race and giving them special benefits because of race is by definition racist. It is not the conservatives who look to censor views they disagree with by labeling them "hate speech". Conservatives want to engage in fair debate, but the frustration of being discriminated against for your views has put us on the defensive. No liberal can relate with the kind of discrimination and hate you receive for expressing conservative views at the universities in our country. It is not right to have liberal professors punishing conservatives who are out spoken by giving them low grades just for their politics. Our universities should be institutions that teach how to think, not what to think. Limbaugh surely is not the problem when you take an honest look at how the media and our education system attack any and all people who are conservative. It gets worse if you are a conservative minority, these poor people go through the worst discrimination and hate that this country has to offer. It is funny Joe, but I have been in thousands of debates with liberals, and you seem to be one of the most respectful to ever respond to me. I really can’t say you are a liberal since you didn’t attack me, re-write my words or call me names.

As for Ray, read my posts again, or better yet get someone with a fair mind to read them for you. You will never see me complain about the comments you make to me, I just want the chance to respond to you. I can here, which sucks for you, this is not some school where I can be threatened by faculty for not marching along to the preferred ideology. I'll take whatever it is you wish to dish, bring it on.

I agree everyone has a right to their own opinions. I just think having a signature with something sucking might be going overboard. Again that is my opinion. Now if you are talking about dance music loosing its luster from back in the day, well I dont think its the music, I think its more the people behind the scenes. PD's have become to wrapped up in research and forgot how to program. I think that goes with all formats. Lets take the safe way and do what the other guy is doing. Its the nature of the business and it sucks. Thats why I am enjoying running a non commercial station because of the freedom there is.

I am not backing hip hop because I think some of things they do as a genre are shady. But when someone says that the hip hop genre doesnt do something for charity unlessit benefits the people that make up their demographics(so I dont get censored), that upsets me. This board and the rest of the boards on this site used to be great. Then the personal attacks came. Can we get back to radio chat? We live in this big radio market, which has turned into a radio wasteland minus a few stations.

BOTTOM LINE

This whole thing would of never existed, if the crybaby orginator, who cannot take it, got all fluffed up when a few people on this board gave him what he has been giving them since this new board flew. He constantly made vicious attacks on their posts, then when they confronted him, he cried to the moderators, just like a little spoiled child, said, "I ain't playin' no more" and telling mommie and daddy. He is the one that should grow up!!!

This thread is so funny... I'm not a master of radio people, but it all comes down to demographics.... it's easy to pump up your 12+ ratings with POP format (pop no-a-days IS rap/r&b... deal with it)... and M18-34 / 25-54) is rock... so it seems in Philly as well as many markets the stations are looking for 12+ and high cume vs. Men.... that's it... it's not personal, it's just not... I really liked Y-100, and I was on the air at Q-102 when they were "peace on the streets"... so I like that music too... a few years ago my wife and I were complaining to each other that there was NO dance based stations in the market... now we can't find a rock station that doesn't suck... so you're all right... there has been no happy medium since the 80's (and maybe not even then)... reading this everyone is getting all flustered about nothing... the companies are simply doing what they think will make them money, or putting on stations to "buffer" their super star stations... it's a game of chess, so don't get so bent out of shape... especially with each other... ;)

Some people like you have to grow up.

The war of words on the computer. Anyone can sound tough online.

Since you insist to keep this tired post alive, let me inform you of the true facts. Radio Intern did write to these people and did tell them he wanted to meet them in person to discuss the problem they have with him, they never responded or had the B@ll$ to meet him. So you see pal, its those, who are tough online behind the computer screen, not RI, get your facts straight before you come on here spewing junk.

I hate threads that start, "Blah blah blah goodbye" Just go and spare us all the drama. This whole thread is a waste of bandwith.
