K-Earth 101 Totally 80's Labor Day Weekend

KRTH is featuring all 80's Labor Day Weekend.
I suppose they would have to play "Valley Girl" to make it a "Totally" 80's weekend.
Should be good and a nice improvement to last year's interactive "listener voted" top 500.

Here's the link:

Of course (I've mentioned this one before) but 30 years ago, KRTH featured the "Runner's Up of Classic Rock and Roll Weekend (#2's)" followed by the #1's for Labor Day Weekend, utilizing the local radio surveys for the song selections, like KHJ and KRTH.

Labor Day, an exciting time for KRTH radio history!

This morning, KRTH played two '80s songs that I hadn't heard them play before: Major Tom by Peter Schilling and Head To Toe by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. And Major Tom wasn't even a top-ten hit---it peaked at #14. For KRTH, playing such a song is pretty daring!

It may have been #14 nationally, but in some cities, it got more play than in the rural areas. Not sure exactly where it charted in LA at the time.

It's also one of those songs that has managed to live on despite its chart position. It was featured in Breaking Bad a couple years ago, lots of cover versions have been released, and Schilling himself has done numerous remixes to keep people aware of the song. And like a lot of the Euro-techno stuff, it sounds as good today as it did 30 years ago.

BigA, in 1983 we had HitRadio 93 KKHR. Jackson W. Armstrong (and the ever-ready-for-ya Gorilla) counted down the top 30 each Friday. Major Tom was #6 for two weeks in November 1983. Lionel Richie's All Night Long was number one then. During that second week, Midnight Star's Freak-A-Zoid, which stalled at #66 nationally (but reached #2 on the r&b chart), was #2. Golly gee! I bet we won't hear that one on KRTH!

Major Tom was played a lot on top 40 radio in 1983 in Southern California. Good song!

On HitRadio 93 KKHR, Major Tom spent two weeks at #3 in November 1983. Lionel Richie's All Night Long was number one then. I used to listen faithfully to the Friday afternoon countdown shows hosted by Jackson W. Armstrong and the ever-ready-for-ya Gorilla and I wrote the Top 30 lists in a notebook. I remember when Steve Perry of Journey had a big solo hit. Armstrong introduced Oh Sherrie and the Gorilla added, "I love ya 'cause your arms are long and hairy." :)

Is the party patrol they have roaming around LA, this weekend an old idea that KRTH, used to do? Or a new idea. Whos idea was it? Also most cities don't allow loud parties at private homes nowadays. Not the 80's anymore that's for sure .
Guess it will be a very mellow party wherever the "Party patrol" goes this weekend.

Also as a side note when did radio stations start doing live remote broadcast in Los Angeles? 1950's? And what radio station was the first to do it? Seeing how I'm on the subject of this weekends "party patrol" or live remote broadcast.

KFI was the first in the 1920s - regular remotes from the Coconut Grove at the old Ambassador Hotel, plus sports from the Rose Bowl and news live every evening from the studios of the old Los Angeles Herald-Express/Examiner.

All this was pre-1925. When Douglas aircraft did a round the world flight as a publicity stunt KFI broadcast live on its last leg coming into Santa Monica. Then came the fruit frost warnings with Floyd Young from Pomona. I believe there were pre-WW2 remotes from Hollywood Bowl as well.

Just heard the 80s Labor Day weekend promo. No CVD?

Or even better, WOGL has already started their #1 hits A to Z countdown from now thru the Labor Day Weekend, from 1960 to 1989. Even "Dominique" and "Disco Duck" were played. 1989's "Hangin' Tough" by New Kids on the Block playing now. Take a listen.....
