Has anyone heard Hollywood's show? I figured he'd have it all smoothed out by now! It still sounds like day one! KRTH gave away Money and Mustangs in the month of April, but it still didn't help! What will management do know?!? As for the same "6" songs.... give them some credit, I heard "7" songs!!!

Red Fox & the Dummy

Well the Winning is just Beginning on KEARTH 101! I've only heard Hollywood's first Day, 9 AM Hour, and would like to know how Fraiser Smith compaired to Hollywood? Why did he bomb too?

Fraiser was a bad attempt by K-Earth to place a comedian on the morning show. Had it been done right, maybe it would've worked, I don't know.... They left Jim Carson and Joni Caryl there with him and it just sounded bad... Fraiser wanted more control, management wanted Jim and Joni to have more control... Frasier had alot of low rate comedians on as guests...now you have a comedian interviewing a comedian.... that's like two tv news anchors interviewing each other...boring..... Hollywood just doesn't fit K-Earth.... period... it's sounds like he's recycling old shows and bits from the late 80's early 90's.... I haven't found anyone NOT in radio that listens to KRTH in the mornings anymore...
______________

KRTH still has really strong cume - always among the leaders - and over 1,000,000 people a week. However, they only have modest TSL - not a good sign for an Oldies station. I tend to think the music is more the issue than Hollywood. Whether or not Hollywood is a fit - that remains to be seen.

But he is a good talent...

Maybe KRTH is getting ready for a format flip? FM Talk...Spanish...Air America...or replay the golden age of radio drama and comedy. Probably not the comedy. As it stands now KRTH is nothing more than a bad joke!

It is such a shame that a once great oldies station became a boring station. Same type of disaster at CBS FM in New York, except I think they are hold in the 3's.
______________

I agree with you on one thing....I dont think Hollywood is the major issue with this station....the music sucks.....If they keep playing the same 101 songs over and over they will not get the ratings they once had....all the Mustangs, cash and other prizes are not going to lure people back to this horrible excuse for an oldies station if the music is not changed. Hollywood Hamilton was not a wise choice to lead a morning show for an oldies station. He is a good talent but not for Kearth. If Kearth would play music like 99.3 in San Diego they would find an audience once again. Is Jay Coffey still progamming the mess played on Kearth???

See, even in 2005, posters were complaining about KRTH. And it wasn't me! Obviously, before Jhani Kaye type programming issues.

Yes, but they were complaining at a time KRTH was falling apart in the ratings and a format change seemed inevitable. Shortly after this thread, later in 2005, Jhani was hired and his "issues" put KRTH back in the Top 10 and then the Top 5. Rick Thomas took it top 3 and Chris Ebbott has now taken it to number one.

I couldn't locate my copy of the Los Angeles Arbitron ratings for Spring of 2005 but I found the ratings for Spring of 2004. Here the stations that had at least a 2 share. The list shows the shares for Spring followed by the shares for Winter 2004-05. Cue the intro: "*Ba-bummmmmmm* Eleven years ago today!"

1. KPWR, 5.0 - 5.0
2. KLAX, 4.7 - 3.0
3. KFI, 4.5 - 3.9
4. KROQ, 4.4 - 4.1
5. KOST, 3.7 - 3.3
6. KBUA/KBUE, 3.5 - 2.9
7. KTWV, 3.3 - 3.8
8. KIIS, 3.2 - 3.6
9. KLVE, 3.1 - 3.6
10. KLSX, 3.0 - 2.5
11. KKBT, 3.0 - 3.1
11. KRTH, 3.0 - 3.1
13. KABC, 2.9 - 2.4
14. KKHT, 2.7 - 2.6
15. KZLA, 2.4 - 2.2
16. KRCD/KRCV, 2.4 - 2.3
17. KSSE, 2.3 - 2.2
18. KBIG, 2.2 - 2.0
19. KLOS, 2.1 - 2.4
20. KYSR, 2.1 - 2.1
21. KNX, 2.0 - 2.0

Note where KLAX is. El Cucuy (Renán Almendárez Coello) had left KSCA in March and took over the morning show at KLAX. In this book, KSCA ranked 23rd with a 1.9.

Oh, what a memory. Mr. Armendárez left KSCA a few moments after he called me and several other members of the programming team "ass kissers of the smelly old man" live on the air. Neither Mr. Perenchio nor the rest of us were particularly amused.

Taken as a whole, this tells us that most stations are doing a better job of understanding and delivering on their audience's expectations than they were doing 10 years ago.

The decliners: KFI, as Art notes, is actually rebounding after suffering audience losses similar to most conservative political talk stations recently. KPWR, which recently lost its morning show, is in a dogfight with KRRL. KROQ has been a victim of the decline in the Alternative format.

David would be the right person to explain KLAX and KBUA...and for that matter, what's happened in L.A. to create a situation where there is only one Spanish-language station in the top 10 today when there were three 10 years ago.

By the way, look at the variety in that Top 10. While some of those music stations share some songs, each has its own distinct format. Let's compare that with the "good old days":

Arbitron, 1985:

1. KIIS AM/FM (CHR): 9.8
2. KABC (Talk): 6.3
3. KJOI-FM (Beautiful): 4.1
3. KBIG-FM (Beautiful): 4.1
5. KLOS-FM (AOR): 3.6
6. KMET-FM (AOR): 3.3
6. KMPC (Standards): 3.3
8. KNX (News): 3.2
8. KFWB (News): 3.2
10.KROQ-FM (Modern Rock): 3.1

One CHR, two Beautifuls , two AORs, one Standards and one Modern Rock. Not to mention two all-newsers and a talk station.

Let's go back another decade:

Arbitron, 1975:

1. KABC (talk) 6.9
2. KHJ (top 40) 5.4
3. KJOI (beautiful) 5.3
4. KBIG (beautiful) 5.1
5. KDAY (r&b) 4.6
6. KMPC (AC) 4.4
7. KFWB (news) 4.1
8. KNX (news) 3.9
9. KFI (AC) 3.8
10.KLOS (aor) 3.5

A Top 40, two Beautifuls, an R&B , two ACs and an AOR. Plus the two all-newses and a talker.

Back as far as I can go:

Pulse, 1966:

1. KHJ (top 40) 9.0
1. KMPC (mor) 9.0
1. KLAC (talk) 9.0
4. KFI (mor) 7.0
4. KPOL (beautiful) 7.0
4. KRLA (top 40) 7.0
7. KABC (talk) 4.0
7. KFAC (classical) 4.0
7. KFWB (top 40) 4.0
7. KNX (mor) 4.0
7. XETRA (news) 4.0

Three Top 40s, all playing the same songs (give or take ten), three MORs, all playing the same songs (give or take ten), a beautiful, a classical, a talk station and an all-newser.

Diversity, variety and longevity are what I see when I look at the current Top 10 stations in L.A.

Au contraire, sir. KODJ's call letters changed to KCBS-FM on July 12, 1991, when they tweaked the oldies format and started calling it "CBS-FM". Those calls remained when they became "Arrow 93" two years later (September 1, 1983).

The confusion may have come since KCBS-FM became "Jack" on March 17, 2005, while the Spring book was in progress. If you'll look again at that R&R page, you'll see they were #12 with a 3.0 rating, up from a 1.7 their last book as Arrow.
