K-Hits vs. The Beat, Spirit vs. KXOJ

Did 102.3 really run a promo bragging about being the #1 Christian station? Isn't that kind of out of character on a religous Station? I find it hard to believe that a Church audience would really appreciate such an obvious case of boasting. I would think that a tactic like that would actually backfire with a religious audience.

I heard at least two that mentioned being #1 in Arbitron. I heard the KXOJ one but it was more of the "Mix" style generic "we're your favorite" type deal.

Journalguy I am sorry you do not like me bringing up KXOJ again
Bob Thornton again?
but I thought that is what this thread was about?? I have met Bob (just briefly) and he was very kind, but if you do not like the station why not direct your concerns to David Stephens, the owner, rather than the Promotions Director? I have dealt with David many times and even though he is a tough negotiator, he has always been honest and upfront with me, and my account rep over there has been there forever, so it cannot be too bad of a place to work. ???

You're all missing my point anyway, in that it seems KXOJ is winning the revenue battle despite any ratings KKCM is getting. It's sort of like when Kick 99 was on and they had good numbers, but ultimately could not get the revenue to follow.

Our agency deals primarily with faith-based accounts (churches, Christian concerts, videos, bookstores, etc) and we very much look at what a station can do with their DJ's. We know that a DJ talking up or giving away a product is much more valuable than a standard spot, and when ratings are similar we will go with the better contest execution every time. Again KBEZ and KXOJ are very good (all live 6a-7p) at this to name a couple.

By the way hats off to KVOO today. They were at a car dealer on Memorial when I passed by about 1pm and it appeared they had drawn a huge crowd. Stations that can pull big remotes off are at a premium these days.

I'll go back to just reading now. I do not want to butt-in where I do not belong. Maybe I should go start an ad-buyers board! ;D

have sat through many a sales presentation from both. KXOJ is heavily researched using Troy Research

Not your fault "you are not in radio" but, I would hardly consider Troy researcy heavy research. It is just internet based music testing. When KXOJ starts doing focus groups, perceptual market studies and auditorium research then I would say they are spending some bucks...

By the way, I thought Thornton was totally against research. He must have changed his tune since some Spirit came to town.

Jackd and Gary! How dare you go work for a company that treats you well. I bet they even force you to accept their nice benefit package.

I cannot believe that anyone would leave a Tulsa station that treated people so special. :)

Did it take time to accept being treated like a human? Sounds like Mr.KXOJ aka Bob T. is a bit jealous of your new jobs.

As for a free lunch, why not. Never hurts to network. Didn't realize that KXOJ management has banned their employees from talking with other radio people.

I hate to disappoint but I learned more at KXOJ/The Kross then I have during my entire career. I also wish I had a benifits package like Cox! I left to be a PD at a smaller, non-com Christian CHR station in the big state of Iowa. If it wasn't for working under Bob I wouldn't be the Programmer I am now. On a side note, when I had lunch with Cox people I didn't have to pay! ;D Got one up on ya, Junior! ;)

For years, they've usually gone all Christmas for 24 hours the day after thanksgiving.

They've called it "Christmas Preview." They take the shopping day and facilitate the mood with the music. It's also a way to preview some of the new CCM Christmas music that comes out each year.

That may be what you're hearing. Odds are, they'll go back to regular format at midnight. Looking at the KBEZ website, it looks like they've gone all Christmas. Is this right?

If this is the case, then my guess is that KXOJ won't keep it that way.
