Well how about 103.1?

93.3 is a bad choice for a LPFM Station

Not sure how much better that would be considering KKCY is on 103.1 on top the Sutter Buttes (albiet, not a ton of power but still).

The FM band in Sacramento is truly an interesting one. With the thermal inversion layer in the summer, close proximity to San Francisco FM's (Mt. Beacon) and then you have signals in the North Valley with very little to block all these signals; it's an uphill battle.

Thanks, you make good points. It is true about the lack of co-channel interference and IBOC issues. The co-channel issue is one of the reasons it changed frequencies from 97.7 to 97.5, IIRC. It doesn't explain its strong signal from West Sac to Cameron Park and Elk Grove to Roseville with very little signal fade. It just doesn't make sense with the listed ERP, HAAT, and tower location. I guess it is possible, but I'm somewhat suspicious. Perhaps if I have time one day, I could quit gabbing and use my field strength meter to satisfy my own curiousity.

Thanks Big D for the input. I'm new here, but I've read many of your comments which are always insightful and well-reasoned .

Thank you, and welcome to the boards!

I was at Arden today, Well close to it,, I listened to my Grundig in some parts 93.3 was splattering over 93.1, By not much

There's nothing open on the FM bands, Des KCFA 106.1 in Arnold is it suppose to cover Sacramento?

No KFCA is not suppose to cover Sacramento. Some have wondered/questioned whether they're running legal power but I'm not sure anyone has actually proved that. KMEL also has a boaster on Mt. Diablo that could cause some trouble on the western side of the valley.

I keep forgetting to check, but this morning I fired up the stereo to 93.3 and there it was - The Who - loud & clear in Grass Valley with a rooftop FM antenna. Surprisingly little, if any, interference from 93.3 in San Francisco. No good in the car, however, thanks to HD interference from KFBK.

Well I got to listen to it while I was out

In some parts of Downtown, Most of the time KZHP splatter over KFBK ..But mosty KFBK spatter over KZHP

Is it possible to move to 106.1? Even know KCFA is there, But not surpose to cover Sacramento..But still have to protect KMEL at the same time

Yes, it's too bad 93.3 doesn't have a better signal. I can listen to it online, but there is nostalgia listening to it on the radio. I remember being in the KZAP studios around 1979 or 1980 and watching the vinyl spin on the Sparta turntables. Loving the new station!

If you're interested, here are the type of Sparta tables KZAP used (minus the spindle weight) at that time.

Just checking on that

It's funny, I was at the KMEL's Wiki about there signel covrage ...Can be heard far East to Elk Grove, It's kinda hard when KCFA sound like a local

What's makes it so stronge in the Sacramento with only 3,800 watts

Is it cuz of this

Height above Avg. Terrain* 257 meters (843 feet)
Height above Ground Level* 52 meters (171 feet)
Height above Sea Level* 2042 meters (6699 feet)
Antenna Pattern* Non-Directional

And that's why a few question whether they're running "legal power". While I have no evidence to support my statement, the stations real world coverage is more in line with a Class B station rather than a B1 (which it's licensed for). On top of that, it's co-channel (KMEL) has a booster on Mt. Diablo only adding to noise floor of the signal itself.

IIRC, this operator was busted several years ago by FCC SF office for exceeding their licensed power. This may have stemmed from a KMEL interference complaint. You can dig up the report on the FCC website.

it doesn't seem like there's a frequency for KZAP to occupy other than 93.3.

Nothing really great for sure. But either 105.9 or 95.1 should become available, depending on whether EMF actually builds their super-translator downtown. Right now K290AI is licensed to 105.9. But they have a CP to move it to 95.1 at 250 watts as a fill-in. Eventually one of those should become available. 100.1 also seems like it might work, but there is another translator CP on that frequency licensed to "Walltown" with a transmitter at the KTKZ AM site out by Sloughouse. I have my doubts as to whether it will ever come on the air tho, so if I was KZAP I'd be looking there.

I'd love to see EMF lease space on KCAI HD-2 and then light up a super translator for KZAP. Sure, this is totally outside of their normal operations however a new revenue stream to support their ministry.

The super translator could be at 95.1 in downtown. Just a thought.
