KABC Format Change

1 - competing with KLAA, KLAC, KSPN and (to a lesser extent) KFWB.
2 - (assuming the oldies are 1950s-60s) competing with nobody.
3 - competing with KBRT, KKLA and (to a lesser extent) KFSH.

Give me some time to think about this. (Which will also give Michael and David time to show me statistics that a sports format would give KABC more of the highly-coveteed "young male" demos than the other two formats. Oh yeah, I have those two guys all figured out. ;) )

Do you know for a fact that people start rumors on this board or is that just something that you heard as a rumor? :D

This, based on the fact that the KLOS MD was shown the door today ???

It depends on how much 9-volt battery power I still have remaining in my transistor radio from 1967.

Ooooo, Perry Mason is on.
See ya.

What "highly-coveted 'young male' demo" dost thou speak of? I'm 32 (and single) - am I in the "right" age bracket? However, I maybe have all of several hundred bucks to my name and very limited income (courtesy a disability that I'm not going into on here), so would that take me out of their "market" since I don't make 13+ figures an hour? :p :D
BTW when listening to a few baseball games (Giants, Angels, Padres, Dodgers) recently, or Dave Ramsey (on KXNT) or a couple midday weekend talk shows on KFI, I've observed quite a few ads for getting out of deep debt, curing ED (back to back with an abstinence ad targetting teens - go figure!), combatting hair loss, etc - mostly things that I would not be in the market for. (At least not yet - I will say that I think I have more gray hair now (runs in family) than my foster grandpa (my mom lived with him & his wife for 12 years) had when he died at 89 a few years ago.)
When not listening to the specific above shows or DXing, I probably have recently been listening to Family Radio (except when Harold C comes on, unless he's doing the Bible reading program) and Radio Disney the most. I'd add 40s-60s oldies (my favorites being the somewhat slow triplet-based (or maybe it's 12/8 time for those with music knowledge) songs, an example being Dean Martin's "In The Chapel In The Moonlight" - what's that style called?), but the only stations I know of that I have heard with that format, now that KYAA is Catholic, are skywaves on graveyard channels.
So what demo, if not based on my age and gender, would someone like me be in? :)

The talk of the demise of KABC has been going on well over a decade now and yet nothing happens. They continue to linger at the bottom of the ratings and yet no one in management or ownership seems to have cared. They bring back the one track Larry Elder who never had any ratings, they tried and failed with the equally idiotic Geraldo, they bring back John Phillips for God knows why. Weekends are a complete waste.

Talk about a station that has completely given up.

As soon as you mentioned that you have no real disposable income, you removed yourself from all demos. They just don't care. As long as you enjoy the programming you seek out, who cares? Don't let "them" define you. Define yourself.

I do have disposable income, but they don't care about me for different reasons.

I could see CBS sports radio working on KABC though i'm sure there may be a call letter change.
I know they wouldn't do it but how about an actual LIVE morning and afternoon drive show with Rome on in the middays.
I know people say LA is not a sports radio market but if you put on a show in the morning that mixes Hot talk, rock radio & sports type shows then you'll get both casual and hardcore sports fans.
a duo with a strong producer who can do some in show production of bits would work well and I think LA sports fans would gravitate to a local morning and strong afternoon drive show instead of everything being piped in nationally.

Here is what local sports talk looks like: Lakers, Lakers, Lakers, Lakers, Dodgers, Lakers, Lakers, Lakers, USC, Lakers Lakers, Lakers, Clippers, Lakers, Lakers, Lakers, UCLA, Lakers, Lakers, Lakers, Angels, Lakers, Lakers, Lakers...

That could go either way. There's no advantage to the KABC calls and no tie to the ABC network. On the other hand, if they brand the station with a name and use call letters once an hour for a legal ID, it really doesn't matter if those call letters stay.

One of you is correct. As far as the rumor mill...let's say I have very reliable insider info. ;D

Well, given that rumors of a format change have been going around on this board for close to a year and have included sports, religion and Asian-language programming, that's not a huge surprise. Has your reliable insider given you a timetable?

Wouldn't Disney have something to say about that? I thought Cumulus was paying The Mickey Mouse Outfit for the right to use the KABC (and WABC, WLS, and the other ex-ABC O&O stations they own) call letters. Besides, if KABC switched to CBS Sports Radio, call letters would be pretty much irrelevant anyway other than once-an-hour the legal ID.

Part one: Disney would only have something to say if Cumulus was breaching their contract. If Cumulus has an out or the agreement is coming to a renewal point, Disney would have nothing to say about it. As for part two, see the (now) boldface type in my post that you quoted.
