Kaiser & Wellstar Spots Back-to-Back on Star

On Monday in midday on Star 94, I heard a Kaiser Permanente spot and a Wellstar spot back to back.

I realize Kaiser and Wellstar are not exactly the same type of business. Kaiser is an HMO, and Wellstar is a chain of medical facilities. But they're kind of close. You can go to both Kaiser and Wellstar for medical needs.

I don't mean to pick on Star; it just happened to be the station I heard this on. I'm guessing it happens elsewhere.

But do stations not care about their clients? Or do we now have inexperienced traffic people who don't think of this type of conflict? If I were either Kaiser or Wellstar, I'd be hollering for a makegood.

I don't think anyone asks for exclusivity anymore...at least on TV, it isn't uncommon to see local car dealers in the same stopset during local news.
Now, if a network spot runs and there's a local break behind it, you might well see competing advertisers, or at times the same spot repeated if it's part of a national and local flight at the same time.

I remember back in the 90s at a station I worked in traffic at we tried never to have a conflict (like two auto dealers) in the same stopset, let alone back to back.

It's OK, after healthcare reform, Star will be doing remotes from Kaiser & Wellstar ... lol.

Music formats with only two stop sets an hour make it nearly impossible to guarantee separation. And if you're the 5th unit out of 6 forget having impact.
Only the clients that make it clear upfront that they won't pay/require make-goods when running next to a competitor or call when they hear it get satisfaction.
Imagine paying for an endorsement and hearing another one by the same personality next in the stop set!

Mark today as the official day this board ran out of things to talk about.

Tomorrow we will talk about, coffee. What does your on-air staff prefer, caf or decaf? Or do you even give them a choice. Do you find the crazy morning zoo crew uses more sugar than other shifts or do they prefer the soothing taste of Cremora?

Oh my this is turning into SNL parodying NPR:

Isn't "Kaiser & Wellstar" the morning duo at Clear Channel's Lite AC in Modesto, California?

and soon to be regurgitated on every CC Lite AC in the world.

Actually "Kaiser & Wellstar" could have been the next thing in radio, naming air personalities to tie into product placement. So in Atlanta a morning duo named "Kaiser & Wellstar" would serve as a constant subliminal reminder to pick Kaiser as your HMO and Wellstar as your hospital.

Be careful. You might be giving CC an idea. After all, couldn't Kaiser & Wellstar work in the Hardy Automotive Group studio?

But I like your thinking, Caller 10. Middays could be Wendy & McDonald; the afternoon top-10 countdown could be Butler with the Big 10. I see a place for Uriah in afternoon drive. The possibilities are endless. This could end CC's money problems.

Great idea for personalities for a "more music, less talk" morning show when CC flips 94.9 (back) to soft AC from the current Bulls---.

But who's going to pick up Atlanta's all-time favorite duo, Shane & Geller?

This is nothing that new. Watch any nightly network TV news show. The spots are usually one kind of prescription drug after another after another, with a vitamin spot tossed in for fun. Oh and a spot for the antacid of the moment.

I no longer watch TV news. I find that to be a very effective antacid. And free!

Anyway, sometimes accidents happen too. I recall an evening back in the 80s at WXIA during the 6:00 news when a car dealer spot, a Home Depot spot, and a mattress company spot all ran back-to-back using the same filler music. Ooops. Always wondered if that music sold more cars, bags of concrete, or beds that night or just put people to sleep by itself.

Around 1981 when I lived in New York, there was a cheap steak chain called Beefsteak Charlie's. They ran TV commercials, in which a barbershop quartet sang, "You're gonna get spoiled at Beefsteak Charlie's tonight."

I was watching Saturday Night Live on channel 4 in NY, and they did a spoof commercial about Beefsteak Charlie's. Only they called it "Pre-Chewed Charlie's." It was a restaurant for people with dentures. The restaurant would chew up your steak and then serve it. The spoof commercial ended with the barbershop quartet singing, "You're gonna get spoiled at Pre-Chewed Charlie's tonight."

Immediately after the spoof, NBC went to a local break. The first spot in the break? You guessed it.
