KARN

Say what you want about Jim Beard, but having worked for him he was hands down the best GM I have ever worked for. Radio is full of tightwads, and while Jim watched the books very closely I never had a need go unmet in my department. On top of that, he always treated me with respect and even when we disagreed on things, he never hit below the belt... something I can't say about other GM's I've worked for.

I know that down the line he's pissed some people off, but for my $.02 worth he's a great guy. Pissing people off is part of being the boss. If you want to know the real problem with Cit-LR I could probably tell you, but you really dont' want to hear it. Suffice it to say, it most certainly isn't Jim Beard.

You want a real a-hole... go work for the GM at Big River Broadcasting in Florence/MS AL. Small market radio at it's worst... you come out of that group and you'd be kissing Jim's rear-quarters for a job. And they were the good guys in town.

As for Willingham... has anyone ASKED why he's in the "traffic center" instead of being on the road. We've just assumed that he's there because they don't want to pay gas money? C'mon guys...

LR was not growing much in revenue when i was there, but they were not losing money... just not making as much as they should have, or even could have. That has more to do with the revolving door of sales people than anything else.

A little arrogant, are we?

Well, you DO sound like a couple of bitter Ex-Citadel employees...however, I think you are both right. Doing radio just good enough to make money is what's killing the business. Do good radio first and ratings and revenue will follow...and it's more sustainable...that is if you care about anything other than short term bottom line, which the big corporations don't.

Ya know, back when I wore rose-colored radio glasses, I thought that was true. But it's just not. At least not in a lot of small un-rated areas in Arkansas. I've heard some of the most God-awful programmed stations that were raking in $2 spots "with all your fill-in-the-blank needs" hand over fist. And, these were from owners who know good radio, or at least proclaim to, but just can't seem gut it up and put it out there. They'd MUCH rather prostitute their product for the quick sale. "Why do we need listeners when we've got advertisers?" is their credo, and the funny thing is, most of their listeners and advertisers (and employees)either don't know or don't care how bad the product is.

I've found that you can do both...have a good product in a small market, AND make money. But it's a hard sell to those in (sales) management who don't have any confidence in their product to begin with.

OK! You're right! I shouldn't jump to conclusions on this. But I did hear Mike make a comment many months ago, when the subject came up on-the-air, that he preferred to be 'on the road' rather than stuck in a studio with the 'suits' walking around. If it's not the gas but a programming decision, it was a bad one. Every other station in town, other than Citadel, has traffic from someone at a 'traffic center'. Mike set KARN apart from the others. I preferred Mike's traffice report over all others.

Now that I will confirm.. Mike does much better out on his own. Some people in the building prefer it too :D

I liked Mike, and I think Mike liked me, but he could be pretty grouchy.
