You know everybody is always "downing" or "ridiculing" him constantly.
I worked for the man for six (6) years! He taught me a lot about radio, including sports play-by-play, and other things as well.
I have been able to take those lessons and become successful in my own right. Working in Little Rock, Kansas City and other smaller markets around the country. I have also worked for three (3) network radio groups as well.
Mostly, from what I learned from Mike Harrison.
Mike was lucky to get 92.7FM on the air back in 1984. FM frequencies were starting to dry up around Little Rock. When Mike bought KVEE (AM) 1330 in Conway for $250,000; I thought that was expensive for that time. The FM was already sold off from the AM. That FM became KMJX (FM) 105.1 (a.k.a. Magic 105).
YES... Mike has done various formats from Country, Adult Contemporary, All Sports and possibly others; but, he hasn't wavered from one thing... bringing local radio to Conway and Faulkner County.
Yeah... us radio bloggers on this site would love to have a crack at the new 25,000 watt signal he has now; wider coverage... but, still concentrating on Conway and Faulkner County.
In my opinion, Mike made a good choice in ending the "All Sports" format and going with Oldies. KCNY 107.1 FM will be good competition for Mike locally; but, since KCNY is doing Country; this is why Mike chose to do Oldies. I think Mike would have preferred to do Country; but, this is the path of least resistance.
So, give the man credit for something. He hasn't sold out to the Clear Channels and Citadels in the world. But, is trying to keep the localism alive in Conway and Faulkner County.
