Katie

She was supposed to replace Oprah. But Oprah is still working (e.g. Lance Armstrong interview). If Oprah is still filling that role and Katie can't get
the big interviews which is critical for her show, it wont be good.

I'd think ABC might consider Robin Roberts or Sofia Vergara for a talk show in a couple or three years or so. Wait maybe until Oprah really retires. Katie will definitely make it one more season though I wonder if she might get weaker clearances.

I'd be curious to see if CBS owned stations airs Queen Latifah in the afternoon. All the CBS owned stations have committed clearances and originally I suspected a 9am clearance.

Right now many air Dr.Phil in the afternoon, and WCBS airs Dr. Phil and Judge Judy.

However it could move Dr. Phil to mornings as well as keeping it on prime time on sister WLNY, while dedicating Latifah to afternoon at 3pm.

Her show could be like Oprah and Ellen, serious and light, adding more direct competition against ABC's Katie.

She's not doing well because she's on @ 3pm
If Katie had started her talk show in 2011, she probably could have inherited Oprah's old time slots in most markets. As it is, most markets filled Oprah's old time slot with an extra hour of news. That is what they did here in Nashville. And yes, Katie is on at 3:00 p.m. here, too.

But I would say that the jury is still out on how well she is doing.

Katie is on at 4pm in DC. However, WJLA experimented with Anderson at 4p the year after Oprah left and there was a big dive in ratings with that. I'd be curious to know if there was ratings recovery at WJLA, and if the station is pleased with Katie at 4p or will be looking to move her to 3p (Anderson's current slot) for something else at 4p next year, maybe the Latifah show or another show.

The ABC O&Os have pressure to wait her out, but WJLA/Allbritton might not. WJLA wasn't compelled to a 4pm news, since it operates a cable newschannel (NewsChannel 8 ) and probably didn't want to be news heavy in programming on the primary station.

Here in Boston, Ellen took Oprah's old time slot (she had been on at 9am before that), and Katie airs right before Ellen. However, I do agree that Katie is more like Oprah than Ellen is.

The reason Lance Armstrong probably went on Oprah is because Oprah was willing to conduct the interview exactly as he wished, with no opinions offered by third parties. If he had done, say, "60 Minutes," they would have sent Morley Safer to interview some European cyclist who finished behind Armstrong in the 2003 Tour de France for some much-needed balance.

As it was, if someone watched only the three hour Oprah interview and no other press coverage, Armstrong came out smelling like a rose precisely because there was no third-party involvement.

USA Today reported that while 3.2 million viewers watched Armstrong with Oprah, that was less than the 5.1 million people who watched cancelled Fox TV show Mob Doctor. I know it's not necessarily a great comparison, because a regular TV costs a lot more to produce, still an interesting fact.

It Hartford/New Haven Katie is on at 3PM on WTNH/8 as a lead-in to Judge Judy at 4PM and then the news at 5PM. Of the other big 4 stations she's up against local talk show Better Connecticut on CBS affiliate WFSB/3, Steve Harvey on NBC O&O WVIT/30, and People Court on Tribune's FOX 61. When General Hospital used to air at 3PM Better Connecticut on Channel 3 would often tie or beat GH in the ratings.

In Springfield, Mass she's on at 4PM on WGGB/40 against The News/Inside Edition on CBS 3 WSHM-LD, Judge Judy on NBC WWLP/22, and America's Funniest Videos on FOX 6, which is WGGB 40.2 WGGB also airs Katie at 10AM. The 10AM is a repeat of the previous day's 4PM episode.

In Chicago, I can't see Katie doing as well in the 3pm timeslot. WLS-TV was forced by corporate to put Katie in the 3pm timeslot, which disrupted their successful 3pm & 3:30pm timeslots with Inside Edition & Jeopardy, leading into the 4pm news. Now, I'm not sure they're getting the same ratings leading into the 4pm news. WLS-TV has also put repeats of her show at 1am (a timeslot they used to repeat the 10pm news). I'm hoping by the time Katie does get cancelled, that WLS-TV can move Inside Edition & Jeopardy back into the 3 & 3:30pm timeslots, where it has been successful for more than 20 years. I believe if WLS-TV hadn't started up Windy City Live (local talk show), & been given the choice on timeslot, they might have put Katie on at 9am (Oprah's former timeslot). IN my opinion, Katie is no Oprah in the talk show arena.

While this might be started in another thread, great 'get' for Couric: the first televised interview with Notre Dame football player Manti Te'o and his parents. Plus she'll get major face time on ABC News and even ESPN.

I wonder if Oprah never had that chat with Lance Armstrong, would Katie have tried really hard to secure that Te'o interview...

Re Hartford/New Haven, let me backtrack a little. I know that
WFSB kept "Guiding Light" at 3 (although I think it's running "Let's
Make A Deal" at 10 AM) against "General Hospital" on WTNH. I'm
curious as to who usually won that matchup. "GL" must not have
done that badly for Ch. 3, considering that the CBS stations in
New York and Boston had moved it to 10 AM.

Here in Raleigh/Durham Katie is on WTVD (ABC o&o) at 3, and Oprah's
old 4 PM timeslot has been replaced by local news. But I think WRAL
(CBS) has the better of it; they have "Let's Make A Deal" at 3, followed
by "Y&R" at 4. I think Louisville has an almost-identical situation ("Deal"
airs there at 10 AM, however), but WLKY has dominated Louisville daytime
since it became a CBS affiliate in 1990. Katie is on WHAS (ABC) at 3 as
lead-in to its 4 PM news, which replaced Oprah and goes up against--guess
what?--"Y&R."

And I could see Robin Roberts (if and when she recovers her health) as a
possible replacement for Katie; her personality and Oprah's remind me of
each other, although I think Oprah might be a little more sympathetic toward
her guests.

We'll never know about the 'Oprah influence', but Couric's snagging of an interview with Te'o might be the bigger draw. Fresher, crazier story that's still being bantered about amongst ESPN and Entertainment Tonight--and Katie's show isn't off in a digital cable tier.

T.O. and Mantei Te'o are two different people. Only one of them had a fake girlfriend.
