KBAY Flips to Country

In the SEO world, they talk about getting your name at the top of search engines. So I just did a casual search on "Bay Country." The #1 site in the search engine was Bay Country Financial. They have a better logo than this radio station. My favorite was Bay Country Crabbing, that had a huge crab in their logo. But as I clicked on all of the sites, NONE of them used the big multicolor B as their logo. I really don't have a problem with the station branding itself Bay Country. It's the visual logo that's useless.

And I agree that not including the frequency is the biggest mistake in both branding and logo.

It looks like the station has no fanfare, nobody is really following on social media. Only 38 likes on Facebook, only 18 followers on Twitter.

Kind of reminds me of the effort 95.7 made with the Bear. They started with, country isn’t for everyone. But, we’re being you the best country. It was like they were almost apologizing for bringing country back to the Bay Area. I thought their approach was sad and this is coming from someone that doesn’t like country at all except for the crossovers in the 70s.

The Wolf was probably better than the Bear, but neither were popular.

Which is why they will never be as successful as KRTY.
Actually, the can easily be much more successful than KRTY. First, they cover a larger portion of the San Francisco market than KRTY. Second, there were fewer and fewer radio buys of just San Jose in the last decade. Now they can sell as a true San Francisco station. Third, they are part of a cluster and can do combined selling, something KRTY could not do.

We'll see. So what happened with The Wolf, and The Bear?

I agree with the prediction that KBAY will be less successful than KRTY.

I'm reserving all opinions until after KRTY goes away. If KBAY doesn't hire anyone from KRTY, you may be right.

But I was impressed reading that interview with the Alpha execs. They seem to know radio and the market pretty well.

Another local host hired for KBAY:

Alpha Media hires 10-year radio vet Isaac "Brooks" Wenzel as Assistant Program Director-Country for KBAY-KKDV (Bay Country)/San Jose. He'll also become the station's first local afternoon personality. Beginning Monday, June 20, Brooks will be hosting 2-6pm weekdays on Bay Country and follows recently named local midday personality Emily Harlan from 10am-2pm.

While I'm happy to see KBAY is hiring local hosts, the fact no KRTY personalities have been hired is disappointing to me.

I share your skepticism. Very few vintage FM stations have been able to successfully transition to online only with a full airstaff.
