MY in San Diego was a failure until STAR flipped to JACK...then they had to change the brand to STAR to make it a success.

Should have flipped to BIG Country 1043 and put GO and KFROG out of business. I have programmed AC for 10 years there just aint enough of the pie in this town for this many AC stations.
Most of Star in San Diego numbers are because of Jeff and Jer moving from Jack San Diego not because of the identity change to Star from My. Get your facts in order.

We have one country station. We can't support two. What does KFROG have to do with Los Angeles? It isn't an L.A. radio station.

Clear Channel made a great move with 104.3 My FM. Now, no station can come in and do the Fresh format (such as Emmis' DEAD Movin 93.9). Clear Channel L.A. keeps its lock on women from 12-64 (soon 6-64). They've clearned up a format that was in dire need of a revamp. It will be a great success during the new year when the PPM is introduced and will be an instant hit with advertisers.
This is a stupid move, this sounds both like star and kost together

Groove didn't survive because there isn't a large enough audience to support a dance music format.

There isn't one dance music station in the United States, the very few there are, that is doing anything in ratings or revenue.

It sounds like what a contemporary hits station for adults should sound like. The music is right on. The imaging is quick and to the point. Not the amateur mess that Movin sounds like.

Nate it's not a stupid move, b/c as you said it sounds like both star and kost together. That's exactly how the station's executives and management have been describing it all day as well.
As for Star, we'll have to wait and see what changes are in store for that station.

Energy 92.7 San Francisco is actually number 1 with males 25-54 in the city of San Francisco, and its revenues are good for the kind of signal we're talking about here.

In general though most of the successful Dance stations are found outside of the U.S.

I'm glad to hear a format with adult hit music (true hits) that doesn't have imaging that constantly distracts. It's the perfect "mall" or "business" station. It will be a winner in the PPM and advertisers.

Tell me the last "innovative" format that STARTED in Los Angeles that was a winner? KROQ from the 1970's? The only other formats I can think of are KNX-FM and The Wave but I'm not sure if Los Angeles was the first "Wave".

I think nvrbbh is Glenn's new handle - the acronym reads like "Never Been Banned Here".
Glenn tends to approve of CC's moves more than any other cluster, but he has also panned their moves in the past.
While he may be right that MY will resonate with PPM when it launches next year, the station is abysmal as far as innovation and compelling go.
I think MY's launch ahead of 98.7's pending flip is designed to port over some of Star's core playlist so that it survives in this market. My guess is that 98.7 will become a more Rock/AAA hybrid, ala Sophie in San Diego - which WILL be a value add for this market's radio choices.

I do however think this liner is funny and ironic given KBIG's departure - "MY radio station is BIGGER than your radio station". I also hope the KBIG calls survive.

And what was the LAST station INNOVATION that started in Los Angeles that worked elsewhere (for English language stations)? KROQ or KNX-FM from the 70's? The Wave or the original Power 106 in the 80s? I can't think of anything that was a success that has come since Wall Street took over radio.

Sorry, radio in Los Angeles isn't a place where you innovate anymore. Too much at stake. After Emmis put on Movin', anyone should know your better be provin' it will be a hit before you put it on here. One Seattle station wasn't enough to qualify as a hit format.

My ain't great as an innovation but it is comfortable to listen to unlike something like Movin or the old KBIG. The right move for the PPM and to kept out all others as competitors in the AC arena in L.A..

Actually, the station I think that has the most potential in the market is Latino 96.3. It just needs to be focused a little better. It needs some tightening. Got to shut up some of the lightweight jocks there (afternoon guy is kool but the midday chick really needs liner cards). But the top 40 formatics are right on. The PD needs to pay more attention to all the mixing, too. So much of it is in MONO. A huge pet peeve of mine.

Nobody has mentioned Radio One today. Killer ratings at the V100! So much for what the CFO said earlier this year. Sell it and get out of this market just as Emmis should.

Not actually a format change huh?
Just a repositioning.

And how does My and Star exsist under the same roof?

I really believe Star will change next...

My main question is with or without DJs? Without them, they may be heading too close to Jack?
My sounds nothing like Jack. They share very little in the way of music.

No, I meant if Star is flipped to a male demo rock format.

I agree that this is a much better sounding and focused radio station than KBIG, which was dysfunctional beyond belief.

Between Delilah, 'Thump Radio', 'Boogie Nights', 'Casey's Top 20' and 'Backtrax 80's w/Kid Kelly', KBIG was a sloppy mess.

This station is indeed a blend of KOST & Star; once they add their air personalities, we'll get a much better handle on it.

Flipping to country was out of the question, especially considering CC's disastrous country launch in San Diego.

LA cannot support two country stations given the change in the ethinicity mix over the past decade here, and KKGO's projected billing numbers for 2007 would not be sufficient for the CC beancounters, much as KZLA's for last year were to Emmis.

Well, so much for personality radio! By the way, CBS FM tied for second in the Trends. Evidently, entertaining DJs are much prefered over tired liners.

We New Yorkers, at least those of us who appreciate creative personality driven radio, like to call WWFS "The Stale." Listening to "Fresh" is like dining on cardboard. ;)

KTWV was launched in 1987, and Pirate Radio came along in 1989; I'm not sure what year 'Arrow 93' was launched.

But there's too much $$$$$ at stake to use the LA airwaves as a laboratory for launching a format that hasn't been proven elsewhere.

My104.3FM is a very nice compliment to KOST & KYSR, even if KYSR is moved to the left musically, which wouldn't surprise me.

There are a few variations on how to do an Adult Top 40 (or Hot AC) format these days; My104.3 FM certainly sounds like one so far.

Is there a person on earth who gets excited by the whole "MY" thing?

"Wow, this RADIO STATION is cool. It's just like MYSPACE!"

Um.......no.

Just because MYSPACE is (actually, WAS....it's become passe) a popular website, does not mean slapping a "my" in front of your product means a hill of beans to anyone, anywhere. (Are you listening, MYKEARTH101.COM?)

This format "change?" ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
