Dude where have you been hiding? If they do flip to any kind of rock station they need to take in consideration that AGM did the Real Rock format a few years back and flipped it after it failed..... Will Bakersfield support a third rock station if that was they plan on doing? Did CC do a non-compete for any format that they have in their cluster? If not then CC isnt as bright as they seem. I know this is CA and some non-competes dont real stick but its a legal document and a scare tactic. Just my two cents. Although the robot is cool.... ::) ;D

Real Rock...had some issues. They had a frequency change and really the music was not that good. I know I could program a rock station that would get good ratings in this market. It really is more then the music too...you have to be in touch with your market. A smart promotion team is just as important as good music.

Stopping myself before I go off on a big tangent but if you want to know how to run promotions in Bakersfield and win...loook back to the early 90s when Gina Davis was promotions director at KKXX...

We have 4 rock stations... well kinda.
1: 106.1 KRAB radio (KRAB)
2: 98.5 the Fox (KDFO)
3: 93.1 Pirate Radio (KKXX)
and now the noob to the list
4: 96.5 MAX FM (KBKO, (soon to be KVMX))

I do not really think of pirate as a rock station...per say. They are the station that should be stealing points from everyone equally. And, I think they could even expand there playlists more then they do. They should be basing there playlists mainly off of online download lists...legit mp3 sales and illegal downloads (not saying they do not...but they should be).

I love looking at what people keep on there mp3 players...99% of the mp3 players I look at or lists that I see support pirate and even expanding upon it more. The same person could very easily have David Allan Coe and Easy E on the same mp3 player. There is no reason either of those artists could not be on pirate too.

ooops...sorry bout that. took off on a rant.

I do have to agree with you on all of this.
Pirate really isn't really a rock format, but they do almost stick to a rock format.
I have never heard any country, or rap on Pirate.

I have not heard any country/rap on pirate but bet it would work...
johnny cash, hank jr, various other big downloaded country...and miranda lambert and all the other angry female country top 40 sounding artists would fit.

rap wise...there is plenty of rap that hits in the top downloaded charts too....hell lots of my non rap listening friends even have NWA/Easy E, snoop, etc on there mp3 players...

Cruising down the street in my 64 jocking the freacks clockin the dough.... went to the park to get the scoop knuckelheads outside cold shootin some hoop... Yeah never gonna happen on any of the stations... Anti rap. But it would be a cool thing to hear. Maybe the "OLD SCHOOL STATION" should take note!

Too hard to ever be the "at work" station and play any kind of rap... at all... there's a station up in Salinas trying that... everything from Stevie B to NWA... Too Short to Joe Public... the jury's still out... stay tuned:

"A car rolls up... who can it be... a fresh El Camino rollin' Alex G!"

even a pirate radio station that opened it up a little more at night I think would work.

All I am saying is if you look at any one of my friends mp3 players the song list would look something as wide spread as this...
NWA
David Allan Coe
Jonas Brothers (do not get me started on how if they can get out of the disney umbrella they could be HUGE HUGE HUGE).
Nirvana
New Order
The Cure
Madonna
Janes Addiction
Van Morrison
Doug E Fresh
Run DMC
Social Distortion
Tool
Billy Idol
Smiths
AC-DC
Brian Adams
David Bowie
Bee Gees
Sugarhill Gang
Billy Squier
Joan Jett
The Who
CCR
GNR
DIO
Johnny Cash
Hank III
George Jones
etc etc etc...most people I know do not listen to one or two types of music is my point. Pirate is a great format that I would love to program and expand upon. The trick would be figuring what you can and can't get away with in business hours and how much you can open it up at night time...what rules do you need on the music as far as seperation by genre/tempo/etc...

I would kill for a chance to program a wide open format like that. And what ever happened to doing special shit on weekends like block party/all live versions/themed sets where the caller has to call in and figure out what the theme of the block was/flashback weekends...all I ever hear now on weekends in most markets is a be caller 10 and win the new yada yada yada cd. booooooring.

What happend to Gina Davis? Bakersfield radio, especially KKXX in the early 90's, was one of the best in the USA. Even better than Los Angeles in my opinion. They will NEVER have a better station than KKXX in the early 90's. Gina Davis, Paul Stevens (aka Paul Avila), Mitch Craig imaging, and Steve Wall as program director all played an important part in the making of Bakersfield radio history.

Gina was a very talented dare devil. So sad her life ended the way it did. Ahhh The Al Polowski nights and the Woodies days....

Gina Davis died from a base jumping accident in 95.

heh...Paul. My first night in radio I show up and he says this button does this and this does that. Just make sure the top of the hour gets played and you will be ok.

The boogieman showed up like 16 hours later to relieve me...seems the person after me was a no show. And to top it off I had no clue where the bathroom was and I was the only one in the building.

I agree the early 90s KKXX station kicked ass...even if I was not into the format the station destroyed the competition.

We did great promotions/stunts/hard work to make sure we were number one in all day parts/demos.

My numbers on X-Factor were HUGE on KKXX and I remember when I got switched to KRAB being told...do not expect the numbers to follow you to KRAB. Those are just KKXX numbers. Well...first trend/book I was on KRAB the numbers followed and were still there till the day I left for the coast. Never did tell the person looks like it was the shows numbers and not the stations but I wanted too...
