KBKS traded from CBS to Clear Channel

This means Seacrest In! Kiss logo will probably be changed to KIIS logo and call it a day!

Interesting move. Pretty much means the end of Top 40 competition in Seattle, which is too bad. If Sandusky were smart they'd retool Movin' to a full blown CHR/Dance to go after the KUBE/KISS combo (and sap listeners from C89.5 in the process).

And it probably also means the rest of the day will be voicetracked out of market. CC also got KXJM in PDX to combo with Z100 so Seattle and Portland will probably cross share voice trackers.

Damn. Someone beat me to it. But from Radio-Info's own news page, here's the detail:
Clear Channel and CBS swap stations in Houston and four other markets
The no-cash swap – rumored since November in the T-R-I newsletter and the quiet appearance of CBS Radio boss Dan Mason at Clear Channel-Houston – solves a Department of Justice problem for Clear Channel. Back in February, it agreed to divest two FMs in Houston as a condition for being sold to Bain Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners. So CBS gets Houston’s hot AC “Mix 96.5” KHMX and Spanish “Mega 101.1” KLOL from Clear Channel. CBS has the capacity to add more FMs to its Houston cluster, which currently has two AMs and two FMs. In return, CBS swaps away a total of five FMs in four different markets, including two of its “Jack” stations. Those are Seattle CHR KBKS/106.1. Baltimore classic hits “Jack” WQSR/102.7. Portland, Oregon’s rhythmic KXJM/107.5 and classic hits KLTH/106.7. And Sacramento’s “Jack” KQJK/93.7. Clear Channel is still under an obligation to divest stations in Cincinnati and San Francisco.

Cincinnati... hmm, Bonneville is there.

Does anyone else think this will be a total mess in Portland? Clear Channel started their own automated classic hits format to go after "K-Hits." Now they'll also have the CHR and Rhythmic CHR in Portland under one roof. More synergy between the Portland and Seattle clusters?

And what about the fact that CC now has 3 "quality" metro FM sticks? (KUBE, KJR, KBKS)

Was it really competitive in the first place? CC did very well in this, there are a ton of options on the table now for both 93.3 and 106.1.

Never have viewed KNHC as a threat. They have a similar mission as KEXP, an internet radio station that happens to have a stick in Seattle.

Nobody really believes that CC will keep both Kiss and KUBE? Right?

Don't tell me any of you are that naive.

Be on the look out for a format change, my guess is rock, to come after KISW.

Generally a dance format would be better suited for an HD-2 channel, rather than occupying a analog full channel. Although, I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of moving 106.9 to a dance/CHR hybrid to run along side/complement KUBE. Doing so and cross promoting the formats could be a death blow for the Seattle Movin', and bring their albeit meager numbers over, fortifying demos for CC.

Are you naive enough to think that Clear Channel, a company that has frozen its promotion, research and other non-essential budgets, will dump the ton of money necessary to go up against KISW?

There's a lot more to format changes than buying new CDs.

In case you haven't noticed, Movin' has affected KUBE, and Kiss will protect KUBE just fine.

106.9?? Ummm.....

Regardless, 106.1 is now the best signal in CC's stable. So I think a shuffling is possible. Could KUBE move to 106.1 and KBKS down to 93.3....very possible.....Or KNBQ could bring country back to 106.1. Even KFNK could be moved there......

Not naive, I programmed for CC for several years. I know how the format changes are done there. ;)

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

And secondly, why KBKS. Of the cards I'd play, I'd lay down a JACK....

VERY interesting. I'm curious to see what moves CC makes. When do they take over operations?

I'm not incredibly familiar with the Seattle market, but could KUBE edge away slightly from the poppier records they play, leaving KISS to cover that territory? KUBE seems to be generally more successful than KISS so maybe they'd be more likely to tinker with the latter, but I still wouldn't be surprised if Britney and Leona Lewis got the boot from 93.3.

At least CC will change the template of KISS' website, if nothing else. It's currently among the ugliest major-market sites around.

This move had been in the works for some time as CBS focuses on top ten markets and is trading away other markets to strengthen top ten clusters. Word on the street is more moves are to come. KBKS will stay right where it is formatically. Clear Channel needs a place to put Ryan Seacrest and that deal is already done. Seacrest will syndicate afternoons or mid-days on KBKS. Mornings will go to one of five Clear Channel morning syndication initiatives. Leading candidates are John, Jay and Rich, Kidd Kraddick, Valentine and a new show in development out of San Diego. Clear Channel is mandating a syndicated morning show parameter and is in the process of clearing shows in multiple markets. The syndicated shows are actually rating quite well. KBKS will stay Mainstream CHR and serve as an inexpensive flanker to KUBE. The combo will control 18-34 buys in the Seattle market. Same concept in Portland with this deal and more deals rumored to be coming.

This will be a great benefit to CC, it will allow them to concentrate their efforts to reach the 18-34 year old audience with both KUBE and KBKS together.

To all that thought Mamma was nuts. Remember when I said MOVIN and Monti would outlast KISS. Looks like it is the truth with Kiss becoming the automated stepsister to KUBE. mamma thinks the big winner here is Movin wherre the station can come in between KUBE and KISS and have local talent with local focus. Many thought Mamma was crazy but today MOVIN survives and is not cutting back and THE wOLF survives and is not cutting back while KMPS fires staff. MOVIN has beat KISS on a four book in every sigificant demo and WOLF has beat KMPS in four out of last five trends. A year ago I said times were a changing but my only regret is the economy is so bad. Mamma would be happy if this didn't mean so many people losing their jobs. Mamma is also out of radio now but am proud of the ya ya sisters at MOVIN and that they ended up surviving!!! Guess in the end mamma does know best.

Funny how you always appear just as someone's been thinking of you, as I was earlier today.

Trends aren't accredited by the M.R.C., as I just learned. They're really more volatile and not as reflective of the true audience as the actual 3 month books... but I digress.

Regardless, Mamma, you must be sad about more change in ya ya Portland ya.

Radio could not be stranger these days. The CBS Group with the top two stations on a four book 25-54 slashes staff and then just gives a Seattle station to their competitor. Clear Channel will undoubtedly keep KBKS as a flanking station to protect KUBE and will use it as a place to put CC syndicated talent. I am surprised CBS made this move in Seattle. There are many smaller markets that could have provided stations to fill out the Houston swap. Why hurt one of your stronger clusters in market 14? I

am equally surprised that Mamma seemed to actually have a bit of a heart in her post. MOVIN may have outlasted KISS but not much of this had to do with better programming at Sandusky. Neither KISS or MOVIN has been heating it up on the ratings front. I wonder how long MOVIN will last against a combo of KUBE/KBKS?
