KBSG is now B 97.3

...it's the advertising geniuses who spend millions annually researching their consumers who've decided not to target 55+ consumers using radio.

There are days when I wonder if some radio sales people can sell a life jacket to drowning victims on the Titanic ... but then I look at some of the surveys that corporate marketing people put together and I start to believe it's more of a level playing field. These folks will do telephone or online surveys that promise "we'll only take a moment of your time" and then proceed to ask 657 questions six ways to Sunday about the dumbest stuff. Once, for example, I got a promo coffee mug from Amazon and thought "this is kind of nice". Four weeks later, I'm stuck in a 20-minute survey asking how well I liked their PROMO COFFEE MUG, whether the color was appropriate, whether the design was good, etc. I finally asked if I sent the coffee mug back ... could I get the hell off the phone??

Microsoft, many others do this too....ask questions that go far beyond what a consumer cares...all because the marketing people tend to get so micro-focused in STUFF THAT DOES NOT MATTER.

In the end...not a far stretch to believe these "decision makers" are the same ones incapable of stepping back and deciding if a different demo target just might be worth a buy here and there. I could, for example, see a whole campaign specifically to 50+ people on benefits of owning a computer and staying in instant touch with families, grand kids, etc. as many in that age cell simply won't take the step because the perception is "too complicated".

Then again, could be they are still collating results from the survey about the promo coffee mugs.

I'm referring to real, scientific research, not informal online surveys. They are not one in the same.

Has KBSG essentially dropped all of the fifties titles from their library and added some early eighties songs, as KRTH/LA has done, with terrific results?

KBSG dropped 50s music a long time ago. It was the old-Oldies baggage associated with the brand name "KBSG- Oldies 97.3" that was holding them back.
"Oldies" isn't a format name so much as it's a brand name representing (by and large) 60s music.

Some of these posts would lead a person to believe that KBSG and KJR-FM are running the same format. I just had a chance to compare their playlists and it looks to me that KJR is a traditional Classic Hits station whereas KBSG is an updated Oldies station which within the last 6 months has taken on the Classic Hits moniker. It isn't the same format at all! One is rock based and the other is hit based.

Good observation- they are not one in the same. And, their presentations are quite different.

Yes, but KZOK has already nailed the classic rock audience in Seattle. KBSG is 60s 70s and some 80s classic hits. Is it any wonder KJR's ratings are so bad? I think KJR ought to just go completely 80s and 90s at this point. Get an identity and image separating themselves. In a perfect world (my perfect world) KBSG, or I should say B97.3 would be strictly 60s and 70s with NO 80s, KJR would be 80s and 90s and KZOK can continue doing what they're doing because it works.
By the way, it was a blast hearing Casey Kasem and AT40 from the week ending July 27, 1974 yesterday on B97.3. Like a time machine.

On the other end of the spectrum, Classic Hits(as it was known before about 6 months ago)is rock based hits aimed more at females than Classic Rock, which is more album based and not necessarily hits. Classic Hits is also somewhat softer. Neither format has much to do with the former Oldies stations that have updated and are hit based, not really depending on genre. They play rock but also soul, ballads and just about any other type of music that made the top 40 in the late 60s and 70s.

any insight to any shuffling at B97.3? The "yellow pages guru" aka "Kill Bill" was pointing out a few potential paths. Any gurus who might know more?
