KBSZ A.J.

I think Lumberyard 1440 has a new buddy station in the metro...

KBSZ 1260 Apache Junction--freq/COL change from 1250 Wickenburg--
is on air this morning (before/after 9:00 AM). Legal ID ran at 9:01:17.

Appears to be running 800 w-D/50 w-N, ND (noted as a CP in the FCC
AM Query); with an app. for 3.5 kw-D/50 w-N, ND.

Liners:
"Rock And Roll 1260"
"You're listening to Rock And Roll 1260"
"This is Rock And Roll 1260"

Late '50s through early '70s music heard so far.
(The Old Gringo would not approve, demographically. ;D)

FCC AM Query:

CP dated 01/05/10:

Wasn't the kiddie campus station at ASU on 12~Sixty a while back? And 50 watts at night aint enough pow-pow-power to penetrate all those mobile homes out in A.J. Too bad this move from the far west side to the far east side doesn't decrease the number of Ancient Modulation © stations in the Valley. But hey...H.D. will save the band!

What does that mean? It's on both 1260 and 1250? I'm sure I can't reach the Apache Junction one...

I believe the Wickenburg transmitter has been off the air for close to a year. 1260 puts a noisy but audible signal into the Sky Harbor area.

Yes, but they had to move to 1330 because of KBSZ. I think they're off for the summer - there's been no signal on 1330 for several days.

800 watts barely makes it to Tempe. They're noisy but audible near the airport and fade in and out as I drive south on I-10 to the 'Tuke.

There still could conceivable be a far-NW valley station on 1250, although I'm not holding my breath. And, as far as AM goes, HD stands for "Happily Dead." I believe all the AM hash in this area is gone, save for Mickey Mouse 1580.

Strong signal at the Scottsdale Airpark...gets noisy west of Tatum.

Music was all 70s for 20 minutes...now it's Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven.

And...this is weird...some of the music sounds about 2 RPM slow (My Sweet Lord, Bennie and the Jets, Best Of My Love by the Eagles).

Chuck Berry just finished...now it's the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

A Google map of the transmitter coordinates shows it to be in the back of a gravel yard! Either that or a junkyard - I can't go to "street view" at this location.

Lumberyard 1440, Junkyard 1260. Two different stations, one great format-team. ;D

(Although 1260 seems to be more like KCDX, but with oldies instead of classic rock.)

Signal is way worse at Greenway and Tatum than it is a mile south at T-Bird and Tatum.

The power poles along 7th Street north of T-Bird overwhelm the signal, but get more than a block west of them and it cleans up. Still noise in the signal, though. I doubt an average listener would find it tolerable.

Some good old-fashioned KFRC-style processing could boost the apparent loudness and keeping stuff tight could mask the noise, but this is KYA or KGIL (both 5kw at 1260) with the stick in sand instead of moist California soil and with 4200 fewer watts...it's not going to cover the metro in listenable fashion.

1330 is still on the air. They were playing some alt-rock at around 4:30pm.

KOY 1230, as well as the other Clear Channel-owned AM's still put out an IBOC signal. It's no top priority for them, though.

don't forget Graveyard 13~Ten, Sports Parkinglot 6~Twenty and Landfill 8~Sixty!

I was listening earlier today and the signal was nice and strong around the ASU campus in Tempe. I'm excited to see another Phoenix station besides the Lumberyard try the oldies format. Brings some good variety to the radio dial!

I'm wondering, though, what the night-time signal is going to be like. I'll have to try and give it a listen later tonight. Of course, any night-time signal is better than what we get from our beloved Goldmine! ;D

It was a little difficult to track the KBSZ power down, as by 7:00
the signal was already getting hammered in the 'Tuke.

About 7:18:20 PM the signal seemed to "fade down" to almost
nothing, so perhaps that was the power drop. Can a new rig
(assuming it is one) drop from 800 to 50 watts in what sounds
like a fade, rather than the typical "cut carrier briefly and come
back on"?

Maybe our good buddy catfish (with a "C") or our other engineer
pro wattsup can help us out with an answer. Just don't ask them
to discuss SRP. ;)

Currently I'm still hearing a weak signal mixed with others on 1260,
but you can tell what song is on (Angie, preceded by The Letter).
The 50 watts from A.J. is discernible, whereas the 100 KayFuNNster
watts from north Phoenix is not.

9:05 PM at Frank Lloyd Wright and the 101 in Scottsdale...Chuck Berry's My Ding-A-Ling fading in and out with the other fractions of stations on 1260.

Whatever format this ends up being, they've gotta remember that your night signal is part of your morning drive and part of your afternoon drive part of the year.

Here's the monthly sunrise/sunset (power-up/down) times for KBSZ
1260 Apache Junction:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/srsstime?dlat=33&mlat=22&slat=56.00&dlon=111&mlon=32&slon=9.00&tzone=C

It's close to most of the other metro AMs, however they don't get the
"extra" :15 in June/July evenings, but do get :15 more during mornings
in December. (Comparison to the KT'R 620 chart.)

When they were on 12~Fifty and in Wickenburg, KBSZ had pre-sunrise pow-pow-power of 350 watts. Gotta tell ya, the smart money is on Lumberyard 14~Forty: more power day, night (currently not used) and pre-sunrise. Plus a heck of a lot more fannies within their coverage map. Nurse Jeff and I won't make the switch for more worn out oldies from the Seventies on 12~Sixty. That's why there's KOOL!

Isn't 1100 a "landfill" station as well (not referring to the programming, which is garbage at times, but the signal)?

The nighttime signal is audible indoors with some static, but gets trampled upon by a Mexican station in the car, in Ahwatukee. Was up in North Scottsdale tonight, and it appeared that KGIL in L.A. was dominant on 1260.

The playlist seems to be tight (I heard "Piano Man" twice in a three hour span tonight). Maybe we can get some insight from someone who was last heard at KXAM, who may be involved in the programming...

On the air between 5:45 and 6:28 AM, but still on night power.

As inferred elsewhere in this thread, there's not much of a playlist
on the hard drive--songs are repeated much too often. Overall it
seems a bit "heavier" than Lumberyard 1440, but then you hear
some '50s moldy oldie... ::)

BTW, one song I've not yet heard is Brown Eyed Girl. ;D
