KR4BD said:KKOB is virtually unheard off where I live in Central KY. WABC and to a lesser extent WVNS own 770 in these parts.
I just spend a week in Colorado Springs, which is NOT in their main night coverage area according to RadioReference, but found KKOB was very dominate on 770 each evening. In the early 1960's when I lived in Southern California (when it was KOB) they owned 770 every night.

KR4BD said:It's a typo. I corrected it before I sent it, I thought. Should be WVNN in Northern Alabama.

Never here in VA during nights. Just WABC.

Only WABC here in the Chicago area although many years ago I heard KOB once or twice.

Even WABC can be tough to impossible here, thanks to CBS' use of that infernal IBOCrap on WBBM's signal. From where I am, I can null some of it out to at least discern some words on WABC - on a good night. I'd imagine that WABC would be impossible from Chicago or much of DuPage because you wouldn't even be able to null it. And being too close to their tx in Itasca would also delete you from being able to get WABC as long as the IBOC was on. I know it was very tough to hear from Buffalo Grove, and that's a good 15 air miles north of the tx site.
Anything weaker than WABC would be an impossible catch from this area under present circumstances.
Get well up into Wisconsin and WABC comes in probably as well as it did in 1970. Every time I've been up in the Green Bay area, I've gotten a great signal from them. Never gotten a peep from KKOB anywhere east of (roughly) I-35.

On a couple of occasions that winter, I couldn't go to the nighttime directional pattern due to severe icing on the (then) open wire transmission line which fed tower #2.
The ice caused the two center conductors to sag and short against two of the four outer conductors.
I don't recall whether I reduced the transmitter power to 10kw or kept it at 50kw.
Eventually, I was able to break the ice, re-tension the center conductors and switch to the nighttime DA mode.
I received a number of QSLs from areas that normally couldn't receive the station at night.
One QSL was from an old friend in Lakeland, Florida.
