kcbQ

i really like the shows on the Q. dont hear any Q Tips though. lol. they never do good in ratings but good signal. no one ever says they are p----- off. the new kogo knuclehead is using that phrase already. oh well

Yes I wish this station could carry Glenn Beck and Michael Savage, then I dont have to listen to both KFMB and KOGO.

I enjoy the programming on KFMB, and now that Rick Roberts is gone I never hear any cussing! Mike Slater doesnt cus or use profanity. Plus KOGO is no longer (except for Rush) doing political talk it is just talk and not much political meat to it.

It's amazing how bad KCBQ is. Take Mark Larson for example. to try to get a few listeners to his show he announces that so and so guest will be on tomorrow. Of course the guest never shows up. Finally three days later the guest shows up. Here's another one: sometimes the Q records a traffic segment and runs it all day long. Here's another one and it's a favorite. A couple of years ago a family got lost in the mountains up in northern cal, I think, during Christmas. they were eventually rescued but the next day good 'ole Frank Caesar did his news cast stating the family was still lost.. Good 'old Metro News, they always have up to date news people.

But don't worry, the Q still has Cahrmichael writing warm and fuzzy feel good stories about Mark Larson.

Frank is still around??????

Chris has agreement whereby he gets to tussle Mark's hair in exchange for good coverage and by being mentioned on sdradio.net Mark reaches many more people than he does through his radio show.

KCBQ has gotten worse.

We have established the poor programming, the re-run traffic reports, and the one day old news reports. Now let's talk about
illiteracy. My view is if you are a newsreporter, you should also listen or watch the news so as to learn proper pronunciation of people, places, or things.
I am going to guess that KCBQs newspeople are illiterate.

There was a troubling sign last year: A Mark Larson favorite was Arianna Ortiz, who could'nt pronounce a foreign name if her life depended on it.
Witness Ms. Ortiz's breathless excitement as she informed the listeners of the earthquake in Oak-a-till-uh Wells, or the traffic accident at Fuh-liss-uh-tuh
Lane.

But I was stunned last week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesday, Judy Gale told us about the Junior Say-O death. On Thursday morning, during the Mark Larson show, Alan Lee also updated us on the tragic Junior Say-O death. And then at the 1pm hour on Friday, Suzy what's her name gave us another full update on the Junior Say-O death.

There are some college radio stations in town that have competent news folks, and I think they would love the chance to be on a so-called established radio station. Hopefully Mark might give them a chance but with his problems it ain't going to happen. Besides, with Chris Cahrmichael still stroking him with cutesy folksey blogs about how only Mark Larson cares, Mark probably has gone blind

Stunning

There are easy solutions to bad radio! There are pre set push buttons to to switch stations with. The on and off button, the volume control.

But mis-pronunciations are very lame. Salem is not known for their high quality in any market at all. If you look at their other markets 6 + ratings (which I know mean absolutely nothing) they are all in the mud ratings wise (with the exception of maybe one or two stations).

KCBQ was dead 15-20 years ago when the oldies left both the AM and FM and the station was sold to Par Broadcasting, since then it has only been a joke.

To me, listening to bad radio is entertaining. I've worked for the best-of-the-best so I used to listen to the worst-of-the-worst for pure entertainment. Some stations I listened to, which will remain nameless, were no better than a poor college station.

So, go ahead and mispronounce... it brings a smile to some faces.

I still wonder how KCBQ makes money? poor ratings, and I hear almost no local commercials. They have a high power bill to pay for and they are paying tower space rent?

Maybe David Gleason can shed some light on KCBQ's ratings that actually matter instead of the 6 +. And I would be interested to hear your thoughts David as whether KCBQ makes money? Especially after spending almost a million bucks on the diplexing gear and having to build either one or two additional towers at KECR.

My hunch is Salem makes enough money off of selling blocks of time on its preaching stations to subsidize their right wing talk stations. It's the Air America business model with deeper pockets.

Having had a couple of conversations with folks in Salem management over the years (who tell you a whole lot less than it looks like they're telling you), I think you're right, John. The cash cows are the all-religion stations that don't show in the ratings. They keep the zero-point-whatever conservative secular talk stations in the black.

Where did Salem's deep pockets come from is it borrowed like Clear Channel, Cumulus, and CBS??

Not anymore. Salem's two founders started with an AM in Bakersfield in 1969. In five years of charging preachers for airtime, they made enough to buy a second station in Oxnard. In the late 70s, they took out personal loans and mortgaged their homes to make their first expansion into large markets, but they launched an IPO to fund their massive growth in 1999, at the top of the market, and a second stock offering in 2004, when the market was still strong.

The stations they bought were reasonably-priced signals that were no longer competitive as commercial signals in expanded metros ( KCBQ is a perfect example), the preachers on the religious stations pay for their airtime, the secular conservative talk stations use mostly Salem's syndicated hosts, and costs are low.

Salem doesn't have "deep pockets" in the traditional sense (it would take a lot of their stations added together to equal the value of a KFI or a KRTH), but their cash flow and profitability are enviable.

Check out http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/salm/news-headlines to see some info including links to charts of their stock prices: not a lot of cash flow, but they did recently send out $900,000 in dividends - how many radio companies have paid a dividend?

Salem also owns a radio concern called KKNT Phoenix. Last year they ran an 81-day-old newscast. Three days later they ran that same newscast — twice.

Coming soon to stations across the country: "The News 84 Days Ago". It will likely be syndicated by Salem. Runs twice a day!

Salem runs a POS automation system that is meant for small markets, but its not worth a plug nickle. It WILL for whatever reason out of the blue pull an old news cast and play it repeatedly.

Salem runs Enco in most of their shops. I wouldn't call that small market.

No matter what automation system you install, if you tell it to do the wrong things, it will do exactly what you tell it to do.

Enco sucks! I ran it at several stations and couldnt wait to get back to Scott Studios or even the Clear Channel automation
