KDKA #1 IN JANUARY BOOK

As for 'DVE. That morning show is beyond stale at this point and they have a steady play list of the same old same old all the time. I've tried to listen, but they make it tough. I listened one day and they talked constantly about Al Roker's admission that he soiled his pants in the White House. Funny once...not every three seconds, and not painfully tied in to every joke. When you do that, you become the Dingo and the Baby morning show with whacky sound effects and implant giveaways. Or it becomes readily apparent that you aren't writing good material so instead you are beating an adolescent joke into the ground.

I think KDKA's spike might be because those guys are likeable and dare I say "vanilla" and people might be gravitating back to that after such a nasty election season.

Thinking further about what KD is doing right:

-They are about the only local station with any serious commitment to local
news. (no slight intended towards KQV, but I learned sitting in my house in the
dark for a few evenings that if you want to know what's happening in the world
after six KD is your only choice)

-Mangino and Marty Griffin offer just about the only in-depth coverage of the local
Allegheny County politician hijinks (the Orie sisters, Chief Nate Harper, Rich
Fitzgerald's continuing evolution into Benito Mussolini, the property tax fiasco,
etc.) if you do not subscribe to the PG and/or PCNC.

-People for whatever reason just really like Rob Pratte, Larry Richert,
Father Lengwin and Tradio.

But let's be clear about one thing... despite KD's #1 status 6+, the overwhelming majority of their audience is over 55, so they probably still aren't much of a factor 25-54.

Or is it the old "I set my dial to 1020 in 1972 and it's still frozen in place there" factor?
Frankly I don't understand how any of this drives them to #1.

That's exactly why. Market heritage and top-of-mind recall. KD has had this for years, plus a 50,000 watt signal. It's what you grew up listening to in the morning, and what your kids will too. Despite all the gloom and doom surrounding the AM band, the blowtorches will survive.

So does that mean that as soon as you grow out of the 25-54 demo you suddenly say, "I think I should listen to KD now!" :D

Couldn't the same arguement be made for 102.5?

And at the stroke of midnight on his birthday, he felt strangely compelled to retune the dial to 1320...

So why were their ratings totally in the tank for so long?

That makes the most sense.

I don't think snow is a big factor since the closing/delay crawl runs constantly on three TV stations. Plus, some of the delays and cancellations are posted the night before.

I don't think heritage is a big factor since KDKA-AM had years of mediocre ratings before the recent bounce back.

Plus the great majority of their audience is too old to have school-age kids.

I still say this is almost entirely tied to the decline of the conservative shows on 104.7.

You may be on to something there. Aside from Limbaugh (and Quinn when Rose is not on a tear)
it has been hard to listen to. Jerry Doyle is unimpressive, and Hannity is just bad radio.

Having said that when I tune away from them KDKA and their "whatever the hell it is"
lineup is not one of my next 25 choices. Do you really think the listeners who were tuning
in for Michael Savage find KD a satisfying alternative?

I don't think it's about school-aged kids so much as weather updates, traffic conditions, and just what's going on locally when there is a bad weather. There is just no other place to get that.

Local TV news will only spend the first 20 minutes on that.

"We have team coverage..."

How much better would their ratings be if they could be heard in Washington, Pa. at night? Perhaps its time for WBZ to shut off their HD. Of course, the 3 people who listen to their HD would be upset.
