the 937thefan.com [which redirects to 937thefan.radio.com] is now up and active.

Oh and its a Wordpress Blog - well technically a Wordpress VIP "website" - which is explained here http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-get-wordpress-vip-blog

They midaswell have just redirected it to their Facebook Fan page.....

CBS changed the B94 name to 93.7 The Fan on their live stream player. I'm removing that station now... CBS is outta their minds (they better NOT mess with any other of their CHR stations!).

B 94 is stunting this weekend by playing a jack like format with playing the same 20 or 30 songs over and over from AC/DC to Alabama to Technotronic

Jock Jams, more or less.

The irony, of course, is that the new 93.7 won't be playing music.

But they feature some of the hottest jingles, I've heard in Pittsburgh in a long time!! Looking forward to the debut on Monday!

It looks like CBS is following the same blueprint for KDKA-FM as they did when they launched "The Sports Hub" in Boston six months ago. It's all about the talk being local and on FM. The production I've heard so far on the stunt loop online is also similar to Boston. 93.7 won't have play by play, which will slow it's development, but I think Pittsburgh (which is just as provincial about it's sports as Boston) will gravitate to a station that is all local all the time. Why sit through Mike & Mike, Dan Patrick and Jim Rome when all you really want to do is hear about the Steelers? CBS has done a great job with the Boston station. I'd say give 93.7 a chance...

Alas, it's hard for me to get excited about jingles on a Sports station.

A strange world, where Sports plays jingles and music stations don't!

I heard the music loop over the weekend as I was in town. It was funny. Heard Alabama and Fat Boy Slim. So long B-94 again.

Been listening all morning. Jingles are great. Lots of first day mistakes running the board. Whose running the board? Paul Alexander is in lead on the morning show, and Burton is barely getting a word in.

Tough to evaluate day 1 because they've had weeks to prepare in some cases. Not bad so far.

Alexander definitely dominated the morning show. I didn't like him on KD and I don't see that changing a whole lot.

Vinnie mid-days is a tough listen. He sounds like he just got here a few days ago. To his credit, a caller asked him about something he knew about, namely one of the prospects the Pirates got from Seattle for Jack Wilson (he did the Mariners' pre- and post-game shows). He came through as a really knowledgeable baseball guy (and New Yorkers tend to be baseball-intensive, which you can also hear if you listen at all to Christopher Russo on Sirius' "Mad Dog Radio.")

Vinnie and Cook were discussing the name confusion between the Joe Starkey who will be doing their PM drive shift and the play-by-play man who now does the 49ers and Cal games.. neither appeared to know that that the West Coast Starkey was once the Pens' play-by-play man (with the trademark line, "What a Bonanza...")..

But on the other hand, flipping around the dial, Cowherd on ESPN was talking NBA trade deadline and "Will Brett Favre be back"...

970 had fill-ins for Rome, hosting from WDFN in Detroit. They had Jim Leyland on, who is tremendous guest, and they asked him how he would deal with Michigan's new ban on smoking in public places, which he apparently had not heard about... his response was, "Really? Houston, we have a problem..." Best line of the day.

In some respects this is a tough time for 93.7 to start, because there's nothing going on. Not football season, the Pens are on Olympic break, and there was maybe more Pitt basketball talk today than in the entire history of this market. I want to see what they have to talk about on Thursday.

True, but this also gives them time to shake everything out and have things humming along by late summer when things really start going. Basically they have three two-man shows in prime time slots where the people have never worked together before. In the case of Vinnie/Cook and Starkey/Seibel, they never even knew each other until a few weeks ago. It's going to take some time for chemistry to happen (if it ever does).

There's still plenty of Steelers talk with free agency here and the draft pending. You can never go wrong with Steelers topics, any time of the year, any time of day.

Seibel and Starkey are head and shoulders above the other two shows, at least on day 1. You'd somewhat expect that with Seibel having come from doing a national show, and frankly Starkey is much better than Orestes Destrade, with whom Seibel was paired at ESPN.

And, really, there are plenty of non-Steeler topics to develop at this time...
  • Olympics
  • Penguins
  • Pitt Basketball / March Madness
  • Pirates Spring Training
  • The Nascar season is just beginning; Chip Ganassi's car wins Daytona 500

I almost didn't recognize Jim Colony's voice this morning; I'm so used to hearing him doing a duet with Joy Radio out of Canada.

What I've found missing, so far, are the reporters and writers that ESPN can have appear on a show. John Clayton, Buster Olney, Dr. Jerry Punch, etc., help fill in the gaps in the hosts' knowledge, and The Fan doesn't have that kind of supporting cast.

The morning show talked some about the Olympic hockey tournament, one of the other shows' entire commentary on the subject was "I'm not going to watch the Olympics."

There will be interest in Olympic hockey because of the involvement of the Penguins players. There's no interest in any of the other events.
