KDKB IS DONE...SO SAD

So I guess it's true, heritage rocker KDKB is no longer as of next Friday September 15th. My sources say VIVA LA Mexico! Not another one.

To say "that SUCKS" would be a huge understatement. KDKB has been my first preset on my car radio since 1987.
I believe Dr. Evil said it best...
"sick as a dog...gonna vomit." :(

Confirmed. Their website says (in English and Spanish): [red]WE THANK YOU FOR 35 YEARS…TUNE IN 93-3 FRIDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER 15TH AT 9:33 A.M…
WE’LL ANNOUNCE OUR NEW FORMAT…[/red]

Sad to see a long-established station go, but it was years overdue. They're in between KUPD and KSLX musically, so they're apparently the odd station out.

But another Spanish-language station? That's all the valley needs - like a hole in the head. But we are talking about Gumpdusky, remember. ;D

At least they could have told their listening audience on their website that "if you want to keep listening to rock, set your dial to KSLX at 100.7."

If anything, I would have thought if Sandusky switched formats in Phoenix, it would be to the "Movin'" Rhythmic AC format that they program in Seattle. But, looking at the text being in both English and Spanish, that may not be the case. If "Movin'" is still available, this would be an opportunity for 97.5 to pick it up.

Last but not least, will the spirit of KDKB live on in the form of KSLX-HD2? They're expected to flip the HD switch on 100.7 any day now.

Well, hopefully everyone that was working there will land on their feet . . . hate to see people lose their jobs.
Or, they could learn spanish . . . :-\

I think an additional hole in the head would be more useful at this point. Very sad to hear that KDKB is gonna go away...when i moved here in 1975 one of my first memories of valley radio is still "93.3 KDKB ROCKS ARIZONA".

I'm old enough to remember when they were also on 1510 as well as 93.3, 10 kW, non-directional, daytime only on the AM back then, but at least they transmitted from their actual city of license in those days (near Country Club & Broadway, IIRC).

If they're flipping to espanol, the spanish text makes it pretty damn obvious. That makes me think maybe they are "stunting" before a switch to something different. Anything on air?

Have they moved recently? Last I heard they were still on Javelina near Alma School and baseline in MESA?

Their studio might still be there, but I was talking about their 1510 transmitter in the '70s, which is now KFNN and near the 3600-block of E. Pinnacle Peak Rd. in far-north Phoenix.

Man, that really blows.

I grew up on KDKB back when it was the funky alternative rock station.

Oh, joy, another station playing mariachi tunes.

Music radio in this town is dead to me, only music I listen to anymore is Radio Free Phoenix.

I really doubt this is going to be Spanish...

WE THANK YOU FOR 35 YEARS…
TUNE IN 93-3 FRIDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER 15TH AT 9:33 A.M…

LE AGRADECEMOS POR 35 AÑOS...
TEMPLE POR LA MAÑANA DE SEPTIEMBRE EL 15 DE 93-3 VIERNES EN 9:33 MAÑANA... ANUNCIAREMOS NUESTRO NUEVO FORMATO...

The Spanish text is horrible. In fact, "temple" does not mean "tune in" but, in Cuban Spanish, is the "F Word." So unless they want all Phoenix to be copulating on the 15th, I guess there are no Spanish speakers in the building.

It could even be a stunt.

Actually, David, suggesting all Phoenix copulate on the 15th would be the closest to the spirit of the original KDKB that station's exhibited in quite some time.

I'm guessing they'll either do the Movin' format (given that it's theirs in Seattle) or that they're about to capitalize on Power's lack of power at 98.3.

It is an ideal dial position to leach some of that 92.3 audience (and I don't care what you say about digital radios and presets)... Also I doubt anyone would be surprized if Sandumpsky was to cheap to pay for the intellectual property.

As I said before, it would be stupid to have the spanish translation on the site if they were switching to spanish. There would be absolutely no point in waiting till friday if they were giving away the secret now!

93.3 KDKB ROCKS HIP HOPS ARIZONA, BITCHES!

I wonder if they'd change their callsign? KMMV is available.

Michael: LOL funny! You are so right. My very first memory of KDKB was riding in the car with my sister who had it on surreptitiously since our dad didn't approve of that station. This was the early 70s when it was very much the underground station. They were playing some song which included the line: "God said to man; man don't you pee." I have NO idea what that means, but it typifies what KDKB was like. What fun it must have been to work there, play a lot of things no one else would ever play and have some fun.

To quote a Beatle: "All things must pass." And so it is with KDKB.

Hey, nice George Harrison reference. "Isn't It A Pity" would probably apply too.

Yeah, rest in peace KDKB, one of the southwest's FM originals.

While I don't think this strategy makes a lot of sense, movin98.com was registered. Could Sandusky be planning a change at 97.9 instead of 93.3, or could KUPD be moving (no pun intended) to 97.9?

Uh, KUPD has been at 97.9 since Day One in the late '60s or thereabouts. I assume you mean KUPD moving to 93.3?
