KDMX..New Direction?

I'll choose celeb photos over autographs anyday!

And correction on The Mix... SIXTEEN years of this coming up in May. And remember that the last three or four years of the old KMGC-Magic 102.9 were nearly identical in format to Mix.

But this would lend to a good discussion...why do some things work elsewhere but not here? I know there's a HUGE convenience factor to having little radio "franchise" names/formats in each market (i.e. Mix, Jack, Live/Free, Movin', Memories, Arrow, etc, even AMFM's old "Jammin' Oldies") as you can program them the same and from afar and save loads on not having local PDs and MDs. But there comes a time when reality has to override convenience, right? If the format's not making it in certain areas, DROP IT and put something else on.

Think of it this way: Next time you're driving around Houston or San Antonio, look at all the retail chains that have thrived forever in those cities, but failed long ago in Dallas. Luther's BBQ, Brake Check, Big Sur Waterbeds, even Walgreen's before they re-attacked Dallas in the 90s...those come to mind right off the bat. I guess we're just fickle here or something...but there comes a time that you cut your losses and move on.

But remember the old chatter on the board about Susquehanna and how they must have justified, book after book, the poor performance at KDBN and KLIF to their corporate headquarters. The consensus here was that the Dallas office must have been throwing KPLX's successes in corporate's face when the questions would come up, and it served as a convenient distraction from the failures elsewhere. Maybe there was something positive in the AGGREGATE/TOTAL ratings of the entire cluster; enough for corporate to believe the spin and leave things alone. My point is, perhaps this is what's happening with CC in Dallas...pushing an aggregate total to corporate and talking up the ratings of Kiss to distract from what's NOT happening at the other stations. I doubt a CC-owned station in San Antonio is allowed to sit and rot until a 0.0 is achieved.

I tried to listen to MIX, and sat through 7 commercials and promos before I realised I was listening to the EDGE. Then I tuned up, and heard Jen Austin, subbing in mid-days. She was one of the first 'Star System' jocks at gulfstar/capstar/chancellor/AMFM/CC/.

So, let me get this NEW DIRECTION straight...
Tony & Vicky in the New Morning Mix
Lisa Thomas 10-2
That new guy afternoons
Jen Austin nights
Automated weekends
Same music
That IS mindblowing. I don't think Mix will ever change. It brings in too much ad revenue for CC.

Maybe the new direction is to stop calling it the "NEW Mix 102 9" and call it the "OLD Mix 102 POINT 9"???
(Geesh how much did they pay a consultant years ago to get rid of the word POINT in the logo???)
True, with a station billing ~100k a day in ads, you dont change...unless you can make more!!

One of the other advantages of having a pre-packaged format is that you get all your ancillary materials (logos, signage, billboards, letterhead, etc) already done--slight tweak for calls and citys and you're done...in addition, it makes it easier on agency buyers if there's a 'shorthand' for what kind of station they are- What's easier to remember- 'we play a mixture of rock, pop and disco from the 60's through the 90's" or "We're a Jack-FM format"

And one thing I've learned- a lot of times the owners might not like underperforming stations, but they're not willing to shell out the huge bucks needed to market a station to the next level- Take KLIF for example...No matter what they do, will they ever be able to go up against WBAP's huge signal and Rush/Sean line-up? So do they fight to be #1, or just be content to battle KRLD and KSKY for the position as the OTHER news-talks station in town...

Look,

It is what it is, a cookie cutter format in a cookie cutter radio society. It isn't going to change, especially when you have a corporate monkey such as Rick O'Bryan there. If anyone thought that maybe the new direction was maybe a tweak in format, they were scheming off the asbestos coming out of the vents of the HRC Dallas.

I'm sorry Cappy was fired, but anyone that works, or has ever worked, in this profession knows that job security is like the weather. It's never a sure guarantee.

One thing is for now at least, Mix isn't changing and I'll keep using my Ipod.

I love it when stations call themselves the "New" Mix 102.9 for example or the "New" Kiss-FM.

What was wrong the the "old" Mix 102.9 or the "old" Kiss-FM? In fact, many times the "new" station sucks worse than the "old" station. Lastly, are there any rules on how long a station can be "The New" ???

Cappy was CRAPPY, he sucked and Tony sucks as well...........crappy radio big time !!

Why is Rick O'Bryant a corporate monkey? Didn't understand that comment. Didn't he used to be down in Houston? Or does he "tele-commute" similar to what John Dillion used to do or still does between KZPS in Dallas and I think "The Arrow" in Houston ???

KDMX has been using "THE NEW..." for what now, ten years? Maybe fifteen? You can't expect to be taken seriously by calling yourself new for over decade. Just say "Mix 102.9" without "The New" in front of it. How hard could it be?

What do you not like about Tony or Rick?

I believe I said Rick was a corporate monkey. That is my opinion based on CCs record of taking monkeys out of the San Antonio Zoo, shipping them off to radio stations, and placing them as PDs to follow orders. Look at it this way, KHMX and KDMX are almost identical. KHMX is Buzz Lite. KDMX is Edge Lite. I mean, there isn't any challenge or programming genius needed here. You could take a homeless person in front of the Greyhound station in downtown off the street and they could be PD.

I never said anything about Tony.

I don't like Tony and never have. Tony ZaZa ???? What a name...............can you really take him seriously?
He and CRAPPY just sucked in the morning with some of their lame-a** things they tried to do.

I like the way Rick O'Brien or O'Bryan sounds on the radio, liked him when he was in Houston. That is my question. Does he do the Mix show from Dallas or does he phone it in from Houston ??

You want a funny morning show, Bo and Jim on KZPS.

Bo & Jim? I am sure they are nice guys but they have been doing the same shtick for twenty + years. If you want a funny morning show listen to Jagger 8 -Noon on 105.3. http://www.jaggerradio.com/ ;D

O'Bryan originally was at KDMX and left. He resurfaced a few years ago at KHMX. He then left KHMX a short time after Sam Malone started doing morning drive and is where he is now at KDMX.

This is from Tony Zaza's myspace blog - It's The Tony & Vicky Show... What a new direction! ::)

Mix 102.9 Mornings

A number of you have been asking the question "WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON @ Mix 102.9." I want to address this and fill you in so there are no misunderstandings or any other rumors.

Radio is one of those businesses that sometimes things happen we don't understand, we don't like, and that leave people in the dark. So here goes...

I am not going anywhere. I am still with the station and will still be hosting the morning show. My friend Cappy as many of you have heard is no longer with the show. This was not a decision that I made. It goes beyond the people that sit in that room.

The show will now be myself along with Victoria Snee from CW33. Victoria has been apart of the show for about the last year or so with her "Friday Movie Mix"and Tuesdays "STAR STYLE".

She will now be on the air full time with me as part of The Morning Mix with Tony & Victoria.

Cappy is incredibly talented and a great friend. Trust me my stomach is still in knots over the loss of his job. He showed me a ton when I made the move from Afternoons to Mornings almost 2 years ago. He will be missed.

I do want to invite you to come back Monday Morning and listen! We will still be there. We will still have fun. We will play music. And get your day started on a fun/positive note.

If you have any questions regarding this please let me know. I know as a listener this stuff gets frustrating and doesn't make sense so please feel free to hit me up with any questions or comments!

Also, if you want to reach out to Cappy do so. His myspace is www.myspace.com/cappyradio.

Thanks for your understanding and hope you will be there with us Monday Morning at 5am!

Tell a Friend!

Jagger a funny show'? That's pretty funny in itself. Bo & JIM are good,BUT they were a lot funnier a few years ago. Their style and bits have been hampered by the constraints of CC. If they were allowed to return to form, they would be incredibly better. Jody has a good show and Jonathon add a lot with his adlibs. Some bits are "forced" with the over done laughter.but over all its good in comparison to others. Walton and Johnson, what can one say anymore? Funerals have more life in them.

I don' t know either one of those KDMX guys, but I have to give them credit for something here. Radio World ran an article on them last December, about a deal they (Tony and Aaron "Cappy" Cappotelli) set up to catch online predators. They staged their own version of what "Dateline NBC" has been doing since 2004. They set up a fake MySpace page, designed to reel in unsuspecting males to an alledged underage female. Sure enough, many responded, and the guys busted them and turned over the info to the Attorney General. And this apparently is an ongoing project there. On a larger scale, it was done mainly to warn youngsters and their parents about the dangers of MySpace...and to raise awareness.

So instead of wasting airtime with pranks and garbage, at least they did something constructive and a public service. That may not qualify them as great entertainers or make the station any better, but at least they did something to help the community they serve.

Well Mike that is great, but they did some stupid pranks and garbage as well.

Trying to see if people were messing around on their spouse or their boyfriend/girlfriend.
Now that was just true entertainment............NOT !!

Yes, Bo and Jim have been doing a lot of the same stuff over and over through the years, but sometimes
Bo Roberts can just crack me up so good with some of his material............

They are FAR superior to that crap on The Bone in the morning. Those two guys are just totally worthless,
does anybody really listen to them ??

The Bone's ratings should answer that question for you.
