KDOK 1240 is going to be sold!

It's probably Town Square Media's old web stream.. I don't plan to stream KDOK, except for local sports broadcasts. Dealing with Sound Exchange is just too expensive.

Actually there might be another way, it's not expensive at all to start an Internet station. Don't really know a whole lot about stream licensing, but maybe it might be cheaper to stream an FM depending on what company you deal with? And of course you can always contact a web host and / or run a self-hosted SHOUTcast server and stream to it. http://www.shoutcast.com/broadcast-tools

The problem is Sound Exchange is quite expensive if you are a commercial over the air broadcaster. The server/hosting is a fairly insignificant cost compared to their music royalties. You get to pay $0.0013 per listener, per song. It doesn't sound like much, but it adds up very quickly. If you averaged 100 listeners and played 14 songs per hour, that's a bit more than $25000.00 per year, or $250 per listener.

If you are doing this as a hobby, you can use Live 365, etc, who will pay all the royalties. These third party organizations are quite reasonable, but they do not handle commercial over the air broadcasters. The work around is to do a separate "mirror image" web stream, under a different name and use someone like them or Stream Licensing.com. Unfortunately, running two similar programs doubles your work load. Adding KDOK to the radio family has already more than doubled my work load, so, at least for now, I'm going to pass on the streaming, except for live local sports events, which Sound Exchange has no jurisdiction .over.
 
Exactly! On another thread a poster was saying how economical streaming was compared to over the air. Sure, initial start up is less but monetizing every listener that much ($250) just cannot be done and keep in mind that does not include all the other expenses. A radio station in an ideal situation and market might be able to manage about $4 per thousand in retail sales (Per capita income, say, $21,000 a year; of that is $7,000 spent in retail; thus $28 a year in revenue for radio for each listener) but I question if this figure is a 'once was' figure and more llike 50% of that figure mike make more sense in most markets.

I like some of the Captiol versions because they added extra reverb and compression to the songs, but they made a mess out of others like "I Feel Fine" using Duophonic. Some fake stereo tracks become un-listenable (out of phase) on a mono radio and AM.

Nice surprises listening today: Joe Simon's "The Chokin' Kind" (wow!), Cheap Trick's "Don't Be Cruel" and The Kingsmens "Money".

I was surprised you got it up and running so fast. Love the liners too. Great job Chuck!

We've got KLUV....but given my familiarity with KDOK's new sister station (KZQX), I'm really eager to hear the new sound of KDOK. :)
 
:D Murray Head's "One Night In Bangkok". Aside from seeing this video on VH1 Classic a handful of times over the years, I can't say I have heard this song on the radio since about 1986. I have now heard it twice in 2 weeks - once on Sunny and just now on KDOK.
 
I think you were listening at the same time I was. I caught the same song. And like "Walk Like an Egyptian" or "Puttin' On The Ritz" I thought it would never get played on radio again.

Today, we added RDS song info to the translators. It is not perfect, there is a little more work to do, but I think it adds something to the experience.

BTW I saw something tonight on my Jeep's stereo that made me laugh. KDOK was running Kilgore College basketball and the RDS said:

"KDOK - Telephone Line" ;D
