KDOK Lives!!!!

Nice to see the heritage KDOK calls rescued so they don't end up in Pigs Knuckle, MO (or somesuch place) like the KLUE calls. Also nice to see 1240 get a new life after what seemed an eternity (~20 years) of simulcasting. A few comments:

- Still carrying John Boy and Billy in the mornings. Contractual obligation?
- Can still hear 96X audio bleeding through. Hopefully being addressed.
- Audio is still too punchy. Again, hopefully being addressed.
- Obviously sat fed. Who is the provider?
- Can this station survive with no or limited nightime signal in the 2 largest cities in the market? The daytime signal in Longview is very good, but what is it like in Tyler? I guess they picked the right time of the year to start, with maximum daylight hours for the next few months, but what will happen this winter when they lose most of their audience before 7:00 AM and after 5:30 PM?

This was a huge surprise today. Kudos to Gap for finally putting something different on 1240. I just wonder how successful it will be too, can they sell it on such a puny signal? They are running Scott Shannon's True Oldies format.

1240's signal is only good for Kilgore/Longview/Gladewater during the day, and even with 1K nights, it disappears in Longview at night. I always wondered if that tower site (behind the Ramada Inn) could be moved.

It sounds like they backed off on the processing since this morning, but that old single band processor they've been using for 20+ years still punches "holes" on hard drum beats. I wish they'd get an Optimod AM.

And could this be a trial run for one of Gap's Tyler FM stations to flip to oldies? (96.1 or 107.3?)

Sound quality much better now and can no longer hear 96X in the background.

Even though it's canned, I like the music selection. Get to hear a lot of 60's and early 70's stuff that 92.1 had abandoned. And since I grew up in the 70's, listening to top 40 radio on KLUE, KLIF, WLS, XEROK, etc, to me this type of music belongs on AM.

However, I think that they are going to have to get a better signal in Tyler to survive. Any chance 690 could be resurrected? Other than that, it seems that 107.3 would be the best candidate to flip.

Isn't 107.3 #1 in the ratings? Why in the world would you flip that??

If Jerry Russell FINALLY lets go of the license, then there would be a chance to simulcast it with 1240. As much as I would want to get KZEY away from Russell, which is wishful thinking on my end, it would be awesomely great to see a change to see KDOK spread out the coverage with 690. I do not think GAP would let KISX go of their urban AC format although they were oldies from the beginning up until about near mid-1991 when Don Chaney had them.

Overall, I am very impressed that GAP finally took the initiative of putting SOMETHING on the 1240 band after 20 agonizing years of classic rock simultation from 96X. Now we can enjoy the oldies that we can all relate to.

Any new word on whats going on with KZEY? 690 would be a fine place for the True Oldies format in Tyler.

The new Gap GM ran a True Oldies station in Lufkin (KVLL, Sunny 94.7), I guess he likes the format. :D

Nothing really new as of yet.

Scott Shannon's TRUE OLDIES isn't bad at all. It plays a wide variety of oldies and isn't very repetitive. Wished they'd at least put one local personality on there... Paul Berry, Mick Fulgham or someone from the former KDOK. However, I applaud them for taking advantage of hole that Gleiser left when they flipped to Neo-Con Talk.

As far as KZEY goes, I hope it makes a comeback under a new owner. However, I hope it stays with an R&B format. It is such a heritage R&B station, I'd just hate to see it become something else. I know they can't compete with The Blaze and Hot 107.3, but an Urban Oldies/Blues/Gospel station could sway the older demos. It's just been dark for so long now, that they'd really need to do some serious advertising and marketing to get the station back on the map.
