KDUS to become NBC Spors Radio affiliate

Proving they don't care about what their audience wants in favor of programming around their paid afternoon show, KDUS passed up a chance to affiliate with CBS Sports Radio and went directly to NBC Sports.

Just another day in Phoenix sports radio land...

I think they missed the mark on this one. CBS has a much better line up than NBC. What a waste...

Maybe CBS wants cash + barter, but Dial Global just wants barter.

Maybe Dial Global is paying for clearance.

Maybe CBS Sports Radio is eying 1260/96.1 as their new home. I can't believe that the comedy format is anything but temporary.

Or maybe (WARNING! Pie-in-the-sky speculation alert!) CBS is looking to buy an AM to put CBSSR on. 860? 1580?

1260/96.1 is an inferior signal to even 1060. Besides, I like hearing the stand-up on the west side now (during the day, at least)! I still see them activating Apache Junction's new 1340 and adding Yahoo! while bringing back those brokered shows they had during the day on 1260.

I don't think CBSSR is looking to enter Phoenix with a whimper, but they're not going to sacrifice a still-profitable country station that has its ups and downs to do so.

When is 1340 supposed to move? Last I checked, they're still transmitting from Globe - barely audible in east Mesa.

Sounds like they don't want to blow up any of their FMs. If they really want to bring CBSSR to Phoenix, they'll have to contract with a smaller station or buy one. As far as I know, TMISU still want to unload 860, and I can't believe that The Mickey Mouse outfit still wants to pay the electric bill on a 50,000 watt transmitter with very few listeners (Don't most kids listen to Radio Disney online or via satellite?). Unless they're sick of KTAR Arizona Sports 620 preempting their PxP (notably the baseball playoffs and World Series) for lame Cardinals suckup talk, and move ESPN Radio to 1580 sometime in the future.

I just love the press release they put on the website that makes people think that Roc and Manuch actually have a loyal listening audience. I know it's April 1, so they can't be serious! ;D

Fixed. ;D

For the most part, CBS doesn't seem to plug in the automation and walk away with sports radio. The only place I see them doing that is on a 500 watt daytimer in Pasadena, TX (KIKK). Everywhere else they tend to run live and local sports stations and use the network for updates and overnights.

So, even though KMLE needs help, which looks like a harder slog: building a country station back up or creating a new local sports station and breaking into a crowded field? Based on what they're going through in Tampa, I'd try to fix KMLE.

If they needed clearance in Phoenix, they would have dangled some money in front of someone to pick the network up or put it on a HD subchannel and paired it with a translator. But I don't see the logic in blowing up KMLE just to give Jim Rome a 100,000 watt signal to flop on.

Last I checked, in Seattle the CBS O&O has a high-profile afternoon show, with the network in all other dayparts.
Can't help but wonder if CBS already has something happening in Phoenix that hasn't come to light yet.

Would TMISU sell 8~Sixty to SeeBS? In a heartbeat. Does SeeBS want a lame Ancient Modulation station as their Sports Flagship in Phoenix? Doubtful. So who does that leave on Ancient Modulation? No one. Hmmmm...how 'bout a rimshot from Towers Mtn or even Gilbert?

Cumulus just flipped a rimshot-FM trimulcast in the Twin Cities to CBS Sports Radio. While Cumulus doesn't own any stations here, it does show that CBS will sign rimshot stations if necessary, even if they own stations in the market (they weren't going to blow up WCCO or any of their full-power FM stations there for a 24-hour sports network). Of course, Cumulus is the distributor for CBSSR, just like Dial Global is for NBCSR.

Which makes me wonder if Dial Global will move their PxP from XTRA to KDUS now?

And Rome certainly would not flop here. He's always been huge in Phoenix. I can't stand him, but there is still an audience for stuck-in-the-90s sports-smack in this market. ;D

Outside of KGOW in Houston (that is still the flagship station yes?) does YSR have anybody left? They've been dumped in San Francisco, Miami, and now Phoenix!

They added Will Kemp's KMZQ in Las Vegas recently. However, that station seems to change formats yearly.

Yes, Gow carries his own network (most of the time). The flagship station is currently in ratings free-fall. They recently purchased the local ESPN Radio affiliate and are keeping it mostly unchanged.

YSR had some entertaining hosts for awhile, but right now it's a hot mess.

Once they lose Czaban, they'll be history. He seems like a good fit for Fox Sports Radio, if they ever have a morning drive opening.

What is CBS doing in markets where it has 2-channel operations, such as Detroit and Philadelphia. Both those markets have local sports talk and pxp on the FM and national programming on the AM. IINM, WIP-AM carries Dial Global sports and one of Philly's college b-ball teams. WIP also simulcasts Eagles' games with WIP-FM.

No way will CBS blow up any full-market FM for CBS Sports Radio! It seems CBS' philosophy is the Detroit/Philadelphia model, live and local on FM, national on AM. :)

In the latest Seattle book, AM 1090 didn't even show up in the ratings. The afternoon guys are local, but high-profile? Not according to the numbers.

Regarding KDUS .... what happened with the studio? Kemp wasn't able to work Thursday or Friday and reprinted this management statement on bobkempbottomline.com:

– “We sincerely apologize for the interruption in our local programming this week. We have had major technical studio issues. Our engineer is diligently working to get this resolved. The Sportszone with Bob Kemp will return as soon as we have resolved these problems. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our new NBC Sports Radio programming.”

AUXRSS, I noticed those Seattle CBS ratings, too. Not sure how much they care, as long as the spots clear. It's interesting to note that recently in some cities (St. Louis is one example), sports-talk ratings have dropped significantly in the past year. It just could be that CBS and NBC have very bad timing, getting on the sports-talk bandwagon as many listeners are jumping off.
