KDUS to become NBC Spors Radio affiliate

AUXRSS, I noticed those Seattle CBS ratings, too. Not sure how much they care, as long as the spots clear. It's interesting to note that recently in some cities (St. Louis is one example), sports-talk ratings have dropped significantly in the past year. It just could be that CBS and NBC have very bad timing, getting on the sports-talk bandwagon as many listeners are jumping off.

Two of St. Louis' three pro teams are on CBS news/talk O & O KMOX (Cardinals & Blues). The Rams are the only team on a sports station, WXOS (101.1 FM). Without pxp, it's almost impossible to make it as a sports station. :)

Even with PxP (Cardinals and Coyotes in the past, ASU minor sports today), it's tough to be a sports station in Phoenix unless you're KTAR.

KTAR has all the pro teams in the Valley (except the Coyotes) and ASU football and men's b-ball, which certainly gives KTAR a high profile. Also, IINM KTAR has a better signal than competitors KDUS and KGME. I know the Phoenix market has no 50 kW AM blasters like LA or SF. :)

You're right...all our 50kw's are non-blasters: KFNX, KPXQ and KMIK. Either low power at night, very directional or wrong end of the Ancient Modulation band.

TMISU have a lock with 6~Twenty, 92~Three, 98~Seven, and if necessary, 8~Sixty. No other group has this kind of firepower.

Au contrair, Herr Doctor!

(How's that for mixing languages, senor?)

Anyhoo... If the boys and girls at CC Phoenix were so inclined to get into the sports biz (other than dipping their toe with Big Ben 910 - it rhymes, sue me) they could put the hurt on TMISU.

This will probably not happen, but it's not far-fetched. CC has the AM and FM signals (well, 550 anyway), that they could easily put the Cards, ASU, D-backs or even Suns on KFYI and simulcast on FM. ASU was on KFYI not so long ago. It makes sense.

It seems unlikely that Sarver or Kendrick would move from 620, but money talks. And since money talks, CC will probably never do it since they're in debt up to their South Mountain HAAT. ASU or the Cards? They have been known to shop for the best deal....

CC has five Phoenix stations in the top 10. No way are any of those changing to sports or anything else. KYOT is the lowest rated CC FM so it might be a target for a flip. Even adult standards KOY is beating sports KGME! :)

And then some!

Agreed that none of the CC FM sticks is likely to go full-time sports. It doesn't make sense financially. But you could make a case for the Cards or ASU to make the switch. The Cards could easily be broadcast on KFYI and simulcast on one of the FMs. KFYI airs mostly paid programming or repeats on Sundays, and it may make sense to simulcast on 95.5.

The same scenario plays out for ASU football and even basketball. The main difference being basketball would blow out whomever KFYI is airing after 7 PM on a weeknight and you probably wouldn't put it on any FM. But college basketball would impact relatively few nights, and you could possibly put games on XTRA except when there's a conflict with the Coyotes.

Now if CC blew up Eva and simulcast KFYI on FM, that would make it more plausible to have the Suns or D-backs since you could more easily put those games on an FM that's already dedicated to a spoken word format. PxP makes good money; better than tape-delayed Glenn Beck, I would suspect.

I'll be happy to get my consulting fee from San Antonio.....

Clear Channel does all-sports, but they seem not to be able to get the format right. Fox Sports Radio is an ever-changing mess (not as bad as Yahoo! was/is). Locally, they only have two daily non-brokered local shows (at least that's more than the one KDUS has).

XTRA probably brings in more revenue than KOY does, despite its lower ratings (it's all about the DEMO$!).

Without Jim Rome, there is little need for XTRA or any other CC-owned sports station to continue. If Dan Patrick bolts for NBC Sports Radio (and KDUS) next year, as rumored a few months ago, there will be no need for them to continue. FSR is a total train-wreck - I'd be surprised if anyone takes that network seriously.
