KDWN lineup -

Kdox has Laura Ingram which beats the "dog crap on the freeway" news format of kdull. Heidi Harris vs. Tammy Bruce...I can see why Limpbaugh does so well.

The "Dog crap on the freeway" line is crap, and needs to go away. KDWN outdid KXNT on the hotel fire. For the first time in decades, LV has an army of professionals doing a professional job with radio news. It seems some people have been so long without it, they've forgotten what it sounds like, or have actually come to think professionally done radio news is a bad thing somehow. As for talent, what a blue collar town like LV needs is somebody who'll shout a lot and tick off the oldsters.

I agree that KDWN has good news coverage. Do you think that KDWN was so bad for so long in the decade or so before they were sold that they are having a difficult time overcoming that baggage?

News-talk always takes time to build. The people who owned all those stations that flipped to Air America, then to something else, didn't seem to realize that. I suspect that KDWN's image, rather than being poor, was nonexistent among people under 55. It's not a matter of rebuilding, it's a matter of building in the money demos. KDWN's old open-line, no screening format was unintentionally entertaining at times, but mainly to radio geeks who couldn't turn their ears away from the train wreck of out-of-touch hosts, out-of-touch callers and dated production values. But I don't think that mattered to most potential listeners, because 720 wasn't a button on their radios in the first place, especially in the years after Limbaugh left (1996).

We will see about this fluke next book. I thought they were 17th? But I know they are not beating the "Mexican" spanish language stations. The talkers 250 rankings will be interesting this year as well. Kdox has Laura Ingram which beats the "dog crap on the freeway" news format of kdull. Ed Schultz on AM 720 9A-NOON would beat Tammy Bruce, and give Mr. Limbaugh a run for his money.

Move Heidi to mornings with Nathan Tannenbaum. That morning news is too repetitious and monotonous. Same stories and reporters over and over and over and over. Traffic every SIX minutes is RIDICULOUS. This isn't L.A., at least not yet.

The KXNT signal is weak in certain areas of Henderson and Boulder City, and this gives KDWN an advantage inside buildings.

Tom, we all know you like Ed Schultz. And maybe he could beat Tammy Bruce, but give Rush a run for his money? Really? Are there any markets where he's beating (or close to beating) Rush right now? I'm not trying to be snarky by asking that question, I really don't know. K-News had Big Ed on for a while, but that didn't go anywhere. I'm willing to give Schultz a pass there because, well, it's K-News.

As far as KDWN, "dog crap on the freeway," and same stories over and over... I don't think you're supposed to listen to the whole four hours of the morning news. They're going for a high cume rating - tune in, get what you need, and tune out. Think KNX in Los Angeles. I don't know if Las Vegas has the population to make that work, but it's short sighted to say "too boring, put Schultz on!" at every opportunity.

If KDWN does want to attract a larger listening base they've got to promote more. They had TV spots when they first flipped, but nothing since then. How about a billboard advertising traffic every six minutes on the freeway? I bet if you asked 100 people on the street what a K-Dawn was, 95 of them wouldn't know. AM radio is weak in this town to begin with, and like others have said, 720 really faded into obscurity during the open lines/illegal immigration/toilet flushing years.

Speaking of Tammy Bruce, when I lived in LA and listened to her weekend show on KFI she was a nutty left-wing weirdo. Now she seems to be a nutty right-wing weirdo. Did she ever come out and say what made her change her tune, or can we assume she wanted to get syndicated so she flip flopped?

This has *NOTHING* to do with ME personally liking Ed. If I post somethings in regards to programming on the forum, it's a suggestion on how to increase ratings ... based on my observations and experience ....

Ed *HAS* beat Hannity in several markets. As for Rush, Ed has been close, like in Seattle, but I don't know if Ed has ever beating Rush ....

That is standard protocol for morning news blocks, but at the very least they need more in depth feature stories.

They're *STILL* in obscurity, with old fashioned, fiscal and social conservatives like Royal Masters, Michael Savage, Jerry Doyle, Neal Boortz, and Heidi Harris. I would like to see their breakdowns, except for Savage, I bet the bulk of the audience is 55+.
