KEGL is stunting

Yeah, but they want to hear new sometimes! So far the newest song The Eagle has played is 19 years old…🙃
True.

When I predicted this thing would sound like WCHI, I put little thought in to it and was just speculating. So far, though, it’s quite similar. iHeart has made an effort with WCHI personality wise but the music has been weak. Hopefully they make a personality effort with Eagle as well.

I disagree strongly insofar as the music is concerned. WCHI plays a ton of 80s butt rock and a decent dose of wimpy 90s alternative.

So far, KEGL reminds me more of KISS in San Antonio.

If they keep the talk shows off and do music, it might work this time. Music sounds pretty good. Don't think it will hurt Lone Star 9.25. Been listening since a little after 10. I questioned I heart using the same branding, but this could work.

I do not see the business strategy in returning to the Eagle, and you're right that rapidly going back and forth is not going to help bring listeners back, but that's not advocating for the listener. That's just media criticism, which is in a nutshell what most of this site is.
That's what gets me, not that this reversion happened but that this is the second time it happened, which only shows (if but unintentionally) indecision and a lack of commitment.

I'm struggling to think of any actual benefit going back to active rock besides it having much, much less overhead than the Freak (especially when it is likely all the personalities will be networked from elsewhere).

How about the fact KVIL is currently #1 or #2 in AQH share in Adults 25 to 54 in the entire market and can be sold in combo with 105.3 The Fan to boot?

KVIL's numbers didn't start rising sharply until Russ Martin passed away and KEGL made a series of ill advised programming decisions.

My guess is iHM was losing out or was fearing of losing out on male focused buys.

97.1 and 92.5 can be paired together for sales purposes, and returning Rock to 97.1 will take a lot of wind out of KVIL's sails (and maybe sales, too!).

There are certainly other compelling paths that could've been taken for 97.1's format choice. Country, Latin CHR and Urban AC are among them. I was thinking Country was more likely than Rock simply because bringing back a brand & format after killing it not just once...but twice...is such a rarity. Plus, I figured Country would pair nicely with all of the other stations in the cluster for sales purposes.

Anyone calling the Eagle “classic rock”, should we call KROQ “classic rock” as well because they play Depeche Mode and Metallica
KROQ's playlist is 40% current/recurrents.

KEGL is playing merely all 20+ year old songs, no currents. In the first two hours, there was one song from post 2010 and it was a local artist, so until we see more of a trend it is very fair to consider KEGL to be Classic Rock.

Isn't KVIL straight-up modern rock? Classic-heavy active rock and modern rock aren't exactly one and the same.

That's the problem. The Eagle brand is burned and spent and failed to naturally evolve like WMMS managed to do in the late 2000s. Can't exactly say it's a wise choice bringing back the same thing that already failed and expecting a different result, because Russ Martin ain't coming back.

Disagree. Classic music formats typically work when programmed correctly. What seems burned and spent to many of us feels familiar and comfortable to FM radio audiences.

It remains to be seen what the mornings and airstaff look like this time around, but The Eagle is still a strong rock radio brand in DFW, and the playlist sounds thoroughly tested and focused.

Very true. KVIL was an imperfect substitute for The Eagle. That's why disenfranchised KEGL listeners who began listening to KVIL by default will likely listen to KVIL considerably less moving forward, in my opinion.

This "isn't the same thing that already failed."

What failed was a mix of crappy talk shows (following Martin's passing) in afternoons, a lot of music preemptions for basketball games, and what appeared to be a less than optimal song playlist.

I thought the Live 105 and 99X brands were both heavily damaged goods and questioned the wisdom of resurrecting each (particularly the former). So far, both are performing very well.

I disagree. This smacks of "much cheaper and budget-friendly than the Freak". A format flip of least resistance.

How is a lineup presumably consisting of nothing but syndicated air talent (given this was almost entirely budget-driven) going to be any better? In order for such a format to work, it needs to be personality-driven. And again, the lack of a Russ Martin-type host in morning drive casts an oversized shadow over the whole thing.

I don't think you could compare either of those two brands to the Eagle. Edge, yes. Eagle? Uh-uh.

this is very opinion based. Again. This board likes to pick and poke at this in order for things to not work

why not? those are literally two examples of rock/alternative brands that are doing well. Both formats came back from the dead and are doing well. Why can‘t people just accept the fact this worked before without talk shows
