KEGL

At least the eagle hasn’t played all American rejects like they used to
What do you mean by that? Can you name specific songs? I've never heard the term "American rejects" applied to radio music programming before.

Now it makes sense. Why is this particular release critical in evaluating KEGL?
IIRC, the Eagle did play their 2008 smash "Gives You Hell" a number of times in the late 10's and early 20's. It never charted on Active Rock but did chart on Alternative. It was absolute gangbusters on Pop and Hot AC radio.

The All-American Rejects have three other hit songs. 2002's "Swing Swing" and 2005/06's "Dirty Little Secret" and "Move Along". They are all charming pop-punkers that served as good gateway songs into the pop-punk and emo scene that was strong at the time. AFAIK, the Eagle has never touched the other three songs, just "Gives You Hell".

I suspect the Eagle played "Gives You Hell" as a way to lure listeners in; and KVIL certainly keeps it as a regular on their gold list currently (KVIL also plays the other three hit TAAR songs, though "Swing Swing" doesn't pop up as frequently as the others).

They just played 30 Seconds To Mars - THE KILL. The song never charted on any format in the U.S. - and topped 35ish in the UK on the alt chart there.

But according to the biga and eduardo, this is perfectly fine as long as other stations nowhere close to Dallas play it.

Lemme break it down again - it didn't work last time, and it ain't gonna work this time if you keep playing that.

Low cume - low tsl = The Freak, and we all saw how that did.

Not one single song from All American Rejects - ever - charted on rock radio in America. They didn't even bother putting up the ROCK chart on my site I use.

Eduardo, no offense, but this is a fundamental issue why you arguing about the music on Eagle doesn't make any sense. Don't get all mad, it's just the truth.

If you're not gonna play big top ten hits from the ROCK format, this isn't going to work. And playing Muse in between a song from 1981 (AC/DC) and a song from 1994 (Bush - Little Things) . . . car crash.

This is why rock radio stations are built around talk instead of music. I call it Goldilocks syndrome. She was the one who complained about the porridge being too hot or too cold. Rock fans complain: The music is too old. The music is too new. These songs are burned to a crisp. These songs never charted. Over and over and over.

Stop looking at individual songs. Look at the bigger picture. They play an unfamiliar song followed by Whole Lotta Love or Californication. They're playing EVERYTHING THAT ROCKS! This isn't Top 40 rock. Stop quoting the charts. There's a base of rock fans who hate popular rock. They want deep cuts. They want oh wow songs. In other words, they want what you say doesn't work.

As I said: FORGET ABOUT THE PAST!!!!!! The old Eagle is dead. Their listeners are gone. This station is starting from scratch. It's playing different songs. But it's also playing some familiar stuff. That's what a format is.

ONCE AGAIN: There is NO radio format that will EVER satisfy everyone 100% of the time.

This is why Alternative is in a better place overall right now. The fanbase is more flexible; a lot of songs from back to the 80’s to fresh artists debuting now are a-ok to play. The bigger problem is nationwide consensus, the format tends to be hyper-localized in terms of playlists these days (if not DJs). Songs that work in the Midwest absolutely do not work on the coasts and vice versa, that type of thing. I think it’s a problem that Active Rock PDs would kill for though.

Except Billie Eilish, she causes polarized reactions from Alt fans that make rock fans’ complaining look like crying over spilled milk. But there’s exceptions to everything.

It seems right now KEGL is trying to dodge part of the issue by hardly playing any currents at all; they have exactly four recurrents on the playlist and nothing that has been released as a single so far this year.

That is surprising to me because I never heard them get airplay on AOR when they broke in 1986/87 nor did they have any rock cred. I only heard them on CHR back then. Now suddenly they are rock artists.

The above is very close to my thought process from several pages back (the post MarkW responded to).

I said the music sounds pretty good, but there are duds here and there and Sabotage was an example.

One man's opinion. I am guessing that Sabotage ranked high in testing (and you know there had to be a music test before relaunching the format), in which case I will see how long it takes David E. to use his favorite "o" word on you.

Kramer worked a number of years in rock radio, including some time at the very station we are discussing. I think he most likely possesses a decent amount of knowledge on the format and the DFW rock audience.

That does not mean he automatically knows better than the music testing. It is not unlikely that the KEGL he worked for would have had different test results. It doesn't take more than a year or two for a target demo's preferences to change.

In terms of programming, I've always said the most recent research gets the most weight in decision making.

Reading the Facebook page when B&S debuted at the remote tells you that no one likes it, and no one is loyal to it - because it doesn't fit.

My turn to say it. Social media is not research.

Years ago, I was trading in my car and was looking for a specific model and color. They had the model, but it was not my choice color. It was the end of the prior model year, so I could not order the color I liked. The sales manager said, "I'm not running a museum here. If you move your color choice, I'll move my price a lot".

Now that was a good sales manager.

You're wrong on so many levels. I'm not arguing with you any more. It's a waste of time. You're flat out wrong.

You can't handle the truth. I've watched iHeart do this in other markets. They did the same thing when they launched WCHI in Chicago. I can see this from a broader perspective.
