Keith Edwards on www.garyinthemorning.com

Man, was checking out his show yesterday (which is a great little internet show.) And heard Keith Edwards on talking about the butcher job he got from Shamrock.. Really sucks, Keith sounds like a great guy, and is a great talent, always found him very entertaining. Sucks for that poor guy the number the Lynetts did to him, but I guess thats how the biz goes. If ya wanna listen to his interview(actually it was a radio themed broadcast, with a girl from Fresh 102.7 (the old WNEW FM) and another female broadcaster, gave alot of insight into the sordid world of Radio.. Best line from the show was his sidekick Dan, when they talked to the former WSBG intern named Ryan, and talking about nude photos, and Dan comes up with a bit about Saving Ryans Privates.. great stuff, this show needs to be syndicated!
But getting back to Keith, man did that poor bastard get screwed by Shamrock.. Well listen to yourself, goto www.garyinthemorning.com, pull up past shows, and grab the 23jul08 show to hear the broadcast. Keep up the great work guys..

Gary's show is top-notch. I listen every day. Wouldn't want to say which shout-boxer I am, but Gary's show beats anything playing on the dial. :D

Gary has a great "little" radio show, this is true. BUT, how great can it be when he has all of what...10 weekly streamers ? Not to mention the fact that Gary is low to no class whatsoever. It is cheap, offensive to women, and very high school sounding. JMO

ABC girl, gotta disagree there. Sure Gary has some jokes that are like mens locker room stuff. (The spotted dick ones are absolutely hilarious IMHO.) But thats what the dial is all about too... Thats why the country is great, freedom of choice. Internet radio can be a little freer because of the lack of FCC regs, so it can also be more offensive to certain groups of people depending on the show. Personally I find him refreshing, and the show moves really quickly and packs alot of punch in the hour, or 2 its on. And btw, Keith Edwards doing the Rob Lipschutz imitation... Spot on. I worked w/ Rob in the Philly area 20 years ago or so, and that impression Keith did, I coulda swore Rob was in the studio there... LMFAO! I think even Rob would have had a laugh about it... Keep up the great work guys..

I agree with abcgirl. Gary was nothing but junior high school humor, and I felt sorry for Keith Edwards. He got screwed at "The Q." Boo Hoo. Welcome to the club. Man up and stop whining about it on the radio (or the internet). Keep your head held high.

Wow Nigel,

You must not work in the industry.. Keith wasn't "whining" about it. He was relating in a very funny way what happened to him. For all the industry types out there, it was a pretty informative look into the maelstron that is Shamrock Communications, and for the regular listener, it was a good funny interview. I feel soory for anyone that loses there job in our crazy industry, and to hear someone talk about it honestly and openly, well thats just pretty damn cool in my book. I've been fired enough times in this biz, as has most folks that work in the industry. So when one of our brethren goes down, its nice to rally around them, instead of telling them so what, you suck...

Pretty harsh man...

Keith is an absolutely great guy, who once again got robbed. He's someone who really deserves much better than he has gotten here in NEPA.

WOW
Nigel Wick---if my mother hadn't been dead for 5 years I would have thought you were her.
Plooker & BrigThomson, thanks for the love. And thanks to Gary and Dan for having me on the show. I've gotten a 90% approval rating from people who heard it. I still have yet to hear from Lippy.
I never really thought I was whining---I thought it was a little justified indignance. Okay, there was some alcohol involved as well.
It never ceases to amaze me that the suits demand you behave with loyalty and professionalism while showing you absolutely NO allegiance whatsoever and, in the end, no dignity or common decency.
They and their minions would have you believe it's part of the business....and surely enough it is.
And---I have a REALLY REALLY REALLY funny story about what happened to Kerry and I after we left the station on the day we got canned. But I'm saving it for later.

Hey Keith,

My comments were no reflection on you whatsoever. You are awesome on-air. My opinion was on Gary and the way he carries himself. You need to let it go and find a better gig, there is always one out there. Gary's show isn't it. Why lower yourself to that ?

Radio business is radio business and it always will be. There is no loyalty when it comes to on-air personalities. They are seat fillers and even those are slowly fading away. But this one thing will never change, life goes on long after the jock is gone and the last f-you is uttered. And the listeners ?, they don't go but so far away from their favorite format and station. Amen and the end.

Hmmm, ABCGirl, would be curious to know what gig you have in the industry, you're extremely judgemental in this post here. Ever do mornings before... I have, and lemme tell you, its tough. Trying to engage the listener and keep things moving, while dancing around that fine line the suits have drawn in the sand (and they refuse to tell you.) Its tough! You're opinion is you're opinion, and I have no prob w/that... morning shows especially tend to garner strong love hate responses.. But I'm just curious if you have ever walked the walk doing mornings...

Keith,
I heard the Gary thing. Whining didn't even occur to me.

And the Lippy was startlingly accurate!

Hang in there. There's always something right around the corner.

PS
Loved your scene in Wingman! LOL!

I have manned weekends, middays, evening drive and YES morning drive(for over 5 years). I have been in this business for more years than I care to mention. I started when I was 12 of course : ) I have worked for a-hole programmers and some very talented ones over my career. Liked some and not so much some of the others. Some liked me and some hated me. So yes I do know how finicky listeners are. I just find Gary's purpose for his show purposeless. And you are right, everyone has an opinion. That is mine.

OK ABCGirl.. just wanted to know, respect to you. You know the challenge, and thats what I was trying to get at. Lotsa folks in our biz thinks that mornings are a piece of cake.. Unless you walk the walk(and you have) you really have no clue how hard it is.. Garys long terms success as a morning guy(18+years) and Keiths many years, adds up to over a quarter century of experience between the 2.. And thats all I was trying to drive home. Not so easy when you get behind that mic in the mornings and try to hold an audience compelled. (In all honesty, I sucked at it, and I'll be the first to admit although I did try) You need a special state of mind to get up at 4am and be spot on an hour or 2 later, its not for me, and not for alot of folks either. SO I tend to give a free pass to folks that have done it succesfully. Wheteher you like their shows or not, longevity is the ultimate answer for success in the majority of cases.... So as a programmer, I respect those guys and what they bring to the table, thats all... But thanks for the honest and open answer, much appreciated ABCgirl... I'll check you out as well if ya wanna give a dial location...

Hey I love the feedback from others on this board. I got smart not too long ago and switched gears in my radio career where I could actually make a good living...sales. : ) I have been there and had super high ratings with my partner and national recognition for what we did. It was an awesome run. But I did learn one thing over the years. We are in a position to use what we do for the betterment of the community and to bring some sunshine into our fans lives. We are part of their daily lives, kinda like family. How we choose to use that power can be funny in a positive way or funny in a crude insulting demeaning way. I know Gary has the talent, he just chooses to shake things up with vulgar bits that don't make me feel good when I hear it. If he actually feels good when he finishes up his show everyday then he has a much bigger problem that sticking his foot in his mouth. Jocks today who are lucky to have a live airshift should really think about that. Shaking things up a little is fine, shaking people down, putting them down is not classy. Again, JMO. ;D

That's what Kerry and I tried to do
I think we made an impression, unfortunately the die was cast and we were set up from the start.
STUPID US---WE TRIED TO DO A REAL MORNING SHOW!!!!!
We got no recognition other than what we got from the listeners. BUT I have to say the phone action doubled after she joined me on the air. I think if the HEADS would have been a bit more patient they would have gotten the numbers they wanted---but they shot their wad on Chris Barnes and he didn't deliver.
So it goes.

My guess is that there's a delicate balance to be struck in doing insult/shock radio, and not everyone has the skill to strike the balance. Once it becomes obvious that you'll do anything just to nail someone, my belief is that you've lost most of your audience, they see right through your act, they make you for a phony. There is a definite skill, craft, and art in skewering people without coming off as a nasty and short-talented hump.

Many won't like me much for saying this, but jumping from programming to sales pretty much means you left radio. Radio isn't sales. If you want to sell, wonderful, but I never thought sales reps were broadcasters, even in the loosest sense of the word. The ability to sell is a marvelous skill, one which not all of us possess. I'm among those who've not been blessed with the skill, at least not in the "...knock on doors, sit down and BS, and then close," or make the "ask" as some call it.

There's an old saying, "If you can sell, you'll never starve." While I buy into that completely, selling radio isn't working in radio, not anymore than selling in TV means you work in TV.

As to Keith and Kerry; nice people. One question, though; how did Kerry Kearns morph into Kerry Kane and end up doing morning radio? Not being at all facetious, I'm just curious.

One small point to add. No Programming=No Sales. No Sales=No Programming. They have to operate together. So someone going over to sales, is not leaving radio. They both need each other. If you have no money for salaries or promotions or simple office supplies nothing else matters.

Let me fill ya in. I worked on a movie with Kerry back when she was a news producer on WBRE. When you're working in an ensemble cast you form a cameraderie with the other actors and she and I struck up a friendship. As some of you may know, she took a job with WBAL in Baltimore that didn't work out. She contacted me back around Christmas asking what kind of work was available up here because she had no prospects down south. She had some radio experience from when she attended Mansfield, and took the gig...but it was supposed to be afternoons. She filled in for me on mornings while I was attending a wedding in Vegas---but the week before I left she hung out with me on the morning show so I could show her the ropes and she ended up becoming a part of the show. We had a lot of fun while it lasted. We never really tried to do shock---just silly irreverent stuff.

Oh masterg, don't be a silly nilly. This is no place to get into a wizzing match over what is in radio and what is not. All of it is radio. The age old who makes the station #1 ? will still be argued long after we all are gone. When I was on-air, I would think to myself, "Screw salespeople and all their demands, if it was not for me you would not have a job!" Then when I walked over to the dark side (just kidding) sales, it became, " Look Jock Drama Queen/King, if it were not for me you would not have a job so grow up, suck it up , get your talent fee and deal !" Funny how it changes. In all reality, none of us would have a job without the listeners who are passionate about their music and their fav station. As stated above, we all need each other, now more than ever. If the listeners were not listening and going out and spending their hard earned $$$ at the clients who advertise on our stations, then we would all be screwed. Radio is still one of the top medias out there. It does get results. Whatever role each of us plays in that is a valueable one. Have a great weekend !
