Keith Edwards on www.garyinthemorning.com

The best GM I ever worked for was a guy named Dave Stilli who said pretty much the same thing. In fact he was able to get people who normally couldn't be in the same room with each other work together nicely using that principle. I could never understand the schisms that formed between the sales and programming staffs....We're all in this together.

Now Times-Shamrock Is Advertising For A New Afternoon Drive Jock For Rock 107, And They Just Let Keith

Go From The Other Gig.

Go Figure...

Oh masterg, don't be a silly nilly.

OK, maybe I was a bit strident in my remarks. Let me try again...

From my perspective of over thirty years in broadcasting, all of it on-air, I never really met a sales rep who was driven to seek a job in the industry by a passion for the biz. By contrast, on-air types all had the passion.

Plenty of sales reps fell into broadcasting because it was the only job open when they were looking, or they saw the potential for making some serious money. Surely in many cases it was a combination of the two.

Looking at all the programming types I knew over the years, not one simply stumbled into the business while looking for a job, any job. Instead, getting into the biz was a lifelong dream. I really doubt selling time was ever a lifelong dream of anyone's. I can also say with certainty that money was never a motivator, we all knew money was over all weak.

The big mystery as of right now is just what is the future of terrestrial radio. My very strong sense is that what exists today won't exist ten years from now. This could be end of days for radio, at least the radio we knew and loved for so long.

Did you really call me, or anyone, a silly nilly? It has such a lovely Mr. Rogers' feel to it.

I call alot of people silly nillies, especially when big bad board moderators are on the loose.

In response, I totally get what you mean about the on-air people having the passion for the business. Remember from my earlier post, it is where I started. And I will add I think that helps me in what I do now. I feel just as passionate about my stations as I did about the one I was on for years. Taking that strong conviction into the medium as a whole and instilling that in clients and then seeing them grow out of that... It is as exciting for me as the old days were when we had a bit that was talked about for days. It is just different, but in some ways the same.

Love what you do and be in it for the the love of it, whether that is behind a mic or finding a way to make our advertisers successful, there is a great joy in it. Isn't that what it should really be about anyway ?

I have to go now, I need to go feed the fish, hang up my wool cardigan, and change Keds before another long week in the neighborhood !

I had my chance to work for the Lynetts, and I turned it down. Bill Lynett is like the George Steinbrenner of radio, good intentions, but pyscopathic behavior.. I understand what Keeth had to deal with, when I did my interview w/ Bill he said a few things(which I won't mention here) that put the red flags up... Very difficult place to work at, so what happened to Keith Edwards, and a lot of other good folks that passed thru the doors on Penn Ave. Its understandable why the retiscence of some quality jocks to work there. Bill Lynett needs to let go, and let the good folks that hes hired(Jim Loftus for example) Handle the personnel and just trust his judgement hires of upper personnel. Until he does that, Rock 107 will be a place of bad morale, and inconsistency. Hes gotta let go to get the results he's desired. Its like when King George brought Cashman on to run the Yankees, develop thetalent at low cost, and just sit back and wait a few years to get quality staff. My advice is Chill Bill, and let your staff handle things, it will all work out fine!

Taken From The Book " WHOopla: The Greatest Rock Radio Stunt Ever". By V. Scott Beddome.

About A Stunt Pulled Off By One Of The Q-FM Jocks Trying To Get THE WHO To Play In Milwaukee, WI.

When Times-Shamrock Had The Call Letters WQFM On A Classic Rock Station.

Shamrock Communications, QFM’s owners, had a well known reputation for being wickedly cheap. In that they were primarily a newspaper publisher, QFM was considered a play toy for black sheep family member/owner Bill Lynett. Given his antics when he would leave his Scranton, Pennsylvania hometown and come to Milwaukee, the applicable toy would be a catnip filled mouse. Stories abound of his after hours bar fun. He liked booze and women. If the idea was that the 93.3 Milwaukee frequency was something for him to do that would keep out of trouble, it was severely lacking. Lynett is a good ol’ boy corporate brat who had no problem letting it all out. To co-op a popular phrase, the 93QFM barrel “rocked” from the top down.

Lynett’s poor management is legendary. He vacillated from micro management to disinterest. My impression has him basically never really taking the radio station too seriously. His actions in regards to his employees reflected that. Turnover was tremendous. Milwaukee’s 93.3 frequency is the Kevin Bacon of broadcast radio with six degrees of separation between it and EVERYBODY who has EVER worked in radio. Those who worked there learned that the best thing to do was to hang around the middle because too low meant cleaning house due to low profits and too high meant cleaning house to greedily grab the new cash and lower the payroll. These were swinging saloon doors, not the slow and cumbersome revolving type.

Sound Familiar?

Dave....

Wow!! That does sound familiar... Man you nailed that one... Great source material. Its amazing that the cluster is still even in business.
Great post tho, thanks!

On a side note, listening to Garys show today, heard he got a song parody on the Stern show yesterday.. Played a couple of times too.
Funny stuff! He continues to think outside the box in his effort at brand building. Very clever move. His shows seem to get tighter too. Seems like hes getting into a groove. An enjoyable listen everyday. You can catch the repeat of the show here

www.garyinthemorning.com

That howard clip with garys song plays all day.
I think his next move should be trying to syndicate to terrestrial, but thats my own opinion. He would definitely be a good fit at a lot of places.
