Having "retired" from "retail radio" I can write, speak, and yes...think a bit more objectively than I could in 2000 or 2001.
Ken Charles and his ilk are manifestations and symptoms of a much larger disease.
Radio was never a noble profession, but once upon a time it was fun. It was creative, and it was entertaining. Radio is no longer any of those things - not for the employees, and certainly not for the listeners. I call it "The Wal-Mart Syndrome" - package it up as cheaply as possible and sell it in bulk.
The whole "cluster" concept may be great if you are selling cat litter and feminine hygiene products, but when applied to today's radio the term "cluster" seems to be missing a suffix that starts with the letter "F."
And what about the employees of a company that owns 8,627 radio stations? Back at the enormous 1230, Chuck Tiller and I were regularly chafed and/or chapped at something the late Dave Morris had done or said, but at least we knew who to be chafed and/or chapped with. With Clear Channel, and other mega-operators it is not unlike the James Coburn movie "The President's Analyst" where we found that the bad guy was the Phone Company.
So it ain't my problem anymore. At Bill Young Productions I do essentially the same job I did working for radio stations, but for more money, more security, more benefits, better gear...and NO weekends or holidays! ;D
